In this paper, we present a systematic framework for recognizing human actions without relying on impractical assumptions, such as processing of an entire video or requiring a large look-ahead of frames to label an incoming video. As a secondary goal, we examine incremental learning as an overlooked obstruction to the implementation of reliable real-time recognition. Assuming weak appearance constancy, the shape of an actor is approximated by adaptively changing intensity histograms to extract pyramid histograms of oriented gradient features. As action progresses, the shape update is carried out by adjustment of a few blocks within a tracking window to closely track evolving contours. The nonlinear dynamics of an action are learned using a recursive analytic approach, which transforms training into a simple linear representation. Such a learning strategy has two advantages: 1) minimized error rates, and significant savings in computational time;and 2) elimination of the widely accepted limitations of batch-mode training for action recognition. The effectiveness of our proposed framework is corroborated by experimental validation against the state of the art.

snippets are used by almost every text search engine to complement the ranking scheme in order to effectively handle user searches, which are inherently ambiguous and whose relevance semantics are difficult to assess. Despite the fact that XML is a standard representation format of Web data, research on generating result snippets for XML search remains limited. To tackle this important yet open problem, in this article, we present a system eXtract which generates snippets for XML search results. We identify that a good XML result snippet should be a meaningful information unit of a small size that effectively summarizes this query result and differentiates it from others, according to which users can quickly assess the relevance of the query result. We have designed and implemented a novel algorithm to satisfy these requirements. Furthermore, we propose to cluster the query results based on their snippets. Since XML result clustering can only be done at query time, snippet-based clustering significantly improves the efficiency while compromising little clustering accuracy. We verified the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach through experiments.

Owing to the recent development of handwriting input devices such as tablets and digital pens, digital notebooks have become an alternative to traditional paper-based notebooks. Digital notebooks are available for various device types. To display a list of text documents on a device screen, we often use scaled thumbnails or text snippets summarized through natural language processing or structural analyses. However, these are ineffective in conveying summaries of handwritten documents, because informal and unstructured handwritten data are difficult to summarize using traditional methods. We therefore propose the use of emphasis-based snippets, i.e., summarized handwritten documents based on natural emphasis annotations, such as underlines and enclosures. Our proposed method places emphasized words into thumbnails or text snippets. User studies showed that the proposed method is effective for keyword-based navigation.

We enhance an existing search engine's snippet (i.e. excerpt from a web page determined at query-time in order to efficiently express how the web page may be relevant to the query) with linked data (LD) in order to highlight non trivial relationships between the information need of the user and LD resources related to the result page. To do this, we introduce a multi-step unsupervised co-clustering algorithm so as to use the textual data associated with the resources for discovering additional relationships. Next, we use a 3-way tensor to mix these new relationships with the ones available from the LD graph. Then, we apply a first PARAFAC tensor decomposition [5] in order to (i) select the most promising nodes for a 1-hop extension, and (ii) build the enhanced snippet. A video demonstration is available online (http://***/drim/projects/ensen/).

In an ever-growing world with various manufactures and industries increasingly striv- ing to expand and becoming more high-tech and advance, it's of great importance to have intelligent and inexpensive tools for decision-making. A powerful tool such as a discrete event simulation (DES) offer the ability to perform analyses and experi- ments virtually, avoiding potential damages and cost to the real physical world. The simulation team at AF are looking for ways to improve their way of dealing with DES projects; mainly developed in AutoMod. With the increasing demand of discrete event simulations as well as with businesses continuously changing, it's becoming a great challenging to maintain a model, from a long-term perspective. Problems such as making it time-efficient and easy to resume previous models in case of a future project inheritance or enabling concurrent collaboration among other team members are essentials topics that are now receiving more importance. The thesis has com- bined previous experience in developing in AutoMod with a case study, literature studies and interviewing session with the simulation team at AF. The case study involves an old simulation model developed in AutoMod with a history of multiple authors, making it hard to break down and update. The results are a variety of tools designed to be applicable to both previous models as well as new incoming projects. Key tools developed are the wide range of snippets, customized workflow using Git, and the incorporated well-defined documentation. Using a version con- trol system, Git, has proved useful when trying to manage implementation of new model-features, review changelog, keeping track of bugs and the overall documen- tation. snippets have showed tremendous advantages when trying to eliminate the software related challenges such as inconsistency in writing and reviewing source code.

The motivation of this study is to enhance general topical search with a sentiment-based one where the search results (snippets) returned by the web search engine are clustered by sentiment categories. Firstly we developed an automatic method to identify product review documents using the snippets (summary information that includes the URL, title, and summary text), which is genre classification. Then the identified snippets were automatically classified into positive (recommended) and negative (non-recommended) documents, which is sentiment classification. Thereafter the user may directly decide to access the positive or negative review documents. In this study we used only the snippets rather than their original full-text documents, and applied a common machine learning technique, SVM (support vector machine), and heuristic approaches to investigate how effectively the snippets can be used for genre and sentiment classification. The results show that the web search engine should improve the quality of the snippets especially for opinionated documents (i.e. review documents).
