This study proposes a two-dimensional (2D) detection method using partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) for bit-patterned media (BPM) storage. Because the readback signals are deteriorated by 2D channel effect, that is, intersymbol interference along the track direction and intertrack interference across the track direction, it is necessary to use "2D" PRML in order to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance. The 2D PRML in the proposed method is based on the 2D soft output viterbi algorithm (SOVA), which is composed of two one-dimensional SOVAs. In addition, we propose a 2D SOVA for a 2D partial response (PR) target using dual equalizers: one estimates the correlated signal (output data of the PR target), used as the main information with encoding rule, and the other estimates the binary signal (binary data recorded on BPM), used as extrinsic information on the other direction's neighboring bits. The simulation results show that the proposed method improves the BER performance at a low computational complexity.

We introduce an iterative two-dimensional (2-D) soft output viterbi algorithm (SOVA) for patterned media storage. Patterned media storage has enormous 2-D intersymbol interference (ISI), which includes ISI from neighboring symbols and intertrack interference (ITI) from adjacent tracks, since there is a small space between adjacent tracks and neighboring symbols. Thus, conventional one-dimensional (1-D) detection schemes have difficulty overcoming the 2-D ISI problem. To combat 2-D ISI, it is natural to consider a 2-D detection scheme. Since the complexity of pure 2-D viterbi detection is quite high, we propose a 2-D SOVA using two 1-D SOVAs. We also propose an iterative scheme between two 1-D SOVAs to achieve its best performance without error correcting codes.

In recent years, detecting text in natural is an emerging problem and gained increasing attention from the computer vision community. Detecting text in natural scene text image is an important step for number of applications such as computerized aid for visually impaired, automatic sign reading, language translation and navigation. Natural scene text image may contain complex background and increased the challenges for the research community in detection and recognition. The novel scene text recognition method uses Part-based tree-structure model to improve the performance of the system by modeling each category of character to detect and recognize simultaneously. For word recognition, soft output viterbi algorithm was used to improve the measure of reliability in hard bit decision of the viterbi algorithm. It maximizes the character sequence posterior probability using Bayesian decision view and n-gram model. To evaluate the performance of the system Char74k dataset was used for character detection and two more datasets ICDAR2003 and SVT was used for word recognition.

Extending the Routes of the soft Information in Turbo Equalization for Bit-Patterned Media Recording

This paper presents a new framework of turbo equalization (TE) to overcome 2-D intersymbol interference (2-D ISI) for bit-patterned media recording (BPMR). The BPMR has been developed for the next generation of hard disk drives aiming to extend storage density. One of the main challenges for the system is 2-D ISI, i.e., 1-D ISI from neighbor bits and intertrack interference from adjacent tracks. The conventional TE is the iterative process between an equalizer (or detector) and a decoder. We construct a new scheme of TE where the soft information from the decoder is fed back not only to the equalizer but, at the same time, also to the detector. The proposed scheme is to exploit full advantage of a priori information from the decoder. The results show that the proposed model is approximately 0.4 dB better than the conventional TE solution at 0% track misregistration.

Scheme for Utilizing the soft Feedback Information in Bit-Patterned Media Recording Systems

This paper presents a scheme that utilizes soft feedback information obtained from a decoder to eliminate detrimental interference in bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) systems. BPMR is a promising technology that can increase the storage area density of magnetic storage systems, but one of the main challenges is to overcome 2-D spatial interference. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with that of a conventional iterative detection scheme, and the results indicate that the proposed model is better by approximately 1 dB at 20% track misregistration. In particular, the performance of the system is quite superior, allowing the design of systems with higher area densities.

Turbo equalisation of time varying multipath channel under class-A impulsive noise

The paper explores the problem of turbo equalisation and channel estimation under class-A impulsive noise. The channel is a frequency selective fading channel in which its time varying coefficients are expanded into a finite number of basis sequences and time invariant (TI) expansion parameters. Instead of the application of a maximum likelihood (ML) approach in its standard form, the proposed channel estimator is performed by an iterative approach based on the expectation maximisation (EM) algorithm and the steepest descent algorithm. The proposed estimator reduces the complexity of computations resulting from direct application of the ML approach and provides significant performance gain over the algorithms which are efficient in white Gaussian noise. Also, the proposed estimator is suitable for class-A impulsive noise and utilises the soft information obtained from the soft output viterbi algorithm (SOVA) which is derived under class-A impulsive noise.

Repeated joint source-channel decoding with reduced new bit errors

In this study, we describe a repeated joint source-channel decoding scheme in which not only a priori information about the bit to be decoded but also its decoding reliability information are used to adaptively control the decoding process. The channel decoding reliability information obtained for instance from a previous decoding attempt is used to properly weight the a priori information so that the new bit errors caused by wrong "natural" a priori information are reduced. In order to efficiently estimate the a priori residual redundancy, an iterative approach based on the Kalman filter theory is employed. As a result, decoding gains can be obtained with almost no new bit errors introduced. The proposed scheme is successfully applied to the GSM full rate system to achieve a more reliable transmission of speech signals in both noisy and less noisy environments. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Evaluation of block turbo code performance with the reduced search trellis decoding method

Iterative decoding of parallel concatenated codes, also known as turbo codes, can provide tremendous coding gain approximating to the Shannon limit. Application of turbo coding techniques to block codes gives many advantages, due to the finite code length of the constituent codes and their ease of modification. The authors investigate the application of the trellis decoding method to block turbo codes, since one of the most easy and efficient ways of providing soft output at the decoder is incorporation of the trellis decoding method. The soft output viterbi algorithm is mainly considered, with performance improvement techniques. The authors propose efficient reduced search algorithms in which the decoder complexity can be reduced about ten times with less than 0.1dB degradation in coding gain.

Twin Iterative Detection for Bit-Patterned Media Recording Systems

Bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) has been developed into a technology for the next generation of hard disc drives, which can push area density beyond 1 Tb/in(2) for satisfying the ever increasing demand of storing massive amounts of data. One of the major challenges in BPMR systems is 2-D interference that is regarded as a gist of degrading the system performance. From a signal processing viewpoint, 2-D optimal detection schemes are very complicated for 2-D interference channels. In this paper, we propose a twin iterative detection scheme based on 1-D detectors and decoders in order to reduce the complexity. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared to that of a conventional simplified 2-D iterative detection scheme, and the results indicate that the proposed model is better by approximately 1 dB under the effect of 10% track misregistration.
