Space shift keying (SSK) modulation is a special case of conventional spatial modulation (SM), where the amplitude and/or phase modulation symbols are eliminated from the transmission process so as to reduce complexity. However, high spectral efficiencies are difficult to achieve with SSK. At the same time, the spectral efficiency of SM can be further improved. On this note, to further enhance the spectral efficiencies of both SM and SSK, quadrature SM (QSM) and Bi-SSK modulations, respectively, were proposed. In coded channels, typically soft-output detection coupled with soft-input channel decoding yields significant signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain. Hence, in this paper, we propose soft-output maximum-likelihood detectors (SOMLD) for SSK, Bi-SSK and QSM modulated systems. Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate that the error performances of the proposed SOMLD schemes closely match with that of their hard-decision maximum-likelihood detector counterparts in uncoded channels;while, significant SNR gains are yielded in coded channels.

A special case of conventional spatial modulation (SM) is demonstrated in space shift keying (SSK) modulation, where the amplitude and/or phase modulation symbols are eliminated from the transmission process so as to reduce system complexity. However, the spectral efficiencies of both schemes increase only logarithmically. Hence, large antenna arrays are required to achieve high spectral efficiencies. To reduce the transceiver overhead, while achieving improved spectral efficiencies in both SM and SSK, generalised SM (GSM) and generalised SSK (GSSK), respectively, were proposed. Typically, in coded channels, soft-output detection coupled with soft-input channel decoding yields significant signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain. Hence, in this paper, we propose soft-output maximum-likelihood (ML) detectors (SOMLDs) for the GSM and GSSK schemes, with an aim to further improve the error performance of the systems. Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate that the error performance of the proposed SOMLD schemes closely match with that of their hard-decision ML detector counterparts in uncoded channels;while significant SNR gains are yielded in coded channels.

Iterative Frequency-Domain Joint Channel Estimation and Data detection of Faster-Than-Nyquist Signaling

In this paper, we propose semi-blind iterative frequency domain joint channel estimation (CE) and data detection (DD) of faster-than-Nyquist signaling (FTNS). The proposed scheme achieves low-complexity operation, while maintaining a performance close to that of the perfect channel state information scenario. More specifically, we derive low-complexity frequency-domain CE for the faster-than-Nyquist pilot (FTNP) transmission scenario, where the symbol duration of a pilot block is lower than the Nyquist-criterion-based pilot transmission. Moreover, we propose a serially concatenated channel-encoded FTNS transceiver that takes into account FTNS-specific colored noise effects. The proposed low-complexity receiver carries out soft-decision frequency-domain equalization with the aid of the minimum-mean square error criterion while whitening the colored noise. As explicit benefits of the proposed frequency-domain CE for the FTNP, the demodulated FTNS data block can also be used as a long pilot block, so the iterative joint CE and DD becomes realistic. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed two-stage-concatenated FTNS system relying on binary phase-shift keying-based FTNP and FTNS-data symbols achieves a better error-ratio performance than previous systems that do not consider colored noise effects in the high-symbol-packing FTNS regime.

A reduced-complexity three-stage-concatenated faster-than-Nyquist signaling (FTNS)-based transceiver architecture is proposed, which operates with the aid of soft decision (SoD) frequency-domain equalization (FDE) at the receiver. More specifically, the decoding algorithm conceived allows us to attain near-capacity performance as an explicit benefit of iterative detection, which is capable of eliminating the intersymbol interference imposed by FTNS. The proposed SoD FDE-aided FTNS detector has low decoding complexity that linearly increases upon increasing the FTNS block length and, hence, is particularly beneficial for practical long-dispersion scenarios. Furthermore, extrinsic information transfer charts are utilized for designing a near-capacity three-stage-concatenated turbo FTNS system, which exhibits an explicit turbo cliff in the low-signal-to-noise-ratio region, hence outperforming its conventional two-stage-concatenated FTNS counterpart.

In this paper, we propose a serially concatenated turbo-encoded faster-than-Nyquist signaling (FTNS) transceiver that takes into account FTNS-specific colored noise effects. The proposed low-complexity receiver carries out soft-decision frequency-domain equalization with the aid of the minimum-mean square error criterion while whitening the colored noise. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed multi-stage-concatenated FTNS system achieves a better error-ratio performance than previous systems that do not consider colored noise effects in the high-symbol-packing FTNS regime. Furthermore, as an explicit benefit of the proposed iterative decoder, near-capacity performance is achieved with practical decoding complexity.

Complexity Adjusted soft-output Sphere Decoding by Adaptive LLR Clipping

A-posteriori probability (APP) receivers operating over multiple-input, multiple-output channels provide enhanced bit error rate (BER) performance at the cost of increased complexity. However, employing full APP processing over favorable transmission environments, where less efficient approaches may already provide the required performance at a reduced complexity, results in unnecessary processing. For slowly varying channel statistics substantial complexity savings can be achieved by simple adaptive schemes. Such schemes track the BER performance and adjust the complexity of the soft output sphere decoder by adaptively setting the related log-likelihood ratio (LLR) clipping value.

Improved spatial-temporal equalization for EDGE: A fast selective-direction MMSE timing recovery algorithm and two-stage soft-output equalizer

The radio interface EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) is currently being standardized as an evolutionary path from GSM and TDMA-IS136 for third-generation high-speed data wireless systems. For the EDGE system with multiple antennas, spatial-temporal equalization (STE) can reduce intersymbol interference and co-channel interference, thereby increasing the capacity and range. In this paper, we propose two new techniques to improve the performance of a previously proposed STE: a fast timing recovery algorithm for a selective time-reversal equalizer and a two-stage soft-output equalizer. The new timing recovery algorithm determines the estimated burst timing and processing direction by computing the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) for decision feedback equalizers in both the forward and reverse time directions. The two-stage soft-output equalizer is the cascade of a delayed decision-feedback sequence estimator (DDFSE) and maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) estimator. The DDFSE provides better noise variance estimation and channel truncation for the following MAP. The performance of the new STE is evaluated for the EDGE. At 10% block error rate, the two-branch receiver requires a 3-7-dB lower signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) than the previous approach. Compared with the one-branch receiver, the two-branch receiver requires a 4-dB lower SNR with noise only, and a 10-27-dB lower SIR with a single interferer.

In the uplink massive MIMO systems, linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance in combination with a soft iterative decoder, but suffers from high computational complexity due to the complicated matrix inversion. To approximate the performance of the classical MMSE detection algorithm, a number of iterative methods were proposed with reduced complexity by eliminating the matrix inversion. However, in order to apply these methods to coded systems with soft iterative decoders the post-equalization signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (PE-SINR) should be calculated in each layer to produce soft output values. In this paper, we propose to approximate the PE-SINR in each layer with a universal value calculated at the base station (BS), and apply symbol mapping techniques to the estimation of soft output in each layer to further reduce the computational complexity. The simulation results demonstrate that the detection algorithm with the proposed PE-SINR calculation approach achieves approximating performance to the conventional methods.
