Sentinel-2 images are widely used for coastline extraction. One of the most widespread methods is the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), which permits distinguishing between water and non-water pixels. The result obtained, since it derives from satellite images, preserves the shape of the pixels, which is often labeled as unrealistic. For this reason, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools are often used in the literature to simplify and/or smooth the coastline obtained from satellite images in order to make it as similar to reality as possible. However, these operations are not always optimal. In this work, we analyze the coastline extracted from Sentinel-2 images concerning the island of Giglio (Italy), in particular four coastlines are compared: the standard coastline, i.e. the one obtained directly from the NDWI; the coastline resulting from the smoothing application; the coastline resulting from the simplification application; and finally, the coastline resulting from both simplification and smoothing application. The results show a higher efficiency of smoothing compared to simplification.

This study aims to develop methodologies for joint test requirement analysis and design to enhance the integrated capabilities of the Joint Test Support Platform. The findings conclude that developing standardized methods for describing operational requirements and establishing effective transitions from operational to test requirements are crucial to improving the quality of test designs. Additionally, the successful creation and testing of a joint test requirement analysis and design software suite were significant achievements. These contributions address critical challenges in the field by resolving ambiguities in operational requirement descriptions, establishing effective mapping methods for initial test system plans, and validating these methodologies through the comprehensive "Maritime Interception Defense Combat Test" case study. Overall, this research significantly enhances the clarity, accuracy, and efficiency of test requirement analysis and design, providing a robust framework for future applications.

The torque between an input and an output shaft can be transferred by magnetic gears without the need for physical contact. In certain instances, the design specifications of the entire system dictate that magnetic gears have an integer gear ratio. This leads to a higher cogging torque in the high-speed rotor (internal rotor), which results in vibration and acoustic noise. Creating an uneven air gap and skewing one of the three coaxial magnetic gear rotors are common ways to lower cogging torque. In this paper, in order to significantly reduce the cogging torque with an integer gear ratio, a coaxial magnetic gear with a skewed modulator is proposed. In addition, the proposed structure uses an internal rotor with a non-circular surface to create an unequal air gap. The proposed structure is optimized by a genetic optimization algorithm and Maxwell finite element software to simultaneously minimize the cogging torque and maximize the torque density. The results of comparing the proposed structure with the conventional spoke-type structure show a reduction of 88.3% and 5% in terms of the cogging torque and core losses, respectively.

Technical Debt (TD) refers to the long-term costs of suboptimal choices made for short-term gains. Algorithm Debt (AD), a type of TD, refers to the sub-optimal implementation of an algorithm, which can negatively impact software systems as they evolve. Machine and Deep Learning (ML/DL) systems are prone to AD due to the complexity of the methods and data dependencies. AD in ML/DL systems leads to model degradation and poor scalability over time. However, there are no automated tools for its identification and the causes, effects, and mitigation strategies remain largely unknown, creating a knowledge gap. To address this gap, the aim of this research is to investigate the causes, effects, and mitigation strategies of AD in ML/DL systems. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted a review of 35 primary studies. We also performed experiments with ML/DL models for AD identification, and conducted interviews with 21 practitioners, complimented by an ongoing online questionnaire. Preliminary Findings suggest that the causes of AD can be grouped into issues related to data quality, ML knowledge gaps, and challenges in model training. From the experiments, the approach of the training a Logistic Regression model with AD custom features achieved the highest F1 score of 54%, outper-forming other techniques. This study contributes to software engineering by proposing a framework that highlights the causes, effects, and mitigation strategies for AD in ML/DL systems. The framework serves as a guideline for practitioners and offers insights for developing automated tools and effective management strategies for AD in ML/DL systems.

This paper presents extensions to the OpenTitan hardware root of trust that aim at enabling high-performance lattice-based cryptography. We start by carefully optimizing ML-KEM and ML-DSA-the two algorithms primarily rec-ommended and standardized by NIST-in software targeting the OpenTitan Big Number (OTBN) accelerator. Based on profiling results of these implementations, we propose tightly integrated extensions to OTBN, specifically an interface from OTBN to OpenTitan's Keccak accelerator (KMAC core) and extensions to the OTBN ISA to support operations on 2S6-bit vectors. We implement these extensions in hardware and show that we achieve a speedup by a factor between 6 and 9 for different operations and parameter sets of ML-KEM and ML-DSA compared to our baseline implementation on unmodified OTBN. This speedup is achieved with an increase in cell count of less than 17% in OTBN, which corresponds to an increase of less than 3 % for the full Earl Grey OpenTitan core.

HPG is a portable library for gridding and degridding non-uniformly distributed visibility data for synthetic aperture imaging. The library is designed for performance portability, and is implemented using the Kokkos C++ Performance Portability Ecosystem, a High Performance software Foundation project that was initially developed under the US Department of Energy's Exascale Computing Project. The HPG implementation uses portable C++, which compiles to optimized code on CPUs as well as GPUs. The library implements general purpose algorithms that can be used with any user-defined convolution kernels, and is thus applicable to most visibility-based gridding algorithms. It is currently being used by groups within the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in the implementation of A-projection, W-projection, AW-projection, full polarization, spectral line, continuum, and mosaic imaging. Performance testing at NRAO has demonstrated a speedup of up to 160x on GPUs versus CASA-based gridding on a single CPU core. Although the algorithms are inherently optimized for GPU execution, the code can be compiled, unchanged, for OpenMP or even serial CPU execution, which provides a significant benefit for code development and debugging. Hooks provided by Kokkos also support fine-grained performance profiling on all architectures, promoting ease of use during performance optimization. The library is currently undergoing an update to merge a variant that was implemented for the DSA-2000 radio camera imaging pipeline software. Early tests of the merged code promise an approximate 2x speedup versus the current version of HPG on a wide range of GPUs. This performance improvement is achieved through various algorithm refinements, including an option to use mixed precision arithmetic, which is targeted to more affordable GPUs having low double precision floating point performance. Refactoring a large and complex class can be challenging, not only because the class aggregates many different responsibilities but also because of its potentially extensive impact on external classes. Although many extract class methods have been proposed, few support a holistic decomposition that can uncover multiple distinct responsibilities within a complex class, along with their system-wide impacts. Recent research highlights the need for such a holistic view before an organization can commit to redesigning and refactoring. To identify distinct responsibilities while minimizing internal and external impacts, we created Deicide, a new decomposition algorithm that uses an internal call graph, external usage patterns, and semantic similarity of identifiers to calculate a hierarchical set of cohesive clusters, each forming a responsibility module. We evaluated Deicide against three state-of-the-art extract class recommenders using 123 large, change-prone classes from 9 open-source projects. Our results show that the entities within the clusters identified by Deicide are more likely to be changed together and changed by the same group of developers, indicating de facto cohesive responsibilities. The implication is that refactoring based on Deicide’s recommendations would have minimal impact on the system, and these newly extracted classes would be able to evolve independently.

Biomedical research has been altered by the digitization of experimental setups, such as the organ bath and kymograph, by overcoming the drawbacks of conventional approaches. Potential inaccuracies and limitations in data collecting and analysis have been caused by manual measurements and subjective interpretations. The goal of this experiment is to create a dependable, user-friendly digital system that combines an accelerometer, an organ bath, and a kymograph. Real-time data capture, automatic recording, and enhanced visualization capabilities can all be accomplished by observing and analyzing mechanical movements. Accelerometer integration automates data collection, improving accuracy and productivity. Digitization has made it possible to use sophisticated visualization techniques that provide accurate and thorough depictions of physiological changes. algorithms and software technologies allow for deeper insights into underlying processes. The precision, effectiveness, and dependability of physiological research have all significantly improved with the integration of accelerometers into experimental setups. For continued development and use of digitized systems, however, issues with accelerometer measurements, setup integration, and protocol standardization must be resolved.

This work proposes routeNow, a routing algorithm designed for wireless software Defined Internet of Things by dynamic path relaxation based on real-time heuristic that always gives the best least hop path. This is aimed towards providing an alternative backup network for a smart hospital that functions independently on the failure of the primary hospital network. Given a pair of source and destination nodes, a central controller with a global network view first calculates a minimum hop path greedily by minimizing the remaining distance to destination. Hence, the path so found is relaxed dynamically by substituting certain links with other links keeping the hop count constant if a new path is found with a lesser latency than the previous one. For this, the controller maintains a matrix containing real-time delay between neighboring IoT nodes given the current network state and whose values are periodically refreshed using a heuristic function based on actual delay measurements. This enables the controller to dynamically modify routing paths. Simulation analysis of routeNow shows that it formulates routing paths with significant less time even with large networks and by always maintaining a route with least hops, on average a least latency path is also ensured.

This article discusses the problem of placing administrative nodes in networks based on the SpaceFibre standard, in which dynamic reconfiguration is necessary due to possible failures, changes in the mode of operation. The existing algorithms of static and dynamic placement of administrators in software defined networks (SDN) used in High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, their features and limitations are considered. algorithms for networks based on the SpaceFibre standard are proposed, and the characteristics achievable with their use are evaluated.
