Floating satellite (FloatSat) platform for testing and evaluation of Pico/Nano satellite in nearly a frictionless environment. In this paper, we have presented its basic setup and applications regarding communication and control of its speed and velocity. This proposed educational hardware setup serves as a benchmark for students to learn basic satellite systems/subsystems. Furthermore, the setup can be utilized to test and evaluate control algorithms for various space missions. © 2022 IEEE.

Accurate spectrum measurement is one of the most important measurement tasks in the electric power grids. Knowledge of the complex spectrum allows to indirectly measure the vast majority of signal parameters. These include the parameters of electric power: active, apparent and reactive. The prevailing source of methodological error is the so-called “spectrum leakage” effect. The most common approach to suppress the spectrum leakage effect is the window function application. This approach allows using computationally efficient fast Fourier transform algorithms to obtain the signal spectrum. In this paper, we consider the application of the window function method to measure frequency, amplitude, initial phase and power parameters for the case of using rectangular and Hanning window. Interpolations of the spectrum for different numbers of spectrum samples are considered: one, two, three and five. By using MATLAB and Simulink, simulation models are proposed that allow evaluation of the effectiveness of the presented techniques.

Transmission line challenges are complex because they involve many different factors and are subject to significant fluctuations. These complexities make it crucial to implement precise protective measures. Effective protection ensures that electrical power flows without interruption. To address these challenges, a new classification algorithm is proposed, which is based on CatBoost. This algorithm works in conjunction with a Wavelet Transform-based decomposition system. These tools help in accurately assessing the condition of the transmission lines and responding to any issues that may arise. For practical application, the Indian standard system serves as the simulation model. This system operates at a voltage rating of 220 kV and spans a length of 120 km, with a frequency of 50 Hz. The decomposition frequency is set at 4 kHz, and to perform the Wavelet decomposition method, 80 samples are taken per cycle. A comprehensive data collection occurs within the transmission line using the MULTIRUN block of PSCADTM software. This software is instrumental in gathering the necessary data for analysis. The developed CatBoost algorithm is implemented in MATLAB, ensuring that hyperparameters are optimized for better performance. Once data is collected from PSCADTM, it is then imported into MATLAB for further processing. The CatBoost algorithm is employed to validate the data and assess the performance of the transmission line protection system. The results from this classification reveal that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms traditional methods in protecting transmission lines.

Bio-inspired (and meta-heuristic) algorithms are successfully employed in different domains and the research is going on to accommodate them in all the contexts where optimization is required. In software engineering, and especially software Fault Prediction (SFP), they are investigated in various forms, e.g., to extract the most relevant features in a dataset or to select the most appropriate set of parameter values in the application of estimation techniques. In SFP, feature selection and optimization/tuning of estimation technique's parameters are an active research area, where recently various bio-inspired algorithms have been employed for both strategies. In this work, we present a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) about the use of bio-inspired algorithms for feature selection and parameter optimization aiming at increasing fault prediction accuracy of the models built with various estimation techniques. To the best of our knowledge, there is no SLR in SFP which covers the use of bioinspired algorithms, both for feature selection and parameter optimization. Since, the use of bio-inspired algorithms in the area of SFP started to be investigated in the late 2000, we have considered studies published between 2007 and 2019. As result, we have selected about 19 studies related to parameter optimization and 15 dealing with feature selection (in total 34 studies), extracted from five well-known digital libraries (ACM digital library, IEEE explore, Springer, ScienceDirect, and Scopus). Genetic algorithms (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are the widely used bio-inspired algorithms, both for parameter optimization and feature selection. Among them, GA is the better performed algorithm when evaluating its performance against the baseline (i.e., estimation techniques without any algorithm for feature selection or parameter optimization and trained with their default values). Papua New Guinea (PNG) is an emerging tech society with an opportunity to overcome geographic and social boundaries, in order to engage with the global market. However, the current tech landscape, dominated by Big Tech in Silicon Valley and other multinational companies in the Global North, tends to overlook the requirements of emerging economies such as PNG. This is becoming more obvious as issues such as algorithmic bias (in tech product deployments) and the digital divide (as in the case of non-affordable commercial software) are affecting PNG users. The Open Source software (OSS) movement, based on extant research, is seen as a way to level the playing field in the digitalization and adoption of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in PNG. This perspectives paper documents the outcome of the second International Workshop on BRIdging the Divides with Globally Engineered software (BRIDGES2023) in the hopes of proposing ideas for future research into ICT education, uplifting software engineering (SE) capability, and OSS adoption in promoting a more equitable digital future for PNG.

Although the integration between Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Radio Access Network (RAN) applications is envisioned to enable a variety of new use cases and services, several practical aspects related to autonomous operations over cellular systems are still largely unexplored due to difficulties in testing and validating such integration in the real world. In this paper, we bridge the gap between simulation and real-world applications by introducing a new framework that combines real-world robotic controllers and 5th generation (5G) cellular stacks with channel and flight simulation. We consider a holistic approach where we use ArduPilot as the flight controller and OpenAirInterface (OAI) and srsRAN as the 5G cellular stacks to provide a unified solution for developing and experimenting with UAV s for cellular applications. We utilize ArduPilot software-in-the-Loop (SITL) to simulate and control the mobility of UAVs, while OAI-RFSim and srsRAN are used to model channel conditions. Our framework is particularly useful for developing data-driven solutions that require (i) a large amount of data collected under realistic operational conditions to learn effective control policies; and (ii) a sandbox and safe testing environment that enables exploration of the action space. By addressing a UAV coverage problem and developing a greedy heuristic, we demonstrate how our framework can be used to create and test algorithms in a simulated environment, showcasing its potential as a bridge to real-world applications.

Despite many decades of evolution in navigation algorithm techniques, improving the performance of well understood and accepted workhorse algorithms remains an active research area. Navigation algorithms have distinct computational needs: non-trivial mathematical computations on low-dimensional vectors performed at high rates. In this paper, we explore the potential benefits and best practices of binding per-formant low-level code to flexible high-level scripting languages. By employing exemplar propagation and integration algorithms, we benchmark NumPy, pybind11, nanobind, and pure C++ implementations for execution speed and memory overhead. Our results demonstrate significant speed and marginal memory improvements when utilizing bound low-level code compared to traditional Python/NumPy implementations, highlighting the utility of code-binding for navigation challenges. Quantifying these performance gains is particularly valuable for software architecture designs that balance development agility with computational efficiency. As binding tools progress, our findings present a pertinent snapshot of their current performance in the context of navigation *** find that nanobind performs comparably to pybind11 in our test scenarios, particularly excelling in binding primitive data types. Additionally, our analysis indicates that the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler significantly underperforms GCC and Clang, leading us to discourage its use for compiling binder code. We provide recommended optimization flags to maximize binder *** have released our analysis software, which includes a benchmarking framework specifically designed for navigation problems utilizing code binders. Our versatile benchmarking methods can be readily utilized for profiling other navigation algorithms to assess and improve code efficiency. Although classical computing has excelled in a wide range of applications, there remain problems that push the limits of its capabilities, especially in fields like cryptography, optimization, and materials science. Quantum computing introduces a new computational paradigm, based on principles of superposition and entanglement to explore solutions beyond the capabilities of classical computation. With the increasing interest in the field, there are challenges and opportunities for academics and practitioners in terms of software engineering practices, particularly in testing quantum programs. This paper presents an empirical study of testing patterns in quantum algorithms. We analyzed all the tests handling quantum aspects of the implementations in the Qiskit algorithms library and identified seven distinct patterns that make use of (1) fixed seeds for algorithms based on random elements; (2) deterministic oracles; (3) precise and approximate assertions; (4) Data-Driven Testing (DDT); (5) functional testing; (6) testing for intermediate parts of the algorithms being tested; and (7) equivalence checking for quantum circuits. Our results show a prevalence of classical testing techniques to test the quantum-related elements of the library, while recent advances from the research community have yet to achieve wide adoption among practitioners.

In today's world, automatic coffee makers are essential to provide effective and refreshing beverage service. This paper introduces an innovative control algorithm specifically designed for coffee automation systems. The algorithm utilizes Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL) to enable the operation of nine unique beverage modes, such as caramel frappe, affogato, cappuccino, espresso, and milk. Utilizing programmable logic, the algorithm was developed and validated using the Questa Sim software, demonstrating its ability to improve operational efficiency and user experience. By implementing a finite state machine (FSM) architecture, the algorithm guarantees accurate measurement of ingredients, and intuitive user-friendly experiences. The system’s module architecture enables smooth incorporation of supplementary features and scalability, eliminating the need for hardware adjustments. This paper underscores the conceptualization, execution, and the efficacy of the automated coffee machine control system, which streamlines the process of preparing coffee in commercial and residential environments.

In this paper, a multi-feature detection method based on graph cut for photovoltaic panels is proposed. Combined with multi-dimensional features such as optical flow field and light intensity, an interactive feature recognition method is constructed. The combination of each feature forms a pixel feature vector and is fed into a random forest classifier. The interaction information between adjacent pixel pairs is extracted. The energy function and adaptive algorithm of object-based occlusion detection are constructed. This Paper build an undirected graph. The object is segmented by the graph cutting principle. The findings from the experiments indicate that the new technique surpasses traditional methods in precision and offers enhanced responsiveness for detecting obstructions.
