A critical issue for complex component-based systems design is the modeling and analysis of architecture. Architectural specifications of software systems show them as a collection of interrelated components, and constitute what has been called the software architecture level of software design. It is at this level where the description and verification of structural properties of the system are naturally addressed. Besides, the use of explicit descriptions of the architecture of software systems enhances system comprehension and promotes software reuse. We have developed a tool-the Web-Based software architecture Prototyping System (SAPS)-in a distributed environment to meet the requirements of integrating software components into heterogeneous networks. Our system architecture design environment includes a Web-based software architecture Editor, the Java Code Generator (JCG), a Reusable Assets Repository (RAR), and a Platform Distribution Controller (PDC). By using the wrapper/glue technique, different simulation tools in a heterogeneous environment share the input/output data files for prototypes. The architecture is generalized for the communication among software components necessary for data interchange. Our system not only provides a useful array of tools for distributed real-time system prototyping, but also is a demonstration of the effective use of a distributed system in a heterogeneous environment.

Blended modelling is an emerging trend in Model-Driven Engineering for complex software architectures. It enables the modelling of diverse architectural aspects through multiple editing notations seamlessly, interchangeably, and collaboratively. Blended modelling is expected to significantly improve productivity and user experience for multiple stakeholders. To manually architect and build a blended modelling environment is not trivial. To support architects in this task, in the scope of the ITEA3 BUMBLE project, we have designed and developed a blended modelling framework that aids architects in designing and semi-automatically generating blended modelling environments for architecting software. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes an architecture concept to the design of software, for embedded systems and cooperating embedded systems, aimed to simplify not only design but also reuse and reconfigurability. The concept is targeted at software for recurring signal processing and control tasks common in industrial embedded supervision and control applications. An important part of the architecture concept is that the design work is partitioned and described at two major levels. The first level is focused on definition of data structures and reentrant data mapping functions to be supported by a restricted use of an existing programming language. The second level, i.e. the system level, focuses on structural and behavioral concerns including: component encapsulation, connection of actions and components via ports. This level, also handling delays, triggers and actors, is supported by a system modeling language. The thus partitioned approach makes the different design and engineering concerns well separated which simplifies both analysis and verification of functional and time behavioral correctness, compared to if they are mixed and intertwined into each other. Another gain with the proposed architecture concept is that the number of operating system (OS) threads and associated overhead needed to share the processor or a set of processors in a distributed or multi-core case is minimized.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly growing technology trend that seeks to bridge the gap between the physical and digital worlds. Given the complexity of IoT systems, design patterns are essential to overcome recurring problems. However, IoT design patterns must be modeled as valid mathematical entities to avoid implementation errors and ambiguities. This study proposes a refinement-based approach for modeling IoT design patterns using formal method techniques, which enable the creation of correct-by-construction patterns. Our approach uses the Event-B method to specify the models and validate the design. The ultimate goal is to design IoT patterns in a way that ensures their correctness and encourages their reuse. The results of this approach show that it can ensure quality attribute properties while saving time and costs related to software development. We test our approach with examples of patterns and provide a proposed solution in the healthcare sector. A common practice in software architecture design is to apply architectural views to model the design decisions for the various stakeholder concerns. When dealing with quality concerns, however, it is more difficult to address these explicitly in the architectural views. This is because quality concerns do not easily match the architectural elements that seem to be primarily functional in nature. As a result, the communication and analysis of these quality concerns becomes more problematic in practice. We introduce a general and practical approach for supporting architects to model quality concerns by extending the architectural viewpoints of the so-called V&B approach. We illustrate the approach for defining recoverability and adaptability viewpoints for an open source software architecture.

Important information about interaction context is developed during the design process. In this article, we propose a formalism to encode and preserve this information during system implementation.
