Context: The software industry has invested efforts to identify and understand the soft skills required for good software developers in recent years. Problem: However, with the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was observed that the soft skills of developers suffer impacts, mainly on the mental health and well-being of people and their families. Objective: In this context, this work aims to obtain an overview of the impacts that the soft skills of software developers suffered when facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: For this, we conducted a survey with software developers to obtain an overview of this scenario. Results: we received 101 responses from different states in Brazil, in which software developers indicated which soft skills they believe were positively, negatively impacted or those that were not affected. In addition, respondents also indicated which soft skills they believe were acquired after this event. Conclusion: From the results, we observed that most developers believe that their skills were positively impacted after the COVID-19 pandemic. Among them, the following stand out: flexibility, empathy, adaptability, fast learning, and desire to learn.

software development requires software developers to share knowledge and solve problems together. Although researchers have considered the business and technical knowledge germane to performing software development tasks, empirical studies investigating business and technical advice networks on problem-solving competence is scarce. Using social network theory, we argue that software developers must be embedded for knowledge brokering within and across business and technical advice connectedness for improving problem-solving competence. Moreover, we argue that contact quality matters in increasing or decreasing individual problem-solving competence. We present data collected via an online survey from 153 respondents in a professional software organisation. Our findings suggest that software developers who engage in knowledge brokering in business and technical advice connectedness will increase problem-solving competence in the software development effort. Our findings also reveal no significant effect of contact quality between these advice networks and problem-solving competence. We discuss our findings' implications for theory and practice. software development depends heavily on human efforts and collaborations, which are simultaneously influenced by human emotions, and it is considered among the most difficult tasks. software developers are susceptible to various health concerns such as burnout, anxiety and depression due to the work nature and demands of the software industry, and this may have detrimental effects on their performance. However, evidence portray significant beneficial effects of positive emotions on well-being, growth, and success. Accordingly, this paper investigates the relevance of positive emotions among software developers and strives to understand how positive emotions benefit developers' performance. It surveys literature that examine the importance of affect among developers and the benefits of positive emotions on human well-being and employs a narrative style to present these aspects. This review discusses the potential mechanisms that underlie the association between frequent experiences of positive emotions and improved performance and suggests that positive emotions benefit developers' performance. This emotional awareness has the potential to enhance the developer efficacy, thus contributing to the discipline of ergonomics. Findings also have positive implications for organisational counsellors as they help in developing and maintaining a positive organisational climate.

Push notifications, which are at the core of most modern productivity and social tools, come in different shapes and sizes - all competing for one's attention while creating the illusion of multitasking. At best, a notification may intervene in support of a primary task (e.g., a note about the correct use of a library), and at worst a notification may result in a complete context switch (e.g., answering an urgent and unrelated email). This paper presents a controlled single blind study conducted with 65 software professionals with the aim to further understand how different types of notifications may affect people during an immersive task. Insights are drawn from various angles, including mouse pointer logs, session recordings, temporal measures (e.g., time on task and time to resume task) as well as subjective workload assessments. Results indicate that participants who received either actionable or informational interventions managed to resume their tasks more efficiently than those who received actionable or informational intrusions. Actionable intrusions had a significant impact on overall task duration and levels of perceived effort while informational intrusions, which were largely ignored, had the largest impact on the participant's ability to resume the task efficiently, which also resulted in high levels of frustration. The time to decide whether to engage with a notification was also a factor that contributed to the overall task duration, and this was particularly noticed when an actionable intervention was presented, resulting in a significant impact on mental demand and perceived performance.

In the teaching-learning processes, research and continuous innovation are encouraged. Now, when talking about innovation, the concept of adapting methodologies that have been successfully applied to speed up and increase the quality of software projects begins to emerge, is the case of agile software development methodologies. Scrum is one of the most widely used methodologies in the software development process, it increases productivity and deliverable quality of software development teams, but there is not much evidence of how to use it to structure learning content and its use to transfer new knowledge in training or software development contexts. To fill this gap, this research analyzes the applicability of Scrum for transferring new knowledge among software developers is developed. In this paper, we describe the details of how to start transferring knowledge using Scrum, guiding the reader through its standards, processes, phases, and objectives. We also report an experiment for improving students' performance to support the approach's benefits in the academy context and a case study performed inside the company context.

The impact of human aspects on the interactions between software developers and end-users in software engineering: A systematic literature review

Context: Research on human aspects within the field of software engineering (SE) has been steadily gaining prominence in recent years. These human aspects have a significant impact on SE due to the inherently interactive and collaborative nature of the discipline. Objective: In this paper, we present a systematic literature review (SLR) on human aspects affecting developeruser interactions. The objective of this SLR is to plot the current landscape of primary studies by examining the human aspects that influence developer-user interactions, their implications, interrelationships, and how existing studies address these implications. Method: We conducted this SLR following the guidelines proposed by Kitchenham et al. We performed a comprehensive search in six digital databases, and an exhaustive backward and forward snowballing process. We selected 46 primary studies for data extraction. Results: We identified various human aspects affecting developer-user interactions in SE, assessed their interrelationships, identified their positive impacts and mitigation strategies for negative effects. We present specific recommendations derived from the identified research gaps. Conclusion: Our findings suggest the importance of leveraging positive effects and addressing negative effects in developer-user interactions through the implementation of effective mitigation strategies. These insights may benefit software practitioners for effective user interactions, and the recommendations proposed by this SLR may aid the research community in further human aspects related studies.

Previous research has been carried out to identify the impediments that prevent developers from incorporating privacy protocols into software applications. No research has been carried out to find out why developers are not able to develop systems that preserve privacy while specifically considering the General Data Protection Regulation principles (GDPR principles). Consequently, this paper aims to examine the issues, which prevent developers from creating applications, which consider and include GDPR principles into their software systems. From our research findings, we identified the lack of familiarity with GDPR principles by developers as one of the obstacles that prevent GDPR onboarding. Those who were familiar with the principles did not have the requisite knowledge about the principles including their techniques. developers focused on functional than on privacy requirements. Unavailability of resourceful online tools and lack of support from institutions and clients were also identified as issues inimical to the onboarding of GDPR principles.

The coronavirus COVID-19 swept the world in early 2020, working from home was a necessity. In the software industry, thousands of software developers began working from home, many did so on short notice, under difficult and stressful conditions. The emotions of developers can be affected by this situation. software engineering research lacks theory and methodologies for addressing human aspects in software development. In this paper we present an exploratory study with a survey applied to practitioners in the west border area of Mexico-USA. This study is focused on the developers' wellbeing during pandemic, expressed as emotions. The results show that high percent expressed to experience positive emotions such as optimism, serenity, happiness, acceptance, trust, and interest;however, even when negative emotions are not experienced in a significant level, a portion of respondents expressed to feel them. 91.0% expressed to be satisfied working from home, however, some conditions should be improved.

Responding to a digital interruption requires software developers to transfer their attention from their ongoing task to the contents of the notification: a shift which will disrupt their original flow of work. This paper distinguishes between different types of notifications (intrusions and interruptions) and reflects upon the results of a survey with 88 respondents. This study contributes to research by providing insights consistent with literature, particularly related to how users react to push-based notifications during varying contexts, how the software developers perceive the cost and benefits of a notification, what features stand out in a notification and the strategies used to continue their work following a notification.

The growing popularity of machine learning (ML) has attracted more software developers to now want to adopt ML into their own practices, through tinkering with and learning from ML framework websites and online code examples. To investigate the motivations, hurdles, and desires of these software developers, we deployed a survey to the website of the *** ML framework. We found via 645 responses that many wanted to learn NIL for aspirational reasons rather than for immediate job needs. Critically, developers faced hurdles due to a perceived lack of mathematical and theoretical background. They desired frameworks to provide more basic ML conceptual support, such as a curated corpus of best practices, conceptual tutorials, and a de-mystification of mathematical jargon into practical tips. These findings inform the design of ML frameworks and informal learning resources to broaden the base of people acquiring this increasingly important skill set.
