Dry dual clutches are widely used in conventional and innovative automotive vehicles. The engagement control of dry dual clutches is a not easy task because of the synergic interaction of the two clutches in terms of their corresponding torque transmissibility characteristics. In this scenario the socalled software in the loop approach can represent a foundamental preliminary and driving step for hardware in the loop and on vehicle testing of new engagement strategies. This paper proposes a software in the loop model for dry dual clutch transmission control systems, developed by Fiat for new C635 transmission family and its future evolutions. The vehicle model includes the representation of the shift process for a six-speed dry-type dual clutch transmission. The transmission model is used to design a decoupling engagement controller of the dual clutch.

Considering the rapid development of renewable energy technologies, particularly solar cells, electrochemical and other types of energy storage as well as power electronics converters, autonomous power supply systems are becoming an alternative to the construction of a new electrical grid connection for microscale electric power consumers (by the classification of the European Parliament Directive 2004/8/EK - the maximum simultaneous power up to 50 kW), for example, small agricultural facilities, farms, greenhouses, estates, tourist attractions etc. The article demonstrates use of the software in the loop (SIL) approach in the simulation of renewable resources based autonomous hybrid power supply (HPS) segment and facility-level control systems. Simulation of such type allows to design, test and evaluate control software written in conventional programming languages, but dynamic models of plant, sensors and actuators used are simulated in specialized environment e.g. Matlab Simulink or Scilab Xcos. An example of autonomous HPS of a cattle farm was used as a case study.

Parallel and sequential job scheduling in heterogeneous clusters: A simulation study using software in the loop

The task of designing and optimizing job scheduling algorithms for heterogeneous computing environments requires the ability to predict scheduling performance. The complexity of heterogeneous scheduling issues requires that the experiments devised to test a scheduling paradigm to be both flexible and extensive. Experimentally determined models for the prediction of job execution times on both sequential and parallel computing resources are combined with the implementation of a novel scheduling algorithm and a software-in-the-loop (SWIL) simulation. The result is a potent design and analysis approach for job scheduling algorithms and implementations intended for heterogeneous environments. This paper develops the concepts, mechanisms, and results of a SWIL design and analysis approach. The merits of this approach are shown in four case studies, which determine overhead, scheduling performance, and the impact of preemption and priority policies. These case studies illustrate the contributions of this research in the form of a new parallel job scheduling algorithm for heterogeneous computing and in the novel application of SWIL simulation to the analysis of job scheduling systems.

This paper presents the design of the altitude controller of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based on the data acquired from the software in the loop (SITL). More specifically, the developed methodology permits to describe a test procedure where an algorithm or even a control strategy can be designed and validated based on the physical model of the system. In this way, the PID controller with a technique known as Successive loop Closure is designed. The paper also shows how to establish a remote communication with the quadcopter using all the versatility of the software in the loop (SITL) in combination with a Ground Control Station and Dronekit developing tool. Finally, the flight simulation tests show that the designed controller was able to reach a stable flight with its performance evaluated through non-intrusive performance indexes and analysis of the system response in the time domain.

In order to investigate the grid integration of wind turbines (WT) of various scales and designs, a wind turbine emulator (WTE) is being built in Flensburg within the state-funded project GrinSH. The special feature of this WTE is the use of a large gas engine instead of an electric motor to emulate the behavior of a WT. In order to develop the controls of this innovative WTE and to design the upcoming test runs under safe conditions, a software in the loop model (SILM) was applied. This SILM contained a mathematical model of the wind turbine, mathematical models of the gas engine with an integrated controller, and a model of the generator and frequency converter unit, as well as a preventive modulator of the reference signal (PMRS). The PMRS module converts the reference signal of the emulated WT in such a way that the dynamics of the engine components can be calculated and balanced in advance to enable the required behavior of the entire SILM despite the dynamics of the gas engine. It was found that the PMRS module, developed and tested in this work, increased the ability of the WTE, based on a gas engine, to reproduce the dynamics of a WT.

Novel Algorithm for Tracking LEO Satellites Using Doppler Frequency Shift Technique

Communication between satellite and ground station requires the antenna to be directly towards satellite for telemetery and telecommand data exchange. Hence, role of satellite tracking is clear. There are various techniques for satellite tracking. In this paper, Doppler technique for tracking LEO satellites from a ground station is discussed. This technique is a precise, beneficial and easy method compared with others. First, Doppler shift is obtained using TLE and equations governing on satellites and their orbit. Then this Doppler shift is compared with an obtained Doppler shift called practical Doppler shift which is obtained via a radio receiver at the ground station. This comparison leads to a tracking error which is removed in control loop by auto tracking process. Hence tracking angles are created with no error leading to a precise satellite tracking. This method acts as software in the loop which performs the act of satellite tracking.

Design and verification of photovoltaic MPPT algorithm as an automotive-based embedded software

This paper presents the design and verification process of the Maximum Power Point Tracking Controller in accordance with the automotive development process standards, which could be used in Photovoltaic charging stations or in on-board chargers of electric vehicles. Considered as an automotive embedded software, the designed MPPT controller follows a sequence of three tests of the Model-based design MBD Approach to be verified and validated. The ultimate aim is to present a road map to design, test and validate an embedded software of the MPPT algorithm in vehicle based software. We design a modified Perturb and Observe P&O algorithm, then we generate optimized C code for a 32 bit ARM cortex microcontroller. Next, the algorithm is simulated through Model-in-the loop MIL, software-in-the loop SIL, and finally co-simulated through Processor-in-the-loop PIL technique in the low cost STM32F429 discovery development board. During all the different tests, the designed embedded software shows a high accordance with MPPT requirement and high performances.

Designing MPC algorithms for velocity control of brushed DC motor and verification with SIL tests

The model predictive control (MPC) tries to find the best control output by optimizing among the predictions. In this context, determining the objective function of optimization is a critical process. This study discusses the velocity control of the mini brushed direct current (BDC) motor used in the actuator with MPC. Four different functions have been defined to design the most appropriate cost function for MPC by considering the parameters that may be effective in the motor dynamics such as velocity, current, power, and switching states. software in the loop (SIL), one of the modeling-based testing methods, was used within the scope of testing the algorithms. After the SIL tests, it has been observed that the mini BDC motor can be successfully controlled with simple adjustments to the cost function of the MPC. As a result of the analysis obtained the best results with the objective function consisting of velocity error, estimated current, and the difference between the two estimated velocity values. With this controller, the BDC motor can be controlled without overshoot and with a steady-state error of less than 2% under load.
