software process simulation (SPS) has been evolving over the past two decades after being introduced to the software engineering community in the 1980s. At that time the SPS technology attracted a great deal of interest from both academics and practitioners in the software process communityeven to the extent of being one of the recommended techniques for achieving multiple Key process Areas of Level 4 of the Capability Maturity Model Integration. However, in recent years, the growth of SPS seems to have slowed along with the number of reported applications in industry. This article summarizes the special panel that was held during ICSSP 2012 whose goals were to assess whether this technology remains applicable to today's software engineering projects and challenges and to point out the most beneficial opportunities for future research and industry application. software process simulation (SPS) research has increased since 1998 when the first ProSim Workshop was held. This paper aims to reveal how SPS has evolved during the past 10 years based on the preliminary results from the systematic literature review of SPS publications from 1998 to 2007. Trends over the period showed that interest in continuous modelling was decreasing and interest in micro-processes was increasing. Hybrid models were based primarily on system dynamics and discrete event simulation and were all implemented by vertical integration.

The goal of our research is to find better ways for assessing the impact of changes to the software projects and the cost-effectiveness of process improvement strategies. To support decision-makers in analyzing changes effects and finding the optimal improvements of software process in a given project, a process simulation model using the system dynamics modeling technique is proposed and used in the context of a case study with open source software. Details of the system dynamics model, its usage scenarios and simulation experiments are provided. With the help of the simulation model, the process quality attributes of the open source software Spring Framework with varying change effects was evaluated. The project effort, delivery time, productivity, schedule, and product quality are impacted as a result of changes. Three different process improvement strategies were evaluated to help decision-makers choose most cost-effective improvement strategies. The simulation models can be used as an effective tool to evaluate the impact of changes, reason about the process improvement, and support consensus building by visualizing dynamic views of the process.

A systematic literature review on the industrial use of software process simulation

Context: software process simulation modelling (SPSM) captures the dynamic behaviour and uncertainty in the software process. Existing literature has conflicting claims about its practical usefulness: SPSM is useful and has an industrial impact;SPSM is useful and has no industrial impact yet;SPSM is not useful and has little potential for industry. Objective: To assess the conflicting standpoints on the usefulness of SPSM. Method: A systematic literature review was performed to identify, assess and aggregate empirical evidence on the usefulness of SPSM. Results: In the primary studies, to date, the persistent trend is that of proof-of-concept applications of software process simulation for various purposes (e.g. estimation, training, process improvement, etc.). They score poorly on the stated quality criteria. Also only a few studies report some initial evaluation of the simulation models for the intended purposes. Conclusion: There is a lack of conclusive evidence to substantiate the claimed usefulness of SPSM for any of the intended purposes. A few studies that report the cost of applying simulation do not support the claim that it is an inexpensive method. Furthermore, there is a paramount need for improvement in conducting and reporting simulation studies with an emphasis on evaluation against the intended purpose. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. software process simulation is a complex task and in order to conduct a simulation project practitioners require support through a process for software process simulation modelling (SPSM), including what steps to take and what guidelines to follow in each step. This paper provides a literature based consolidated process for SPSM where the steps and guidelines for each step are identified through a review of literature and are complemented by experience from using these recommendations in an action research at a large Telecommunication vendor. We found five simulation processes in SPSM literature, resulting in a seven-step process. The consolidated process was successfully applied at the studied company, with the experiences of doing so being reported.

software process simulation modeling (SPSM) has become an increasingly active research area since its introduction in the late 1980s. Particularly during the last ten years the related research community and the number of publications have been growing. The objective of this research is to provide insights about the evolution of SPSM research during the last 10 years. A systematic literature review was proposed with two subsequent stages to achieve this goal. This paper presents the preliminary results of the first stage of the review that is exclusively focusing on a core set of publication sources. More than 200 relevant publications were analyzed in order to find answers to the research questions, including the purposes and scopes of SPSM, application domains, and predominant research issues. From the analysis the following conclusions could be drawn: (1) Categories for classifying software process simulation models as suggested by the authors of a landmark publication in 1999 should be adjusted and refined to better capture the diversity of published models. (2) Research improving the efficiency of SPSM is gaining importance. (3) Hybrid process simulation models have attracted interest as a possibility to more realistically capture complex real-world software processes.

In this article, we present a simulation model that we developed for exploring the influence of two key Extreme Programming (XP) practices — Test-first Programming and Pair Programming — on the evolution of an XP software project. We present the results obtained simulating a typical XP project changing the usage levels of the two practices. Heuristic optimization as a V&V tool for software process simulation models

This work illustrates the use of heuristic algorithms to improve the verification and validation of software process simulation models. To use this approach, an optimization problem is formulated to guide a heuristic search algorithm that will attempt to locate particular combinations of parameter values that yield surprising results. These surprising results often help the modeler to identify flaws in the model logic that would otherwise remain undetected. The general concepts are discussed and a simple example is provided. A software maintenance process is important for reducing maintenance effort and for improving software quality. In recent years, the Lean-Kanban approach has been widely applied in software practice including software maintenance. This approach minimizes Work-in-Progress (WIP), which is the number of items that are worked on by the team at any given time, thus improving the maintenance process. In this paper, we describe our simulation studies, which show that the Lean-Kanban approach can indeed help reduce the average time needed to complete maintenance requests. We develop a process simulator that can simulate both existing maintenance processes that do not use a WIP limit and that adopt it. We perform two case studies using real maintenance data collected from a Microsoft project and from a Chinese software firm. The main results of our study are twofold. First, we demonstrate that it is possible to effectively model and simulate, using actors and events, a maintenance process where a flow of issues is processed through a sequence of activities, correctly reproducing key statistics of real data. Second, our results confirm that the WIP-limited process could be useful to increase the efficiency of software maintenance, as reported in previous industrial practices. Automatic allocation of resources in software process simulations using their capability and productivity

software processes are very dependent on human behaviour, creativity and productivity. Business process management (BPM) simulation models are trying to model these properties to provide more precise information about the progress and parameters of the process. This paper describes a method for specifying competencies of resources in the process using competency models. These competencies are used to simulate human resource capability and productivity that influences the duration and allocation of resources to activities in the process. Different allocation strategies are based on this capability and productivity model to determine which resources should be allocated during automatic simulations. This method is then integrated into the BPM method simulation environment that is used to compare these allocation strategies in software process simulations for a middle-sized software development company.
