A Cooperative P2P Trading Framework: Developed and Validated Through Hardware-in-loop

In the past five years, the importance of peer-to-peer (P2P) trading for promoting the use of renewable energy has been demonstrated in many scientific literature and pilot projects. However, a large-scale demonstration of P2P trading in today's electricity market is yet to be implemented. The reason for this can be partially attributed to two factors. First, most existing pilot projects focus on the aspects of communications between different participants and settlements of energy trading parameters between them without giving considerable attention to the impact of such trading on the distribution network. Second, scientific studies that have rigorously investigated the impact on distribution networks mostly validated their frameworks using numerical simulations without substantiating the findings through hardware implementation. In this paper, this gap is addressed by proposing a ready-to-implement canonical coalition game-based P2P energy trading scheme for electricity customers within a local distribution network. It is shown that the proposed scheme not only guarantees stable and fair outcomes for all participants, but also satisfies all mandatory power network constraints during the trading process. Importantly, the proposed framework is implemented in an RSCAD-RTDS (real-time digital simulator) platform and the readiness of the scheme for a real-field trial is demonstrated through validation in software-in-loop and hardware-in-loop setups. The usefulness and suitability of the proposed scheme to be implemented in today's electricity network are established via both software-in-loop and hardware-in-loop case studies.

This study proposes real-time simulation of a state estimation technique for a sensorless PMSM drive. The OPAL-RT simulator has been used to simulate the PMSM drive with complete circuit in a software-in-loop (SIL) environment. Model reference adaptive system based state estimation technique has been used to estimate the speed and rotor position of the PMSM. PI controller has been used to control the speed of PMSM. The performance of the PMSM drive is analysed at different loading conditions. The comparison is made between the actual speed of the motor and estimated speed at different loading conditions.

Real-time monitoring of system behavior is an integral part of modern power system operation and control. With the increasing demand, it is becoming critical and very essential to monitor system states for quick decisions to prevent the cascading blackout. Availability of phasor measurement units (PMUs) has been proven a cornerstone for real-time monitoring of the system at some of the specific locations, where these devices are placed. However, higher cost and required communication infrastructure limit the placement of PMUs at some optimal places only. Although many research works have been done for PMU based linear state estimator (LSE), online implementation and validation of various estimation algorithms at control centers are yet to be fully established. This paper presents the systematic procedure of digital simulation in the OPAL-RT HYPERSIM, generation of the IEEE C.37-118 protocol compliant synchronized measurements, and validation of state estimation algorithms in the real-time environment.

This paper introduces a new method of modeling microcontroller-based systems in a non-real-time electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation. Presently, power electronic control system simulation relies chiefly on either simplified control block models in a non-real-time simulator or real-time hardware-in-loop simulation. Migrating control block models from the simulated design to actual microcontroller hardware requires significant additional effort. Real-time hardware-in-loop simulation requires complex interfacing using costly real-time hardware. The method described in this paper replaces control system blocks in non-real-time simulation with actual microcontroller code. The method enables both software-in-loop simulation and processor-in-loop co-simulation, eliminates the drawbacks of the simulation methods described above, and allows direct optimization of the actual controller hardware. The method is demonstrated by simulations of a three-phase ac motor controller in both software- and processor-in-loop configurations. The simulations are verified by laboratory results obtained using the tuned microcontroller hardware to implement a control system for a 3-phase ac motor.

Due to the advancements in the smart grid technologies, smart mechanisms are required within the Energy Management System (EMS) environments for microgrids. One of the functionalities of EMS is to ensure grid stability. In order to test and validate new mechanisms, appropriate simulation tools exist. Most of the existing validation strategies include modeling the target system in simulation environment and then deploying the mechanism in the real environment. When the validated mechanisms are implemented in real environment, they often do not work as intended and require modification due to the implementation difference within the EMS controller. An EMS should be able to communicate with the simulated model, inject faults in the simulated model and able to perform various control actions. In this paper, we propose a software-in-loop approach, where the grid stability mechanisms are implemented in the EMS, which is deployed in the real environment. EMS must operate exactly the way it does in the simulation environment. For such a capability, the simulation platform should be able to communicate with the EMS. In this work, we consider a 13-node radial distribution grid with one solar panel as a generation unit. The 13-node distribution grid has been modeled using Apros simulation software. SMG2.0, a software application for microgrid is used to monitor, inject electrical faults and trigger recovery mechanisms in the Apros model. A communication architecture called ICT gateway has been developed between Apros and the EMS (SMG2.0). Two fault scenarios (line-breakage and under-voltage) are considered as the fault injection scenarios to evaluate the performance of the communication architecture. When the SMG2.0 detects a line fault, it triggers network reconfiguration as the recovery strategy for the line-breakage scenario in the simulation environment. An analytical review on automatic gear shifting in automatic transmission

This paper presents a literature overview of factors, both internal and external, modelled for improving the shift-quality in automobiles through the development of a robust electronic transmission control unit (TCU). Such robustness, designed with considerations of internal and external factors, are essential for safety and driving comfort. As automobiles are becoming more sophisticated, the application of electronics and embedded systems is increasing for different functional control system designs, including the gear-shifting mechanism. An automotive transmission system equipped with electronic or electrohydraulic actuators, controlled by an electronic control unit, provides clutch-less driving experience to the driver for the shifting operation. TCU is used for automatic speed and torque control in different driving situations, and reduces the human error in gear selection for facilitating safe and comfortable driving. In the development of such a mechatronic controller, it is critical to find a robust control strategy in the context of semi-autonomous vehicles.
