Two measures of presortedness, Dist(X) and logDist(X), are presented. The measures are motivated by a geometric interpretation of the input sequence X. Using these measures, an exact characterization of the local insertion sort algorithm of Mannila is achieved. Variants of local insertion sort, using many fingers (i.e., pointers into a finger search tree) instead of only one, are suggested. The number can either be fixed beforehand or dynamic, i.e., vary during the sorting process. Different strategies for moving the fingers yield different algorithms. Some general conditions which all strategies should satisfy are stated, and two such strategies are given. Furthermore, a method for designing dynamic algorithms that allocate an optimal number of fingers is provided. For any specific strategy satisfying our conditions, this method yields an optimal algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1989.

Data mining, which is a technique to extract variable information from enormous data, becomes more and more important. Real data often has missing values. Therefore, a method for estimating the missing data is required in application of data mining. Using multiple self-organizing maps (MSOM) proposed by Kikuchi et al. is one of such estimating method. This method does not need a concrete mathematical model and is also available for nonlinear data. However the performance for various missing patterns were unclear, in addition, the comparisons with conventional imputation methods were not provided. This paper demonstrates the performance and the comparison results through simulation experiments with various missing patterns and conventional methods.

Considering the capacitor voltage balance (CVB) in modular multilevel converter (MMC), classical complete sorting algorithms, especially used in MMC with a large number of submodules (SMs), usually result in too much computational load and resource consumption. A fast selection algorithm based on binary numbers is proposed to achieve CVB in MMC. The algorithm needs not fully sorting all the numbers, and the complexity of it rapidly decreases by using a binary division mechanism. These properties make the proposed algorithm fast and resource-saving, and easily being implemented in many types of microcontrollers. Taking into account the needs of engineering applications, some techniques used to improve algorithm speed and reduce Filed Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) resource consumption are discussed when implementing algorithms in FPGA. The required resources and execution time of the proposed algorithm is evaluated, and a comparison between the proposed algorithm and some other sorting algorithms is used to verify the conclusions.

Multi-label classification is a popular learning task. However, some of the algorithms that learn from multi-label data, can only output a score for each label, so they cannot be readily used in applications that require bipartitions. In addition, several of the recent state-of-the-art multi-label classification algorithms, actually output a score vector primarily and employ one (sometimes simple) thresholding method in order to be able to output bipartitions. Furthermore, some approaches can naturally output both a score vector and a bipartition, but whether a better bipartition can be obtained through thresholding has not been investigated. This paper contributes a theoretical and empirical comparative study of existing thresholding methods, highlighting their importance for obtaining bipartitions of high quality.

In cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter, despite its high modularity, each h-bridge cell requires an isolated dcsource. The phase-shifting transformer in cascaded h-bridge (CHB) converter is its main drawback. New topologies have been introduced with a reduced number of DC sources e.g. MMC. But it needs lots of semiconductor components. A new topology is proposed in this paper which is called cascaded flying cells (CFC). This topology provides high modularity and uses a single DC-link per phase. A sorting algorithm is proposed in this paper by which the voltages of flying capacitors in the converter cells are kept balanced with a constant switching frequency. Compared to several reduced count multilevel converters, it provides high modularity and better controllability of capacitor voltages. The proper operation of a five-level CFC is simulated in both steady-state and dynamic conditions in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.

The real-time audience measurement system consists of five consecutive stages: face detection, face tracking, gender recognition, age classification and in-cloud data statistics analysis. The challenging part of such system is age estimation algorithm on the basis of machine learning methods. The face aging process is determined by different factors: genetic, lifestyle, expression and environment. That is why same age people can have quite different rates of facial aging. We propose a novel algorithm consisting of two stages: adaptive feature extraction based on local binary patterns and support vector machine classification. Experimental results on the FG-NET, MORPH and our own database are presented. Human perception ability in age estimation is studied using crowdsourcing which allows a comparison of the ability of machines and humans.

Personality is an important factor that affects human's behavior. In recent years attraction towards online social networks has increased tremendously. Due to its unique features social networks are very suitable platforms for psychological analysis. By investigating 65 facebook users which participated in this research, correlation between personality traits and user liking behavior was observed. Classification algorithms were applied to classify personality traits based on user liking activity. Among classifiers, the SVM classifier outperforms other classifiers in most traits.

Robotic end-effectors in automated production lines are specially designed and built for a unique task and for a particular part. An end-effector capable of grasping different parts with different geometries will expand its benefit and reduce costs. This work focuses on the grasp of sheet metal parts for the automotive industry. In order to maximize the use of a single end-effector, this paper proposes a search algorithm for a simple common grasp configuration. Such configuration imply for an end-effector design capable of grasping a set of sheet metal parts. The algorithm maps possible grasps which are candidate to be common. We define a novel quality measure estimating the distribution of the contacts across the sheet metal part. Candidate grasps which have a sufficient quality are mapped into high-dimensional feature vectors. These feature vectors parameterize the geometry of the polyhedron formed by the contacts locations and the direction of the surface normals relative to the polyhedron. Thereby, they describe the design of the end-effector compatible to the grasp. A database is generated for all possible grasps for each part in the feature vector space. A similarity join based on nearest-neighbor search and classification algorithm are used for intersecting all possible feature vectors over all sheet metal parts and finding common ones. Simulations of a 3-finger grasp on four meshed sheet metal parts resulted in a common grasp. Results of the simulations validate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

This paper presents a new feature selection technique based on rough sets and bat algorithm (BA). BA is attractive for feature selection in that bats will discover best feature combinations as they fly within the feature subset space. Compared with GAs, BA does not need complex operators such as crossover and mutation, it requires only primitive and simple mathematical operators, and is computationally inexpensive in terms of both memory and runtime. A fitness function based on rough-sets is designed as a target for the optimization. The used fitness function incorporates both the classification accuracy and number of selected features and hence balances the classification performance and reduction size. This paper make use of four initialisation strategies for starting the optimization and studies its effect on bat performance. The used initialization reflects forward and backward feature selection and combination of both. Experimentation is carried out using VCI data sets which compares the proposed algorithm with a GA-based and PSO approaches for feature reduction based on rough-set algorithms. The results on different data sets shows that bat algorithm is efficient for rough set-based feature selection. The used rough-set based fitness function ensures better classification result keeping also minor feature size.
