A new incremental learning algorithm is described which approximates the maximal margin hyperplane w.r.t. Norm p ≥ 2 for a set of linearly separable data. Our algorithm, called ALMA_p (Approximate Large Margin algorithm w.r.t. Norm p), takes O ((p-1) X~2/α~2γ~2) corrections to separate the data with p-norm margin larger than (1 ― α) γ, where γ is the p-norm margin of the data and X is a bound on the p-norm of the instances. ALMA_p avoids quadratic (or higher-order) programming methods. It is very easy to implement and is as fast as on-line algorithms, such as Rosenblatt's perceptron. We report on some experiments comparing ALMA_p to two incremental algorithms: Perceptron and Li and Long's ROMMA. Our algorithm seems to perform quite better than both. The accuracy levels achieved by ALMA_p are slightly inferior to those obtained by Support vector Machines (SVMs). On the other hand, ALMA_p is quite faster and easier to implement than standard SVMs training algorithms.

Studies have shown that in places like New York City drivers often spend over 20 min looking for parking, contributing to as much as 30% of the total traffic. In response, cities like San Francisco have deployed systems capable of pointing drivers to the closest available parking spot. Unfortunately, such systems have gained little traction as they rely on specialized infrastructure that is expensive to build and maintain. We present SmartPark, a smartphone based system that relaxes the requirement for specialized infrastructure by relying on the smartphone's sensors and ubiquitous Wi-Fi and cellular infrastructure. To accomplish this, SmartPark addresses two major challenges, under the constraint of minimum impact on battery life: automatic transportation mode detection and location matching. Solved together, they enable SmartPark to automatically detect when a user pulls out of a parking spot, making it available again. It addresses each challenge using a combination of thorough statistical analysis of the sensor readings and a novel Random Forest based classification algorithm. Experimental results from 12 volunteers, using 7 different smartphones, in 3 different cities show that SmartPark can distinguish 9 different transportation modes with accuracy between 95.57 - 100%, enabling it to correctly detect unparking events virtually 100% of the time. This is accomplished with a minimum impact on battery life - running SmartPark on a fully charged LG Google Nexus 5 for 5 h straight caused the battery level to drop only about 4%.

Gait analysis has been considered in various scenarios to provide information about the ambulatory physical activity. In this regard, studying gait phases can provide valuable information about the quality of gait. Force myography (FMG) techniques have been successfully employed to detect gait events using pattern recognition methods. This paper explores how the accuracy of detecting gait phases is correlated with the parameters of gait and FMG signal. To this end, FMG data were collected from 11 volunteers walking on a treadmill with a custom-designed FMG ankle band. The collected FMG data were classified into four gait phases using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) algorithm. The correlation between the error in classification and the parameters of gait and FMG signal was then investigated. The results show that in comparison with other studied parameters, variations in stride length have the most impact on the accuracy of gait phase classification with a coefficient of determination (R~2) of 0.80. Such an effect is more pronounced when signal power-related features, such as root mean square (RMS), are used in the classification algorithm. This study provides insight into the factors affecting the accuracy of FMG-based techniques for gait analysis and is a preliminary step towards developing high performance FMG-based wearable ambulatory activity monitoring systems.

Many aspects have to be considered while achieving flexibility of production systems. One of them is flexible communication system that on one hand fulfils requirements of a particular industrial application and on the other hand allows integration of new network components optimally in a seamless way. In this paper, an approach to increase, rather static, Time Triggered Ethernet based systems is proposed. It is based on a greedy scheduling approach that can be implemented directly in a processing limited hardware such as IO Controller. This, together with the discovery and auto configuration mechanism proposed in [1] allows to shift the engineering process typically performed offline using engineering tool to the field level. Furthermore, it has been proven that the proposed scheduling approach is not only simple but also powerful. It is able to calculate an optimal schedule for any kind of tree graph and the complexity of the algorithm is defined by the complexity of the used sorting algorithm.

The ongoing development of various lightweight and portable EEG signal acquisition devices provides the opportunity to implement home-based epilepsy monitoring. However, it is essential to apply a highly effective method to handle the limited computational power of such devices. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective method to classify epileptic seizure using stratified sampling technique. Additionally, to reduce the required computational power, this paper proposes a novel correlation and threshold-based feature selection algorithm. For evaluating the performance of our proposed method, five different classification algorithms are applied to classify the epileptic seizure from the reduced feature set. In our experiment, the random forest classifier shows the highest accuracy compared to other classifiers.

Polarimetric techniques applied to radars on-board civil aircraft can improve the estimation of risk zones due to dangerous weather during flight. Usually, X-band weather radars are installed at the nose of civil aircrafts. This band is affected by strong attenuation in case of intense precipitation (liquid or mixed phase). The current systems do not compensate backscattered power measurements for attenuation caused by propagation through precipitation, while dual-polarization radars are able to compensate effectively this source of error and to discriminate hydrometeors. In this work, a classification algorithm based on support vector machines (SVM) is proposed. Training is driven by the output of a Fuzzy Logic (FL) classification algorithm (typical classification approach used for ground-based weather radar). SVM high performance in terms of time processing and its flexibility of configuration using all type of inputs variables are important characteristics to be included in some avionic specific equipment, such as the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB). Two datasets have been used to test the SVM classification algorithm. The first dataset is composed of simulated radar polarimetric observations at X-band and the second one is composed of actual dual-polarization radar measurements collected during the Special Observation Period (SOP) 1.1 of HYdrological cycle in MEditerranean EXperiment (Hymex) campaign by the C-band Doppler dual-polarization weather radar (Polar 55C) installed at ISAC-CNR in Rome. Good performance are obtained for SVM classificator. The comparison with FL output shows a good agreement (up to 90%) both in qualitative comparison maps by maps and using a quantitative approach which metric is based on the confusion matrix.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most frequent complication of diabetes mellitus that affects vision to the point of causing blindness. In advanced stages its progress can be delayed with laser photocoagulation which leaves behind marks on the retina. Modern screening programs rely on automatic diagnostic algorithms to detect signs of DR in patients. These systems performance may be impaired when patient retina presents marks from previous laser photocoagulation treatments. Since these patients are already being treated, it is desirable to detect and remove them from the screening program. An algorithm that automatically detects the presence of laser marks in retinal images using tree-based classifiers is proposed and the results on its performance are obtained and described. Two new public accessible datasets containing retinal images with laser marks are provided in this paper.

This paper proposes a myoelectric prosthetic hand control system using a brain machine interface that uses electromyogram signals and other biosignals such electro-encephalographic signals. The proposed system consists of a feature vector extractor, a neural network estimator, a reference trajectory generator, and an adaptive corrector. As a preparation, an experimental system has been prototyped without adaptive correction using other biosignals. The system is to classify eight forearm motions by using two electromyogram signals and to generate reference trajectories for servo controllers of a prosthetic hand. The experimental results showed that the proposed classification algorithm has basically worked well and that the reference trajectory generator has a potential to make appropriate smooth trajectories. Furthermore, electroencephalogram signals during forearm motion identification were measured and analyzed to check whether reaction to indicate any malfunctions was observed.

For a learning problem whose associated excess loss class is (β, B)-Bernstein, we show that it is theoretically possible to track the same classification performance of the best (unknown) hypothesis in our class, provided that we are free to abstain from prediction in some region of our choice. The (probabilistic) volume of this rejected region of the domain is shown to be diminishing at rate O(Bθ(1/m~1/2β), where 6 is Hanneke's disagreement coefficient. The strategy achieving this performance has computational barriers because it requires empirical error minimization in an agnostic setting. Nevertheless, we heuristically approximate this strategy and develop a novel selective classification algorithm using constrained SVMs. We show empirically that the resulting algorithm consistently outperforms the traditional rejection mechanism based on distance from decision boundary.
