In image tamper detection and recovery methods prevalently two sets of data need to be embedded into the main image, one known as authentication data for tamper detection and the other known as reference data for tamper recovery. In this paper, a scalable method for image tamper detection and recovery based on a dual-rate source-channel coding is proposed. In the proposed method the original image is first compressed by a scalable source coding algorithm. The compressed bitstream is then partitioned into two parts. Both parts are protected with a channel coding algorithm but with two different rates according to their importance for tamper recovery process. The proposed method takes advantage of two state-of-the-art algorithms, SPIRT for source coding and LDPC for channel coding. Simulation results show a noticeable improvement compared with related tamper detection and recovery schemes in the literature. Besides the reconstruction quality of the recovered image is scalable. This means that in low tampering rates, high-quality images are recovered and in high tampering rates, the image is still recoverable but with less reconstruction quality. Therefore the proposed method succeeded to both recover higher tampering rates and preserve the image quality.

The problem of broadcasting a pair of correlated Gaussian sources using optimal separate source and channel codes is studied. Considerable performance gains over previously known separate source-channel schemes are observed. Although source-channel separation yields suboptimal performance in general, it is shown that the proposed scheme is very competitive for any bandwidth compression/expansion scenarios. In particular, for a high channel SNR scenario, it can be shown to achieve optimal power-distortion tradeoff.

This paper proposes a method to optimize the performance of tandem source-channel coding with respect to the mean-squared error by exploiting the unequal error protection coding. More specifically, we formulate a combination of linear programming and grid search to optimize degree distributions for unequal error protected rateless channel codes. An asymptotic upper bound for the mean-squared error of the cascaded system is also derived. By optimizing the corresponding degree distributions of the rateless codes using unequal error protection principles, the proposed scheme has shown promising performance at high resolution region of source coding.

In this paper, we present a novel error resilient combined source-channel coding scheme suitable for mobile video applications. Several well-known methods from the areas of image and channel coding are combined to provide a system for transmitting low bit-rate video over mobile communication channels. The system is based on the use of Rate Compatible Punctured Convolutional codes that apply Unequal Error Protection to the H.263 source coder. An attempt at retaining synchronisation is made using the Error Resilient Entropy Coder to limit the propagation of bit errors in the macroblocks caused by the presence of burst errors in the mobile channel. Furthermore, the H.263 decoder has several error concealment methods to remove residual errors. Simulation results for the scheme are obtained for two QCIF sequences over Gaussian, Rayleigh and Rician channels using BPSK modulation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) appears as the standard protocol for image and video transmision. There is virtually no bandwidth limitations neither a restricted size of operating area. However, the main problem stands in the non secured transmission when ATM native applications are implemented. This induced a new way of encoding images where the redundancy (classically managed by the network protocol) is generated into the CoDec. In this paper, we present the Mojette transform that generates the redundancy at the higher level of the coder in order to safely transmit image data. Block and wavelet implementations associated with the Mojette transform are presented and compared not only from the coder point of view but for the source and the channel characteristics. For this specific case we also present the asynchronous Mojette reconstruction. An adapted object oriented model has been developped accordingly.

The method of speech coding CELP is extensively used in much voice communication-, multimedia-, video conference and other systems. There are a lot of papers related to CELP coding characteristics improvement for a better speech quality after decoding. Most of the papers are dedicated to lower the rate of CELP coded speech transmission. One problem related to low rate CELP speech transmission with a good speech decoding quality is noising in the channel for transmission. The goal of this paper is to combine the advantages and the possibilities of CELP speech coding to reduce the rate of transmission and the methods of channel coding to protect the most important CELP coding parameters in each speech frame such as line prediction coefficients, excitation indexes etc.

Underwater point cloud transmission framework: hybrid encoder implementation based on CNN and transformer

In underwater multi-robot systems, 3D point cloud data generated by sonar and depth sensors facilitates the execution of more complex collaborative tasks among robots, which partly rely on efficient data transmission. In this work, we propose a hybrid encoder framework based on convolutional neural network and Transformer for underwater point cloud transmission, aimed at dealing with large-scale point cloud data. Our encoder allows setting lower compression rate on regions or objects of interest for semantic point clouds, preserving crucial information in the point cloud. For underwater acoustic communication, we employ orthogonal frequency division multiplexing combined with deep joint source-channel coding for transmission to enhance the system's error-resilience. Compared to state-of-the-art methods in the simulation experiments, our end-to-end framework achieves considerable compression performance while eliminating certain cliff and leveling effects, also demonstrating robustness even with changing channels.

We propose to improve the packet loss resilience of scalable video coding. An algorithm for optimal coding mode selection for the base and enhancement layers is developed, which limits error propagation due to packet loss, while retaining compression efficiency. We first derive a method to estimate the overall decoder distortion, which includes the effects of quantization, packet loss and error concealment employed at the decoder. The estimate accounts for temporal and spatial error propagation due to motion compensated prediction, and computes the expected distortion precisely per pixel. The distortion estimate is incorporated within a rate-distortion framework to optimally select the coding mode as well as quantization step size for the macroblocks in each layer. Simulation results show substantial performance gains for both base and enhancement layers. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
