In this paper, we derive a maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder for the demodulate-and-forward (DF) based cooperative communication system using Alamouti space-time block code (STBC) in a distributed manner. We also propose a sub-optimal low complexity piece-wise linear (PL) decoder of the distributed Alamouti code in a DF cooperative system in which one relay out of two relays is in outage. The proposed PL decoder does not lead to any significant performance degradation and performs very close to the proposed ML decoder. Moreover, the proposed ML decoder of the DF cooperative system significantly outperforms an amplify-and-forward (AF) based cooperative system when both systems use the same data rate and distributed Alamouti STBC.

In this paper, we present an efficient turbo-coded space time block coding (STBC) schemes in block fading channels. It has been reported that proper utilization of soft decision information is one of the important factors affecting the performance of turbo codes. If a STBC scheme is used with turbo codes, the output of the STBC decoder must be fed into a turbo code decoder in the form of soft decision information. In addition, the performance of a turbo code is subject to how much diverse channel information a decoder can utilize in a codeword. In this paper we evaluate the performance of turbocoded STBC schemes over block fading channels, and present an efficient STBC scheme with very simple maximum likelihood detection capability.

In order to identify the modulation mode of STBC signal in frequency selective fading channel, an improved STBC modulation recognition algorithm based on fourth-order time delay moment is proposed in the condition of single receiving antenna. This algorithm calculates the fourth-order delay moment of spacetime block code at the receiving end, and uses threshold detection method to compare the estimated value of fourth-order delay moment with the threshold interval of theoretical value, and automatically identifies the modulation mode of signal. Simulation results show that the algorithm is not affected by adverse factors such as frequency deviation and phase jitter, and there is little difference between different STBC recognition effects.

We propose the use of a distributed differential space-time code within a two-hop cooperative wireless four relay network, with partial channel information at the destination, over quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels, which can achieve full cooperative diversity and improve the transmission rate to approximately unit. In this scheme the four relay nodes are arranged as two groups of two relay nodes, both of which employ the distributed differential space time block coding design, but with offset transmission scheduling. Therefore, the source can serially transmit data to the destination and the overall rate can be improved. However, this transmission scheme may suffer from inter-relay interference which is caused by the simultaneous transmission of the source and another group of relays. A full interference cancellation (FIC) approach is therefore used to remove the inter-relay interference. Uncoded and coded bit error rate simulations confirm the utility of the scheme.

space-time block codes based on complex orthogonal design (COD) have been widely investigated for their attractive performance. Adams et al. constructed a class of balanced complex orthogonal designs (BCODs) which have rate 1/2 and decoding delay 2 m when n = 2m-1 or 2m. Comparing with the maximum rate CODs, the growth of decoding delay of BCODs is decreased from factorial order (2m:m+1) to exponential order 2 m , while the rate is decreased from (m+1)/2m to 1/2. In this paper, we focus on the study of the structure of BCODs. In order to keep the symmetric structure unchanged, we impose restrictions on the equivalence operations. Then by using the restricted narrow equivalence operations, we construct four submatrixes sequences for any BCOD, and then prove that all of these submatrixes have some symmetric characteristics in common. Based on those symmetric characteristics, we immediately define a standard form for BCODs. And finally we reach the conclusion that, for any BCOD, we can make it into another standard form BCOD under equivalence operations.

Clustered DFT-S-OFDM has been accepted as the uplink multiple access scheme for LTE-Advanced. In this paper, a new transmit diversity with four transmit antennas is proposed for Clustered DFT-S-OFDM system. A modified Frequency Switched Transmit Diversity (FSTD) algorithm is proposed, where the multiple clusters can be divided into two groups by four antennas, thus the number of clusters on each antenna will be reduced. As a result, the PAPR performance of each antenna has been improved. Meanwhile, in order to obtain additional frequency diversity gain, the proposed scheme has introduced more channels by a symbol-based dynamic cluster allocation method, which makes one turbo coded stream transmitted multiple channels. Moreover, the space-time block coding (STBC) is employed for the two antennas in each group to achieve spatial diversity and coding gain. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has good PAPR and Bit block Error Rate (BLER) performance on frequency selective MIMO channels.

We consider an asynchronous two-way relay network, in which two double-antenna relays assist in the communication between two single-antenna terminals through analog network coding. The asynchronous transmission between relays and terminals causes symbol misalignments and results in diversity loss in space-time block code (STBC). We propose a zero-padded time-reversal quasi-orthogonal STBC that can achieve full diversity with low-complexity maximum likelihood (ML) decoding, given a bounded delay. With ML decoding, the proposed code is decomposed into several independent parts, which leads to single complex symbol decoding. Proof of full diversity is established, and the decoding complexity order is analyzed for the proposed design. Simulations confirm the full diversity gain. The bit error rate performance in asynchronous scenarios is almost the same as that in synchronous scenarios.

In this paper we develop space-time block codes for unique word - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UW-OFDM) systems to fully exploit the diversity gain when the channel state information is not available at the transmitter. To this end, we propose two novel space-time block codes (STBCs) for UW-OFDM systems, namely a frequency domain space-time block code and a time-reversal space-time code (TR-STC). The former one is an extension of the traditional space-frequency block codes (SFBCs) for CP-OFDM systems to UW-OFDM systems while the latter one makes use of the frame structure of the UW-OFDM symbols and has a low complexity decoder. Simulation results show that both of the proposed space-time block codes achieve a significant gain compared to the SFBC based CP-OFDM. Moreover, the frequency domain STBC yields a slightly better performance as compared to the TR-STC but has a higher computational complexity.

In this paper, we propose to reduce the complexity of both the Approx-Log-MAP algorithm as well as of the Max-Log-MAP algorithm, which were designed for soft-decision-aided space-time block Code (STBC) detectors. First of all, we review the STBC design, which enables regular L-PSK/QAM detectors to be invoked in order to detect STBCs on a symbol-by-symbol basis. Secondly, we propose to operate the L-PSK/QAM aided STBC detection on a bit-by-bit basis, so that the complexity may be reduced from the order of O(L) to O(BPS = log_2 L). Our simulation results demonstrate that a near-capacity performance may be achieved by the proposed detectors at a substantially reduced detection complexity. For example, a factor six complexity reduction was achieved by the proposed algorithms, when they were invoked for detecting Alamouti's Square 16QAM aided G2 scheme.

In this paper, we study the problem of one bit imperfect feedback based diagonal precoding for Alamouti space-time block code in a 2 × 1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system. The communication links are assumed to be Nakagami-m distributed. An accurate bit error rate (BER) expression of the considered MISO system is derived with erroneous feedback by using the order statistics. The average BER of the precoding scheme is minimized to find the optimized transmit weights. Further, we also derive the Shannon capacity of the scheme by using the moment generating function approach. Simulated and analytical results show that a significant capacity gain is achieved by the considered scheme as compared to the uniform power allocation over the Nakagami-m fading channels.
