We analyze the performance of a dual-hop relay system with correlated antennas at the source and the destination. Orthogonal space time block coding (OSTBC) is employed at the source. Single-antenna relays with and without direct transmission between the source and the destination are studied. Assuming non-identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels, closed-form expressions of outage probability, average symbol error rate (SER), and moment generating function (MGF) of the instantaneous end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived for the single-relay case. Asymptotic analysis is also performed to obtain the diversity order for the single-relay system. Furthermore, the analysis is extended to obtain expressions for the outage probability and SER for multiple-relay systems. Analytical results are validated with Monte-Carlo simulations using Mathematica and MATLAB programs.

This paper proposes a novel and efficient algorithm for space-time block code (STBC) classification, when a single antenna is employed at the receiver. The algorithm exploits the discriminating features provided by the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of the fourth-order lag products (FOLPs) of the received signal. It does not require estimation of the channel, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and modulation of the transmitted signal, Computer simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The results show the validity of the algorithm, its robustness to carrier frequency offset, and low sensitivity to timing offset.

Conventional uni-polarized multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna systems offer the advantages of higher data rate and higher reliability through the use of spatial multiplexing and space-time coding, respectively. However, the cost and space constraints have led to the use of dual-polarized MIMO antenna systems where two spatially separated uni-polarized antennas are replaced by a single antenna element employing orthogonal polarizations, thereby exploiting polarization diversity. The advantages of dual polarized antennas can be further exploited by the use of precoding at the transmitter which leads to reduced complexity at the receiver for downlink communications, when compared to the conventional multi-user detectors. In this paper, we propose a singular value decomposition based precoding-aided dual-polarized MIMO system and compare its performance with the conventional minimum mean square error (MMSE) based approach for mitigating co-channel interference in a multi-cell environment consisting of flat Rayleigh fading channels. Our performance results reveal that the precoding-aided dual-polarized MIMO system outperforms the conventional MMSE detection scheme and offers appreciable gain in symbol energy-to-noise ratio performance.

This paper investigates the use of opportunistic space time codes with a decode and forward protocol in cooperative networks. CRC code is applied on the message at the source. At each relay, only the correctly received message block is retransmitted. We demonstrate that this cooperative protocol prevents propagation of error and optimizes the diversity order depending on the channel status and available transmit power.

Owing to the forever growing demand for faster data transmission speed in the recent or future telecommunication systems, the multiple antenna systems have been actively investigated and successfully deployed for the emerging broadband wireless access networks (e.g., Mobile WiMAX). Even when a wireless channel with high channel capacity is known, we still require to find superior techniques to achieve high speed data transmission or high reliability. Multiple antenna techniques can be broadly classified into two categories: diversity techniques and spatial-multiplexing techniques. The diversity techniques intend to receive the same information-bearing signals in the multiple antennas or to transmit them from multiple antennas, in so doing improving the transmission consistency. Diversity techniques are used to mitigate degradation in the error performance due to unstable wireless fading channels, for example, subject to the multipath fading etc. A basic idea of the diversity techniques is to convert Rayleigh fading wireless channel into more stable AWGN-like channel without any catastrophic signal fading. When the spatial-multiplexing Techniques are used, the maximum achievable transmission speed can be the same as the capacity of the MIMO channel;however, when the diversity techniques are used, the achievable transmission speed can be much lower than the capacity of the MIMO channel. Spatially multiplexed MIMO (SM-MIMO) systems can transmit data at a higher speed than MIMO systems using antenna diversity. However, spatial demultiplexing or signal detection at the receiver side is a challenging task for SM MIMO systems. This paper addresses the signal detection technique using maximum likelihood detection for SM MIMO systems.

The cooperative MIMO (CMIMO) technology having characteristics of low energy expended and high reliability can be very well suited to resource-constrained event-driven wireless sensor networks (WSNs), in which collecting date is unpredictable for space and time. A novel energy-efficient STBC-based CMIMO transmission scheme is put forward for event-driven WSNs in this letter, which adopts cross-layer design and dynamic event cluster. Detailed energy models are developed to maximize energy saving by the joint optimization for the number of cooperative nodes and constellation size. Through computer simulation, It can be found that the novel transmission scheme saves more energy in comparison with the traditional transmission protocol.

Several new multi-carrier transmission techniques such as Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC), Universal Filtered Multi-Carrier (UFMC), and Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) are being proposed as alternatives to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for future wireless communication systems. Since multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) will be an integral part of the 5th Generation (5G) cellular systems, the performance of these new schemes needs to be investigated for MIMO system. space-time block codes (STBC) are widely used in MIMO system because of their ability to achieve full diversity and the simple linear processing at the receiver. In this work, we propose different approaches for the application of STBCs in UFMC. These approaches are based on type of receive filtering used for UFMC. Moreover, we also investigate the performance of these proposed schemes over frequency selective environments, and compare it with the performance of the other non-orthogonal techniques mentioned above.

In this paper, we propose a modified successive interference cancellation algorithm and its performance is evaluated considering hybrid diversity/spatial multiplexing multiple input multiple output (MIMO) schemes. As consequence of this modification, the diversity layer of hybrid schemes is now able to achieve the full diversity and thereby improves performance considering bit error rate, while offering greater efficiency in bits per channel use (pcu) when compared with traditional space-time block code (STBC) using the same number of transmit antennas.

We present a new means of implementing distributed space-time block codes (STBC) for wireless amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks. In the proposed method, each source antenna transmits one column of an STBC matrix derived from a generalized complex orthogonal design (GCOD). Such designs were originally intended for single hop environments. At each relay antenna, a precoding matrix and a fixed gain amplification factor are applied before the resulting signal is forwarded to the next set of nodes. The precoding operation at the relays rearranges the elements of the received vector in such a way that the equivalent STBC code observed at the destination is quasi-orthogonal. The characteristics and one structure for the precoding matrices are proposed. Initially, a dual hop system is considered for convenience. We then demonstrate how the scheme can be readily extended to multihop networks. We refer to this type of relay system as the transform-and-forward scheme. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the technique over an existing approach.

In this paper, a blind channel estimator, which is based on linear non-redundant precoding and second-order statistics, is proposed for space time block (STBC) coded MIMO-OFDM systems. According to the complex orthogonal properties of the STBCs, the channel estimate with a scalar ambiguity can be obtained through a series of simple linear transformation. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can track the time-varying channel state well and thus improve the system performance when the number of the statistical data is properly chosen.
