Simply decoded efficient full-rate space-time block codes over correlated Rician fading channels

A novel technique is presented to design efficient full-rate space-time block codes (STBCs) over correlated Rician fading channels. The authors first derive a formula for the achievable information rate of a linear dispersion coded multi-input single-output system as a function of correlation at the transmitter in a Rician fading channel. In addition, the authors obtain the bit-error-rate (BER) equations for this system, when multiple phase shift keying and multiple quadrature amplitude modulation schemes are used at the transmitter. Therefore with regard to derived formulae and using a genetic algorithm, a method is presented to construct STBCs over correlated Rician fading channels. The efficient designed STBCs for two and four transmit antennas enjoy full-rate, simple structure, simple processing at the receiver, better BER performance than associated orthogonal STBCs at practical signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and higher achievable information rate than them at all SNRs.

Incremental relaying cooperative networks with dual transmit diversity

This paper studies the performance of cooperative wireless networks using incremental relaying and dual transmit diversity with the simple orthogonal space time block coding (OSTBC) scheme. The proposed model is studied by utilizing different relaying schemes including decode and forward (DF), amplify and forward (AF), and adaptive incremental relaying (i.e., best relay selection) with DF relaying. In particular, upper-bounded expressions are derived for the averagebit error rate (BER), signal to noise ratio (SNR) outage probability, average achievable rate, and normalized throughput. Detailed results show that the dual transmit diversity approach outperforms the regular incremental relaying cooperative diversity scheme in terms of transmission power and channel efficiency for the same transmit power. Moreover, best relay selection with multiple relaying nodes outperforms fixed incremental DF relaying, especially for lower transmitted SNR values. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Capacity and error probability analysis for orthogonal space-time block codes over correlated Rayleigh and Rician fading channels

In this paper, the capacity and error probability of orthogonal space-time block codes (STBCs) are presented for PAM/PSK/QAM modulation in correlated flat fading channels. We consider an equivalent scalar AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) channel with a channel gain proportional to the Frobenius norm of the matrix channel. A unified approach to the error probability analysis for correlated Rayleigh and Rician fading channels is presented. Closed form error probability expressions are derived for Rayleigh fading channels. We also determine the capacity and probability of error for a multiuser direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system employing a STBC over correlated fading channels.

space-time coding with receive combiner bank (STC-RCB), in which a bank of receive combiners is added before the space-time decoder for interference-plus-noise suppression, is proposed. Without loss of generality, the author consider space-time block code (STBC) to be the representative of STC and study the performance for (STBC-RCB). The author derive the output signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) (of the space-time decoder) for STBC-RCB under multi-user cochannel interference. By regarding STBC as a special case of STBC-RCB, the author also derive the output SINR for STBC under multi-user cochannel interference. Simulation results show that the output SINR of STBC-RCB can be much larger than that of STBC, also, they show that STBC-RCB can adopt the appropriate receive combining strategy in the RCB to further improve the performance.

Feedback-based multi-layered STBC system for MIMO multi-cellular networks with cochannel interference

A feedback-based multi-layered STBC (MLSTBC) system, which is adapted to cochannel interference, is proposed. This system can adjust its transmitter configuration so that the largest throughput for the given SINR is obtained, also, it can use joint beamforming and power control to minimize cochannel interference so that the throughput requirement is satisfied. We propose an iterative algorithm to realize joint beamforming and power control for the feedback-based MLSTBC system, and in this algorithm, we derive the required SINR and the corresponding transmitter configuration for attaining the throughput requirement. Some properties and simulation results are presented, they show that the proposed algorithm helps the feedback-based MLSTBC system increase the probability of the success in meeting the throughput requirement, also they show that the feedback-based MLSTBC system results in larger throughput than MLSTBC (with fixed transmitter configuration), STBC, and V-BLAST. Optimising quasi-orthogonal STBC through group-constrained linear transformation

The generic algebraic structure of a quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QO-STBC) has been derived, and group-constrained linear transformation (GCLT) as a mean to optimise the diversity and coding gains of a QO-STBC with square or rectangular QAM constellations has been proposed. Compared with QO-STBC with constellation rotation (CR), QO-STBC with GCLT requires only half the number of symbols for joint detection, hence lower maximum-likelihood decoding complexity. The optimum GCLT parameters for QO-STBC with square QAM constellation have been derived analytically. The optimised QO-STBCs with GCLT are able to achieve full-transmit diversity and have negligible performance loss compared with QO-STBCs with CR at the same code rate.

GA based adaptive receiver for MC-CDMA system

Multicarrier systems like the multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems are designed for maximum usability of available bandwidth. We use the MC-CDMA system with Alamouti's space time coding in this paper. We propose the genetic algorithm (GA) in order to calculate MC-CDMA receiver weights with two variation schemes. The proposed schemes reduce receiver complexity. The bit error rate and convergence rate are also improved by increasing the number of genes and chromosomes of the GA in both schemes as compared with conventional LMS based receivers of the MC-CDMA system. This is verified via simulations.

Tap-constrained constant modulus algorithm for the blind equalisation of time-reversal-based STBCs through the exploitation of algebraic properties

A tap-constrained constant modulus algorithm is proposed for the blind equalisation of a time-reversal-based space-time block-coded (STBC) transmission. The tap constraint has been developed by exploiting certain algebraic properties of STBC, and this constraint avoids the problem of repeated retrieval of identical sources found in the conventional constant modulus algorithms. The bit-error-rate performance of the proposed blind detection algorithm is shown to be very close to that of a pilot-based Viterbi equaliser.

Relay transmit power allocation for distributed-space-time block code cognitive small cell networks

Small cell networks enhance spectrum efficiency by handling the indoor traffic of mobile networks on a frequency-reuse operation. Since most of the current mobile traffic happen in indoor, the authors introduce a prioritisation shift by imposing a limitation on the outage generated by the outdoor mobile system to the indoor small cells. The prioritisation shift consists of setting an outage probability threshold limitation on the macrocell system which is classically considered as a primary system. In this study, they consider downlink spectrum sharing between a system consisting of small cells and a macrocell with relays. The relays constitute a distributed-space-time block code (STBC) relaying for the outdoor system terminals. New closed-form expressions are derived to validate the proposed bit error rate (BER) function used in their optimisation algorithm considering STBC with unequal branch SNR. They propose a joint transmit antenna selection and power allocation which minimises the proposed BER. The proposed optimisation yields a dynamic selection of the relays with power control pertaining to the outdoor mobile terminal performance. The simulation results show that their proposal exhibits a better BER compared with the conventional Alamouti STBC with equal power allocation.

Channel estimation for chip-level Alamouti coded multi-rate CDMA: blind subspace algorithms and performance analysis

In this work we consider the problem of blind channel estimation for the downlink of a variable spreading gain (VSG) muiti-rate code-division-multiple-access (MR CDMA) system which uses the orthogonal space-time block coding (STBC) proposed by Alamouti. In contrast to traditional symbol-level STBC CDMA systems, we consider a chip-level ST block coding system for which we derive a simple subspace-based blind channel estimation method. For the derived algorithm we investigate the necessary and sufficient conditions for the channel to be uniquely identifiable up to a complex multiplicative constant. We also analyse the behaviour of the channel estimation algorithm as a function of the data samples utilised, establishing its unbiasedness and providing a closed-form expression for the mean-square-error (MSE) as well as the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for the channel estimation performance.
