Performance Analysis of Distributed Transmission Schemes in Cooperative Random Networks

In this paper, two distributed transmission schemes, namely Distributed Transmitter Maximal Ratio Combining (D-TxMRC) and Distributed space time block coding (D-STBC) are analysed. The array and diversity gain inherent to the underlying Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technique are studied, both under independent and correlated fading scenario. It is shown that D-TxMRC is capable of achieving high array gain at the expense of complexity, while only limited array gain is attained using D-STBC scheme. As far as diversity gain is concerned, both schemes achieve full diversity in the order of total number of cooperating nodes under independent fading. The overall performance of the schemes under random network scenario is analysed using average outage probability as a performance metric. The averaging encompasses channel variation as well as network dependent parameters. Effects of different network parameters towards system performance are also analysed. Finally, the performance of cooperative schemes in a more practical network with regular node placements are also studied.

Sub-optimum detection scheme for asynchronous cooperative relay networks

In this study, a new sub-optimum detection scheme is proposed which employs closed-loop extended orthogonal space-time block coding and outer convolutive coding within an asynchronous cooperative wireless relay network to achieve full data rate and full diversity gain between the relays and destination node together with coding gain. Simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme can effectively suppress intersymbol interference induced by asynchronism between the relay nodes at the destination node.

Theoretical performance analysis of single and multiple antenna BFWA systems

The systems under investigation are broadband fixed wireless access (BFWA) systems operating in multipath fading channels. Conventional detection methods, for example, coherent detection for single-input single-output systems and the Alamouti algorithm for multiple-input multiple-output systems are examined theoretically and shown to yield unsatisfactory performance. The theoretical analyses are validated by Monte-Carlo simulations and are demonstrated to be accurate. The asymptotic performance of the space-time block coded (STBC) system with theAlamouti transmission scheme is also evaluated. However, the results indicate that the performance lower bound cannot be obtained in an uncoded system due to the error propagation problem, which can be tackled by concatenating the STBC system with an outer channel code and applying the turbo processing principle. Theoretical performance analysis provides an insight into the physical limitations imposed by BFWA channels and suggest solutions to improve the capacity and performance of future BFWA systems.

STBC MC-CDMA systems:: comparison of MMSE single-user and multiple-user detection schemes over Rayleigh and MIMO METRA channels

The performance of MMSE single-user detection (SD) and multi-user detection (MD) STBC multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems are analysed and compared in the case of two transmit antennas and one or two receive antennas over Rayleigh fading channels and then over the stochastic multiple input multiple output (MIMO) METRA channel model. With two transmit and one receive antennas, MD achieves a gain of roughly I dB for non-full load systems while the same performance is obtained with MD and SD for full load systems. Besides, with two receive antennas, we present a suboptimal and an optimal MMSE SD MIMO MC-CDMA schemes, this last one offering a very good performance. Finally, the very good behaviour of MMSE space-time block coding (STBC) MC-CDMA systems is confirmed over the realistic multi element transmit receive antennas (METRA) MIMO channel. High-rate full-diversity space-time block codes for three and four transmit antennas

The authors deal with the design of high-rate, full-diversity, low-maximum likelihood (ML) decoding complexity space-time block codes (STBCs) with code rates of 2 and 1.5 complex symbols per channel use for multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems employing three and four transmit antennas. The authors fill the empty slots of the existing STBCs from coordinate interleaved orthogonal designs (CIODs) in their transmission matrices by additional symbols and use the conditional ML decoding technique, which significantly reduces the ML decoding complexity of non-orthogonal STBCs while ensuring full-diversity and high coding gain. First, two new schemes with code rates of 2 and 1.5 are proposed for MIMO systems with four transmit antennas. The authors show that our low-complexity rate-2 STBC outperforms the corresponding best STBC recently proposed by Biglieri et al. (2008) for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), due to its superior coding gain while our rate-1.5 STBC outperforms the full-diversity quasi-orthogonal STBC (QOSTBC). Then, two STBCs with code rates of 2 and 1.5 are proposed for three transmit antennas, which are shown to outperform the corresponding full-diversity QOSTBC. The authors prove by an information-theoretic analysis that the capacities of new rate-2 STBCs for three and four transmit antennas are much closer to the actual MIMO channel capacity than the capacities of classical OSTBCs and CIODs.

Blind multiuser detection of STBC signals using hybrid constant modulus and subspace methods

A blind multi-user detection algorithm for space-time block coded (STBC) signals is proposed based upon subspace methods and constant modulus algorithms for multiple antenna based receivers. The subspace method is used to determine blindly the multiuser detector required for the mitigation of multi-user interference and to coherently combine multipath and multiple receive antenna signals. It is shown that this subspace method for STBC could however, solve this problem only up to a matrix ambiguity and the structure of this ambiguity matrix looks like a channel matrix obtained for a Single user STBC system with frequency non-selective channel. Hence, the remaining problem is shown to be equivalent to blind equalisation of a single user STBC in flat fading channels. A tap constrained constant modulus algorithm is proposed to solve the remaining problem. In this blind method, only the signature waveform of the user of interest is assumed to be known, and the signature waveforms of all other users in addition to the channel impulse responses of all the users are assumed to be unknown. Simulation results confirm Superior performance of the proposed method over conventional non-blind matched filters.

Visible Light Communication System Employing space time Coded Relay Nodes and Imaging Receivers

In this paper, authors propose a VLC system, whose source of information is assumed to be a power line, and employs a combination of relaying and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. Precisely, the performance of a VLC system, with relay nodes equipped with a MIMO technique called space time block coding (STBC), is investigated. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the Alamouti coding (AC) scheme, which is a type of STBC, is specifically considered. In order to enhance the overall system reliability, we propose to use an imaging receiver (ImR), in conjunction with the relay-MIMO setup. In comparison to when a nonimaging receiver (NImR) is employed, an improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 7 dB is observed when an ImR with a specific number of pixels, is used, hence, improving the BER. We also investigate and show that the selected number of pixels and receiver location have an effect on the system BER. SNR values of 9 dB, 11 dB and 15 dB were required to maintain a BER of 10(-4) for imaging receivers with 70, 50 and 20 pixels, respectively.

Orthogonal STBC for MDL Mitigation in Mode Division Multiplexing System With MMSE Channel Estimation

Mode division multiplexing (MDM) has the potential of increasing the capacity of optical fiber transmission system. However, primary impaired factor mode-dependent loss (MDL) poses fundamental performance limitations. Recently MIMO space time coding technique has provided a potential solution to mitigate the MDL and hence started receiving considerable interests. In this paper, orthogonal space time block coding (OSTBC)-based MDM transmission system was investigated to test its efficiency in mitigating MDL. Considering the importance and necessity of channel estimation for coherent receivers and the paucity of literature on this subject, MMSE channel estimation process was introduced in the MDM system to test the robustness and efficiency of the OSTBC-MDM system in mitigating the MDL. Furthermore, an alternative linear decoding (LD) method was achieved by transferring the orthogonal characteristics of codes in OSTBC to the channel elements in MDM system. The LD method has the same performance as the optimal ML method, excepting that it only exhibits linear computational complexity, in terms of the number of modes and the size of constellations. Simulation results were provided to validate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed OSTBC-MDM system in mitigating the MDL in the presence of MMSE channel estimation.

Cooperative space-time block coded full-duplex relaying over frequency-selective channel

In this study, the authors investigate a distributed time-reversal space-time block coded (D-TR-STBC) system with amplify-and-forward full duplex relaying (FDR) over frequency-selective channel. In the first, they present an FDR to use in a cooperative D-STBC relaying in which a relay transmits the delayed signal as much as one frame in order to maintain the orthogonal property of STBC at the destination. Then, they briefly present the conventional full self-interference cancellation (SIC) which continuously removes the self-interference signal. As an alternative to the full SIC, they further introduce a partial SIC that periodically performs the SIC process. As a result, it can reduce cancellation processing by a half time compared to the full SIC. In the second, they propose the efficient and yet optimal destination structure consisting of the forward interference cancellation (IC), backward IC and joint equalisation and data combining in order to obtain a full coding gain. It is shown that the proposed D-TR-STBC-FDR system has similar to 3 dB signal-to-noise ratio gain compared to cooperative half-duplex relaying with D-TR-STBC while it has the same diversity order. In addition, they show that there are no performance losses between FDR with full SIC and FDR with partial SIC.
