Asymmetric space vector pulse width modulation for the Phase Current Reconstruction in Three-Phase Inverters

The dc bus single current sensor technique (SCST) has attracted widespread attention in the motor drive system because it reduces cost and volume. However, when dc bus SCST is used with the conventional space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) strategy, the current reconstruction of the unobservable area in the sector boundary and low modulation area will degrade the accuracy of sampling data. This article proposes a novel asymmetric SVPWM (ASVPWM) method for three-phase two-level voltage source inverters, characterized by low computational overhead, accurate current reconstruction, and a constant sampling frequency. The ASVPWM is applied to achieve complete current reconstruction by randomly shifting the switching state pulses of the inverter in the unobservable area. Moreover, the conventional SVPWM is utilized for the proposed method to reduce the current harmonic content in the observable area. The effectiveness of the ASVPWM method was verified by experimental results obtained from a permanent-magnet synchronous motor. It has been demonstrated that by using ASVPWM, the three-phase current signals can be reconstructed while providing low current harmonic distortion (4.60%).

This article proposes a modulating and carrier-based dodecagonal space vector pulse width modulation (DSV-PWM) technique for split-phase open-end induction motor (OEIM). The advantage of the DSV-PWM technique is that the fifth and seventh order (6n +/- 1;n=1,3,5,...) harmonics are eliminated from the phase voltage of the split-phase OEIM. The modulating waveform is generated from the sinusoidal reference signals by adding the triplen, and fifth and seventh order harmonics. This modified reference waveform is compared to the triangular carrier waveform to generate the PWM gating signals for inverter-1 so that the vector addition from two inverters results in a 12-sided polygonal space vector structure for the PWM control. The PWM signals for the two-level inverter-2 connected to the other end of the OEIM are produced by performing a small logical operation using the PWM signals of inverter-1. The dc voltage relation between inverter-1 and inverter-2 is 1:0.366. The timing duration for inverter-1 and inverter-2 is the same to generate the dodecagonal space vector structure (DSVS) and can be easily implemented as in the case of a conventional sine-triangle PWM technique in a three-phase drive. So, mapping the space vectors of the DSVS of conventional split-phase to that of the OEIM drive is simple. This can be achieved using a logical operator like xor. Thus, the computation burden of the digital signal processors to produce the DSV-PWM signals is reduced with the proposed algorithm which is 3.45 times than the conventional space vector-based implementation using sector identification, vector time computation, and storing the switching vectors. A detailed analysis of the modulating waveform and DSV-PWM signal generation with the experimental verification of the proposed drive is presented in this article.

This paper propose a novel space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) to achieve fault tolerance (FT) under line-to-line (LL) short-circuit (SC) conditions for three-phase four-leg (3P4L) inverter. The primary objective of the proposed method is to maintain normal voltage supply to the all phases while ensuring that zero voltage is applied to the faulted line during an LL fault. To achieve this, a new coordinate transformation method is introduced to accurately extract the magnitude of unbalanced three-phase voltages. The proposed coordinate transformation handles a three-dimensional (3-D) plane under LL fault, enabling conversion to a two-dimensional (2-D) plane via transformation along the gamma - axis. This transformation remains effective even under LL fault, ensuring reliable voltage magnitude detection and control through the synchronous reference frame (SRF) transformation. Additionally, an SVPWM switching strategy tailored for fault conditions is developed. By analyzing the 3P4L inverter's switching vector diagram, a specific combination of switching vectors is proposed to apply zero voltage to the faulted line. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated through experimental results from a 30 kW-class 3P4L inverter.

Common-mode voltage (CMV) generated by the inverter causes motor bearing failures in multiphase drives. On the other hand, presence of undesired z-component currents in six-phase induction machine (SPIM) leads to extra current losses and have to be considered in pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques. In this paper, it is shown that the presence of z-component currents and CMV in six phase drive system are two major limiting factors in space vector selection. The calculated voltage space vectors for both symmetrical and asymmetrical SPIM drive system with three-level inverter are illustrated in the decoupled subspaces and described in terms of undesirable voltage components and CMV value. Several space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) techniques are investigated based on CMV and z-component currents generation. Then, a modified SVPWM technique with minimum current distortion, undesired current components and CMV with a modest torque ripple is proposed based on the simulation results.

The paper propose a novel space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) for two stage two-phase matrix converter with four legs fed two-phase induction motor (TPIM). Proposed control technique reduce number of switching, switching losses and therefore increase efficiency. Comparison of simulated and measured stator currents THD and efficiency comparison of two stage matrix converter controlled by SVPWM and PWM is also presented.

pulse width modulation (PWM) driven power converters are widely used in realizing the function of rectification and inversion in renewable and emerging power applications. They play a key role in tying renewable energy sources of solar and wind to conventional energy grid systems. Such emergying styles of power systems are referred to as Distributed Generation (DG) or energy mix. The PWM-based switching devices are also sources for injecting harmonics to degrade the quality level in this emerging style of DG systems causing steady-state waveform distortion. Thus power converters operated by finely tuned PWM play an important role in mitigating the voltage waveform distorting harmonics and consequently improving the stability of the system. This paper presents the mitigation of harmonic contents by reproducing as a novel space vector-based switching pattern of SVPWM. In this work, the proposed switching pattern will have a DC link RMS current equal to or less than that of a conventional SVPWM current under the same switching frequency (SF), load, L-C filter, DC bus voltage, and modulation Index (MI). The results include a 13.43% improvement in Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) at relatively high modulation indices. The Weighted Total Harmonic Distortion (WTHD) has also improved by 47.37% and the number of thyristors has been reduced lowering switching losses. The Matlab-Simulink simulation results have been experimentally verified with an Advanced Digital Analog Learning Module (ADALM M2k)-based experimental setup, improving the proposed SVPWM THD by 13.49%. The conventional and proposed SVPWM performance comparison is done by obtaining Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) by driving a two-level three-phase voltage source inverter.

In addressing the issue of high common-mode voltage amplitude and output waveform distortion caused by low switching frequency in medium and high-voltage high-power variable frequency speed control systems, the neutral-point clamped three-level inverter is taken as the research object, from the perspective of switching sequence design, a detailed analysis of the switching sequence design method to mitigate the common-mode voltage amplitude, minimize the switching times and enhance output waveform quality. An improved synchronous space vector pulse width modulation strategy is proposed. Secondly, the improved strategy is applied to the closed-loop control of permanent magnet synchronous motor. Aiming at the defects of single modulation mode, the multi-mode modulation strategy based on the improved strategy is proposed, and the smooth switching of modulation mode is realized by limiting the switching phase. The compensation schemes for angular deviation under synchronous modulation and angular delay under digital control are studied to improve the system's stability. Finally, a simulation and experimental platform is built to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the improved and multi-mode modulation strategies.

In order to better address the problem of many high-order harmonics' concentration in the output voltage, a novel five-phase piecewise-random-switching-frequency space vector pulse width modulation (PRSF-SVPWM) strategy is proposed for a five-phase voltage source inverter. Compared to the conventional random switching frequency SVPWM (RSF-SVPWM), the entire fundamental period of this method is divided into two half-fundamental periods, so the original switching frequency in a single fundamental period is randomized in segments respectively. During this process, parameters named the offset frequency and random frequency are defined and assigned reasonably. In this way, high-frequency harmonics in one period are spread into a wider range. Subsequent simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed random modulation strategy can further reduce amplitudes of harmonics near switching frequency and its integer multiples, even though within a narrow switching frequency range, and a satisfactory effect of high-order harmonic dispersion is finally obtained, which contributes to the application and popularization of random pulse width modulation strategies.

Three-level saddle space vector pulse width modulation strategy based on two-level space vector pulse width modulation for neutral-point-clamped three-level inverters

This study proposes a three-level saddle space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) strategy based on two-level SVPWM (TBT_SAPWM) for neutral-point-clamped (NPC) three-level inverters. According to the analysis of the conventional three-level SVPWM strategy based on two-level SVPWM (CTBT_SVPWM) and the proposed TBT_SAPWM strategy, the modulation wave expressions of the two strategies are derived. Compared to the CTBT_SVPWM strategy, each main sector has its own independent area, and determining the main sectors or regions becomes easier with the proposed TBT_SAPWM strategy. Moreover, by optimising the switching states, the proposed TBT_SAPWM strategy makes on-state duration of one selected phase equal to that of the other selected phases in a switching cycle. Therefore, the three-phase modulation waves are saddle waves at the full range of fundamental wave modulation ratios. According to the experimental results in this study, the proposed TBT_SAPWM strategy has better performances in terms of the output harmonics and the neutral-point voltage ripple, compared to the CTBT_SVPWM strategy. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy are verified by the experimental platform of an NPC three-level inverter based on the digital signal processor and complex programmable logic device.
