A novel wavelet packet image coder is introduced in this paper. It is based on our previous work on wavelet image coding using space-frequency. quantization (SFQ),(1) in which zerotree quantization and scalar quantization are jointly optimized in a rate-distortion sense. In this paper, we extend the powerful SFQ coding paradigm from the wavelet transform to the more general wavelet packet transformation.(2) The resulting wavelet packet coder offers a universal transform coding framework within the constraints of filter bank structures by allowing joint transform and quantizer design without assuming a priori statistics of the input image. In other words, the new coder adaptively chooses the representation to suit the image and the quantization to suit the representation. Experimental results show that, for some image classes, our new coder is capable of achieving the best coding performances among those in the published literature (e.g. for the standard 512 x 512 Barbara image coded at 0.5 b/p, our wavelet packet coder gets a 1.26 dB gain in PSNR over the SFQ coder(1) and 2.06 dB over Shaprio's embedded zerotree wavelet coder(3)).

Wavelet image coding using trellis coded space-frequency quantization

Recent progresses in wavelet image coding have brought the field into its maturity, Major developments in the process are rate-distortion (R-D) based wavelet packet transformation, zerotree quantization, subband classification and trellis-coded quantization, and sophisticated context modeling in entropy coding, Drawing from past experience and recent insights, we propose a new wavelet image coding technique with trellis coded space-frequency quantization (TCSFQ). TCSFQ aims to explore space-frequency characterizations of wavelet image representations via R-D optimized zerotree pruning, trellis-coded quantization, and context modeling in entropy coding. Experiments indicate that the TCSFQ coder achieves twice as much compression as the baseline JPEG coder does at the same peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), making it better than all other coders described in the literature [1].

Progressive trellis-coded space-frequency quantization for wavelet image coding

This paper addresses progressive wavelet image coding within the trellis-coded space-frequency quantization (TCSFQ) framework [1]. A method similar to that in [2] is used to approximately invert TCSFQ when decoding at rates lower than the encoding rate. Our experiments show that the loss incurred for progressive transmission is within I dB in peak signal-to-noise ratio and that the progressive coding performance of TCSFQ is competitive with that of the celebrated SPIHT coder [3] at all rates.

Efficient coding for dynamic 3-D mesh with vertices structuring and connectivity-oriented multiresolution decomposition

In this paper, we propose a new coding method for dynamic 3-D polygonal meshes with invariant connectivity between frames. This coding method is based on a wavelet transform in time domain and a multiresolution decomposition in space domain. In the time domain, with a wavelet transform taking into account a correlation between frames, a temporal redundancy is reduced. In the space domain, using a structuring by acquiring surrounding vertices in order to apply the multiresolution decomposition, polygonal meshes that have a complex connectivity are structured in 2-D plane, and then, the structured 2-D data are compressed with a connectivity-oriented multiresolution decomposition and SFQ (space-frequency quantization). As a result of applying the proposed method and comparing it with the widely used coding scheme Dynapack, we confirmed a better coding efficiency especially in low bit rate. A novel coding method using multiresolution decomposition for triangular mesh is proposed. We have proposed surrounding vertices structuring on a 2-D plane to obtain 2-D structured geometry data. In this paper, nonseparable component decomposition is proposed to decompose the structured geometry data in consideration of correlations among neighboring vertices. The structured data are decomposed into four components depending on whether each vertex was located at even or odd positions along the horizontal and vertical axes. And a prediction and update are performed. In the prediction process the predicted value is obtained from the non-processed vertices neighboring to the target vertex in the 3-D space. By repeating the decomposition process for the update component, octave-decomposed coefficients are obtained. The vector SFQ is introduced to remove redundancies among the coefficients at similar positions in different resolution levels. Experiments showed that the proposed method gave better coding performances comparing to conventional coding schemes.

Geometry Coding for Triangular Mesh Model with Structuring Surrounding Vertices and Connectivity-Oriented Multiresolution Decomposition

In this paper, we propose a novel coding scheme for the geometry of the triangular mesh model. The geometry coding schemes can be classified into two groups: schemes with perfect reconstruction property that maintains their connectivity, and schemes without it in which the remeshing procedure is performed to change the mesh to semi-regular or regular mesh. The former schemes have good coding performance at higher coding rate, while the latter give excellent coding performance at lower coding rate. We propose a geometry coding scheme that maintains the connectivity and has a perfect reconstruction property. We apply a method that successively structures on 2-D plane the surrounding vertices obtained by expanding vertex sequences neighboring the previous layer. Non-separable component decomposition is applied, in which 2-D structured data are decomposed into four components depending on whether their location was even or odd on the horizontal and vertical axes in the 2-D plane. And a prediction and update are performed for the decomposed components. In the prediction process the predicted value is obtained from the vertices, which were not processed, neighboring the target vertex in the 3-D space. And the zero-tree coding is introduced in order to remove the redundancies between the coefficients at similar positions in different resolution levels. SFQ (space-frequency quantization) is applied, which gives the optimal combination of coefficient pruning for the descendant coefficients of each tree element and a uniform quantization for each coefficient. Experiments applying the proposed method to several polygon meshes of different resolutions show that the proposed method gives a better coding performance at lower bit rate when compared to the conventional schemes.

A two-channel MDC framework based on the space-frequency quantization (SFQ) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Redundancy used in this frame is introduced by the overlap of the optimization sets. For each channel contains the information from all the three directions, the reconstruction of the one single channel can give a good estimation of the original information. Good experimental results show the efficiency of this new proposed method.
