This work studies the effect of in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance on time-reversal space-time block coded (TR-STBC) communication systems operating over frequency-selective fading channels. The transceiver I/Q imbalance in a 2 x 1 TR orthogonal STBC (TR-OSTBC) system is studied in detail, and low-complexity mitigation solutions are proposed by exploiting the special structure of the received data. Our results show that the proposed solutions both in time domain and in frequency domain can effectively mitigate the I/Q distortion in such a system.

Spectrum scarcity is an obstacle to deploy emerging high speed wireless services that require more frequency spectrum. Cognitive radio (CR) appears as a promising solution for the spectral congestion by allowing spectrum sharing between primary and secondary users in which optimum utilization of the available spectrum is achieved. Efficient coex- istence between different users requires full knowledge of the activities in the spectrum of interest. Spectrum awareness is the terminology used to describe the techniques that detect the presence of signals in certain frequency bands, as well as identify the main pa- rameters of such signals, e. g., modulation scheme. These two tasks are commonly referred by the terms spectrum sensing and signal identification, respectively. Blind signal identification was initially used by military applications, such as radio surveillance and electronic warfare, and has recently been extended to civilian applica- tions. This problem becomes more challenging in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios due to the diverse transmission schemes that can be employed, e. g., spatial multi- plexing (SM) and space-time block codes (STBCs). A large number of studies have been carried out for developing blind signal identification algorithms in single-input single- output (SISO) scenarios, including identification of the modulation format and recogni- tion of single-carrier (SC) versus multicarrier transmissions. However, the problem of signal identification for MIMO systems remains at an incipient stage. In this dissertation, we develop novel algorithms to blindly identify the MIMO transmission scheme of the received signal. More specifically, in Chapters 2 and 3, we address the problem of identifying STBCs for the SC transmission. Unlike most of the work done to date, we show that STBC iden- tification can be performed using a single receive antenna. Four algorithms are proposed in Chapter 2 to identify SM and Alamouti STBC. Considering the multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) communication systems under both cases of limited and unlimited power per transmitted antenna, the paper proposes an algorithm of optimal transmit power, referred to as water-filling algorithm. The principle of power allocation under limited power systems and no limited power ones are discussed, respectively. The principle of power water-filling for the limited-power systems is introduced and examples also are provided. Following, the paper considers the performance of multiple transmit and single receive antenna (MISO) system employing orthogonal space-time block coding (STBC) and binary phase shift-keying (BPSK) modulation, and derives a Chernoff upper bound (CUB) theoretical expression of bit error rate (BER) for the multiple transmit antennas selection MISO systems. The numerical results show that appropriate power allocation for transmit antennas selected can effectively enhance system bit error performance. Meanwhile, the performance improvement is not obvious if total transmit power is filled to the best antenna selected. These conclusions have a guidance function in practical mobile communication systems.

In this paper, we propose a space-time block coded (STBC) amplify-and-forward cooperative (STBC-Co-AF) relay which requires no knowledge of CSI at relay station (RS). In STBC-Co-AF relay, the source node transmits 2-block signal to both RS and the destination node in the first time slot and then, RS transmits amplified STBC-coded signal to the destination node in the second time slot. The destination node performs a series of frequency-domain equalization (FDE), diversity combining, and STBC decoding by viewing the concatenation of the channels between the source node-RS link and between the RS-destination node link as an equivalent channel. We evaluate, by computer simulation, the average bit error rate (BER) performance when using STBC-Co-AF relay and show that the STBC-Co-AF relay can achieves the BER performance superior to Co-AF relay.

Distributed antenna small-cell network is a promising 5G network. In this paper, a comprehensive report of recent advance in the cooperative distributed antenna transmission (CDAT) is provided. Single-user space-time block coded transmit diversity (STBC-TD) and multi-user minimum mean square error filtering combined with singular value decomposition (MMSE-SVD) are presented. Also presented is blind selected mapping (blind SLM) which can suppress the peak-to-average signal power ratio (PAPR) and requires no side information transmission. The effectiveness of CDAT in the presence of co-channel interference (CCI) from adjacent macro-cells is confirmed by computer simulation.

In this paper we propose a cooperative protocol for cognitive wireless networks that can improve the overall system spectral efficiency when a secondary user (SU) incorrectly transmits over the same resource with the primary user (PU). The interfering transmissions are received at relay nodes, that form the cooperative network, and are decoded with successive interference cancellation (SIC). Depending on the decoding results, each relay applies independently a space-time code (STC) to the result and then the relays forward the coded signals simultaneously. The advantages of the protocol are first that it operates passively without the need for source cooperation, and second that it does not adopt a different mode of cooperation for different average channel conditions. Comparative simulations with a state-of-the-art multi-source transmission protocol reveal that our protocol can minimize the impact of incorrectly detecting a PU transmission from the perspective of the overall system spectral efficiency.

This paper deals with some of the problems arising in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems, when the receiver's clock is not synchronized to the modulator. Considering that the spatial diversity is exploited through quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (QOSTBC), we examine the influence of the remaining timing offset on the performance of the system, after coarse timing acquisition has been carried out at the receiver. Specifically, by utilizing the statistical properties of the channel paths and simulating the time error as a uniformly distributed random variable, we show that the average trace of the diversity gain matrix (DGM) undergoes a decrease with respect to the ideal case of zero intersymbol interference (ISI).

In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for single-group multicasting using a relay network. We assume a source that transmits messages via an amplify-and-forward relay network to multiple destinations. The goal is to minimize the maximum transmitted power of the relays under constraints on the signal-to-noise ratios at the destinations. To increase the degrees of freedoms in the system, the relays process two source signals jointly, using two different relay beamforming weight vectors. The Alamouti space-time block code is transmitted over two beams. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme combined with a proposed sequential convex programming algorithm compared to methods of the literature and to the theoretical lower bound.

Recently, spatial modulation (SM) and space-time block coding (STBC) are combined to take advantage of the benefits of both while avoiding their drawbacks for multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The pioneering works on STBC-SM assume that perfect knowledge of the channel fading coefficients is available at the receiver. This work(1) addresses the challenging and timely problem of channel estimation for 4 x 4 STBC-SM systems in the presence of time-varying channels. In this paper, the estimation of channel at pilot durations is done by least square (LS) method and then the channel interpolation is performed by linear interpolation or nearest neighbor interpolation algorithms. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed channel estimation based on the linear interpolation offer substantial performance gains over the channel estimation based on the nearest neighbor interpolation. In particular, a savings of about 5dB is obtained at BER = 10(-5), as compared with the nearest interpolation based receiver at 120km/h for 4 x 4 STBC-SM systems with the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation.

Performance analysis of cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying system with a single relay is discussed in this paper. The MIMO scheme is based on Alamouti space-time block coding (STBC) over Rayleigh flat fading channels. The source node, equipped with two transmit antennas, simply broadcasts each STBC code to the relay and the destination nodes. Then, the relay node, equipped with multiple antennas, amplifies-and-forwards (AF) the received STBC codes. Finally, the destination node uses maximum ratio combining (MRC) and exploits the diversity gain obtained through the direct and the indirect links simultaneously. Lower bounds of the symbol error probability (SEP) and the outage probability are derived using the moment generating function (MGF) of the total signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a particular signal of Mary- quadrature-amplitude modulation (M-QAM). Subsequently, simulation results are provided to verify the validity of the analytical results.
