An embedded differential space-time coding method is proposed for wireless broadcast application in this work. Our previous work [1] investigated embedded space-time codes for layered media broadcast. In such a system, a transmitter sends out multi-layer source signals by encoding different layers with different space-time codes. Then, the receiver can retrieve a different amount of information depending on the number of antennas it has as well as the level of receiving power. The receiving terminals with one antenna can decode only the base layer information with a low complexity while terminals with more antennas can retrieve more layers of information. In this research, we further consider the case when the channel state information (CSI) is unknwon. The differential coding technique is adopted here. Transmitted symbols are encoded as a certain combination of previous symbols so that the receiver can retrieve the information without CSI. We explore the embedded design with differential STC to enable layered media transmission. Differential detection with Kalman filtering is also investigated to help improve performance.

This paper proposes a fast method to calculate the reflection phase distribution for intelligent reflecting surface (IRSs), a.k.a. reconfigurable metasurfaces, to reflect impinged electromagnetic (EM) waves towards a desired angle at different harmonic frequencies shifted from the central frequency. The proposed method exploits the strengths of two techniques, namely 2D Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) and an evolutionary optimization approach based on Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). Results show that the proposed method can reduce the time of conventional phase distribution calculation for a 10x10 metasurface by 98.02%.

In this paper, a differential space-time coding (D-STC) scheme is presented for relay assisted cooperative wireless communication networks over frequency selective fading channels. Two most common schemes, i.e., differential amplify-and-forward (DAF) and differential decode-and-forward (DDF), are both investigated in our single relay assisted system. Leveraging spectral encoder and differential space-time modulation, our proposed scheme can achieve multipath diversity without instantaneous channel state information at each node. Moreover, the direct link is also taken into consideration. Theoretical analysis demonstrates a diversity gain of L-3 + min {L-1, L-2} + 2, where L-1, L-2 and L-3 are the channel order for source-relay (S -> R), relay-destination (R -> D) and source-destination (S -> D) links, respectively. Simulation results are presented to validate the good performance of the coding scheme and DST modulation of DAF and DDF.

The exact Pair-wise Error Probabilities (PEP) formulas developed for space-time (S-T) coding so far either are not in the closed forms or have the closed forms but need to calculate very complicated high order derivatives, and so are not easy to use. This paper derives, for S-T coding in block Rayleigh fading, a new exact PEP formula which is expressed as the summation of a series of terms to the powers of 1/Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (1/SNR). The result gives researchers an easier and more convenient way for bit-error-rate (BER) evaluation and optimization of S-T coded Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. Monte Carlo simulation results of the BER performance of a 2-by-2 S-T coded system are used to verify our results.

In this paper, we propose a trace-orthogonal space-time coding (TD-STC) for multi-user systems. Based on the flexibility of linear dispersive codes (LDC), we apply it to broadcast channels in multi-user systems. According to the transmission rates of user's, we adaptively construct the transmitting space-time coding matrix. At the same time, we give the design criterion of the spacetimecoding for multi-user systems. At the receiver, exploiting the characteristic of trace orthogonal, the complexity of decoder based on MMSE criterion will not increase apparently. Compared with orthogonal space-time coding (OSTC), our proposed TD-STC can greatly decrease the complexity of ML decoding instead of little performance loss. When in the lower SNP, the proposed scheme is better than the scheme when applying orthogonal space-time coding.

The theory of groups and group representations have been shown by several researchers to generate promising space-time codes for multiple-antenna links in wireless communication. In this report, potential codes from a root system in a real Euclidean space are examined. In particular, general properties of codes from the infinite irreducible systems A(1), B-1, C-1, and D-1 are analytically studied, while codes from the exceptional systems G(2), F-4, E-6, E-7 and E-8 are numerically determined. Some of these exceptional codes meet general coding-theoretic expectations, for example in terms of the number of code words. The effort described in this paper is part of a general attempt to assess the use of modular representations of groups, as opposed to classical, i.e. complex-numbered, representations, for antenna diversity. Java technologies are used for the implementation of our numerical experimentation platform.

In this paper, a space-time coded adaptive MQAM scheme with variable power is developed for MIMO system. Under the target BER and average power constraint, the optimum SNR switching thresholds for the developed scheme are generated by using the Lagrange method, which can make the scheme maximize the spectrum efficiency (SE). Besides, the closed-form expressions for the SE and average BER of the scheme are derived. Simulation results show that our scheme is superior to the corresponding constant-power space-time coded adaptive MQAM scheme. Moreover, the SE and average BER from theory computation accords with those from the simulation results.

When applying the space-time coding technique into the ultrasound imaging system, the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) can be improved. However when the space-time coding combines with the conventional synthetic aperture techniques can result some ghost images because the conventional synthetic aperture technique cannot suppress the axial direction of the side-lobe which emerges after pulse compression and thereby reducing the image quality. To solve the problem of ghost imaging, this paper introduces a new method, which combines the techniques of space-time coding and ultrasonic back-propagation synthetic aperture. The main idea of the method is that different locations using different coding pulse emission. It can be achieved by using the Truncated long code[1]. The synthetic aperture technique based on the ultrasonic back-propagation is then applied for processing the echo signals to further improve the SNR as well as suppress the axial side-lobe. The crosstalk among echo signals can also be reduced. Simulation shows positive results of the new method. Both detection sensitivity and robustness against noise are improved and overall performance of the image system is enhanced.
