space-time coding techniques with bit-interleaved coded modulations for MIMO block-fading channels

The space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation (ST-BICM) is an efficient technique to obtain high diversity and coding gain on a block-fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. Its maximum-likelihood (ML) performance is computed under ideal interleaving conditions, which enables a global optimization taking into account channel coding. Thanks to a diversity upper bound derived from the Singleton bound, an appropriate choice of the time dimension of the space-time coding is possible, which maximizes diversity while minimizing complexity. Based on the analysis, an optimized interleaver and a set of linear precoders, called dispersive nucleo algebraic (DNA) precoders are proposed. The proposed precoders have good performance with respect to the state of the art and exist for any number of transmit antennas and any time dimension. With turbo codes, they exhibit a frame error rate which does not increase with frame length.

In this letter, we study space-time (ST) block coding for single carrier zero-padded (ZP) block transmissions through finite impulse response (FER) multipath fading channels of order L. We prove that maximum diversity of order 2 (L + 1) is achieved with two transmit and one receive antennae. Simulations demonstrate that joint exploitation of multi-antenna diversity and multipath diversity leads to significantly enhanced performance.

In this paper we investigate how to increase the capacity of GSM radio interfaces in subway tunnel environments by means of antenna arrays and space-time coding (STC) techniques. We first consider space-time equalization techniques that only account for the noise and the Intersymbol Interference (ISI). Then, we show how to improve the performance by considering of a ST encoder at transmission and an iterative ST decoding algorithm at reception.

In [1]. antenna selection for multiple antenna transmission systems has been studied under the assumption that the subchannels between antenna pairs fade independently. In this paper, we consider the performance of such systems when the subchannels experience correlated fading. We assume that the channel state information is available only at the receiver. the antenna selection is performed only at the receiver, and the selection is based on the instantaneous received signal power. We quantify the effects of channel correlation on the diversity and coding gain when the receiver system uses all or a subset of the antennas. Theoretical results indicate that the correlations in the channel does not degrade the diversity order provided that the channel is full-rank. However, it does result in some performance loss in the coding gain. Furthermore, for non-full-rank channels. the diversity order of the system degrades significantly and is determined by the rank of the channel correlation matrix.

This paper aims to provide a new transmit diversity technique for fast fading channels. To this end, a combination of space-time coding and unitary matrices at the encoder side is proposed, showing the maximum diversity gain for the case of 2, 4 and 8 transmit antennas and an arbitrary number of receive antennas can be achieved in such channels. This simplifies the maximum likelihood decoding algorithm, which can be translated to a simple linear processing at the receiver side.

The paper presents a method for constructing space-time block codes for multiple-input multiple-output channels by concatenating orthogonal designs with the so-called diversity transform. Relying on unitary transforms, the diversity transform increases the channel alphabet without sacrificing information rate, bandwidth, or Euclidean distance. The distribution of the resulting channel alphabet is shown to quickly become Gaussian-like. Specific code matrices are constructed and optimized based on the cutoff rate. Both optimum and, reduced-complexity, suboptimum detection algorithms are presented. Simulation results are provided for demonstrating the gains attainable when using the proposed codes.

Communication using orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes has recently received a considerable interest in free space optical (FSO) communications. Propagating OAM modes through free space may be subject to atmospheric turbulence (AT) distortions that cause intermodal crosstalk and power disparities between OAM modes. In this paper, we are interested in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) coherent FSO communication systems using OAM multiplexing. We propose space-time (ST) coding at the transmitter to enhance the bit error rate (BER) performance against atmospheric turbulence. Through numerical simulations, we show performance improvement thanks to ST coded schemes for different MIMO dimensions. Furthermore, we derive an analytical expression for the error probability upper bound of the ST coded OAM FSO channel affected by atmospheric turbulence. The theoretical error probability is compared with Monte Carlo simulations and a good agreement is observed.

Power control scheme for multiple antenna systems with space-time coding in Rayleigh fading channels

Two optimal power control （PC） schemes under the power constraint for space-time coded multiple input multiple output systems over the flat Rayleigh fading channel with the imperfect channel state information （CSI） are presented. One is based on the minimization of a bit error rate （BER）, and the other is based on the maximization of a fuzzy signal-to-noise ratio. In these schemes, different powers are allocated to individual transmit an- tennas rather than equal power in the conventional one. For the first scheme, the optimal PC procedure is developed. It is shown that the Lagrange multiplier for the constrained optimization in the power control does exist and is unique. A practical iterative algorithm based on Newton＇s method for finding the Lagrange multiplier is proposed. In the second scheme, some existing schemes are included, and a suboptimal PC procedure is developed by means of the asymptotic performance analysis. With this suboptimal scheme, a simple PC calculation formula is provided, and thus the calculation of the PC will be straightforward. Moreover, the suboptimal scheme has the BER performance close to the optimal scheme. Simulation results show that the two PC schemes can provide BER lower than the equal PC and antenna selection scheme under the imperfect CSI.

In this paper, we investigate spatial diversity techniques for free-space optical (FSO) links with intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) over log-normal atmospheric turbulence-induced fading channels. We consider the deployment of space-time block codes and repetition codes. Our performance analysis demonstrates that although both schemes are able to extract full diversity, repetition codes outperform their counterparts. The performance gap increases as the number of transmit apertures increases. Oar findings clearly point out that deployment of space-time coding is not necessary for a FSO IM/DD link.

Cooperative communication is a promising technology to improve the performance of resource-limited or cost-sensitive single antenna wireless equipment. Moreover, full duplex (FD) could theoretically double the spectral efficiency of a cooperative communication system comparing to the conventional half duplex (HD) communication. Although researchers have studied FD cooperative communication with two source nodes, and proposed an Alamouti-style space-time code, there is not much works on multiple source nodes scenarios yet. This article presents our results on the FD cooperative communication with multiple source nodes. We provide two orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) for both three and four source nodes scenarios. The proposed codes skillfully share data in as less time slots as possible by taking advantages of the FD communication. Consequently, spectral efficiency of the FD cooperation is improved. Furthermore, the proposed codes provide full diversity in addition to a simple ML decoding. Finally, computer simulations verify the performance of the proposed OSTBC design.
