A MIMO system with finite-bit feedback based on fixed constellations

In this paper,a MIMO system with finite-bit feedback based on fixed constellations is *** on performance analysis of the system,an optimal operating system with maximum-likelihood decoding is ***,this operation reveals that the optimal way for the system to transmit signals needs to invoke the multimode *** propose designing criteria for this scheme and methods for pre-codebooks,and a method to determine the number of modes for any specific ***,to reduce encoding complexity at the receiver side,we also develop a fast encoding *** analysis and simulations show that the proposed systems offer considerable gain over existing ***,these systems also have much lower encoding ***,for the case of a MIMO system with two pairs of transmitting and receiving antennas,a properly designed system with a transmission rate of 8 bits per channel use and with 6-bit feedback can provide about a 1.5 dB performance gain over a beamforming system.

Differential space-time modulation over frequency-selective channels

We present herein a new differential space-time-frequency (DSTF) modulation scheme for systems that are equipped with an arbitrary number of transmit antennas and operate in frequency-selective channels. The proposed DSTF modulator consists of a concatenating spectral encoder and differential encoder that offer full spatio-spectral diversity and significant coding gain. A unitary structure is imposed on the differential encoder to admit linear, decoupled maximum likelihood (ML) detection in space and time. Optimum criteria based on pairwise error probability analysis are developed for spectral encoder design. We introduce a class of spectral codes, namely, linear constellation decimation (LCD) codes, which are nonbinary block codes obtained by decimating a phase-shift-keying (PSK) constellation with a group of decimation factors that are co-prime with the constellation size. Since LCD codes encode across a minimally necessary set of subchannels for full diversity, they incur modest decoding complexity among all full-diversity codes. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed DSTF modulation and coding scheme, which compares favorably with several existing differential space-time schemes in frequency-selective channels.

Low complexity adative design for full-diversity full-rate space-time codes

Full-diversity full rate (FDFR) space-time codes for open-loop multiple antenna systems achieve both high data rate and good performance but come with very high decoding complexity. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity adaptive FDFR design for closed-loop multiple-input multiple-output systems. With only partial channel subspace knowledge at the transmitter, we adapt the open-loop FDFR code to the channel to maintain the special layer structure structure of the code at the receiver. That special layer structure enables use to decouple the joint detection over dimension C-t(N2) into N-t individual decoders of dimensions C-Nt, where N-t is the number of transmit antennas. This can also be seen as combining the channel diagonalization with signal diversity rotation. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed, and it is shown that the full diversity property is maintained in the adaptive design. Adaptive power loading is also incorporated to further exploit channel state information in term of the knowledge of the singular values of the channel. The optimal loading schemes are derived for systems with linear receivers.

Progressive image transmission over space-time coded OFDM-based MIMO systems with adaptive modulation

This paper considers a progressive image transmission system over wireless channels by combining joint source-channel coding (JSCC), space-time coding, and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The BER performance of the space-time coded OFDM-based MIMO system based on a newly built broadband MIMO fading model is first evaluated by assuming perfect channel state information at the receiver for coherent detection. Then, for a given average SNR ( hence, BER), a fast local search algorithm is applied to optimize the unequal error protection design in JSCC, subjected to fixed total transmitted energy for various constellation sizes. This design allows the measurement of the expected reconstructed image quality. With this end-to-end system performance evaluation, an adaptive modulation scheme is proposed to pick the constellation size that offers the best reconstructed image quality for each average SNR. Simulation results of practical image transmissions confirm the effectiveness of our proposed adaptive modulation scheme.

This paper proposes a full-rate space-time code selection technique for multiple transmitter antenna diversity systems. The technique uses orthogonal space-time codes for transmitting with two antennas and a quasi-orthogonal space-time code when transmitting with four antennas. We selected the space-time code and the transmitter antennas by comparing the equivalent SISO channels with a set of predetermined threshold levels, found off-line as a function of the Doppler frequency. The performance of the proposed technique was evaluated using the error rate and the spectral efficiency, outperforming other existing techniques.

Classical and Quantum Processing in the Deep Physical Layer

The objective of this paper is to examine the processing of the electromagnetic field in the physical communication channel of wireless systems using the concept of the "Deep Physical Layer" (DPL), a layer that is positioned below the Physical Layer of the OSI model. The article delves into the fundamental concept of DPL and presents several numerical findings on devices that can process the field directly in the DPL. These devices are called Electromagnetic field Processing Devices (EPDs) and consist of reflective elements that are extensively distributed in space. They can intelligently modify the spatial configuration of the electromagnetic field to achieve efficient processing. The study reveals that EPDs offer the potential to encode a massive amount of information in the spatial domain. Additionally, the results suggest that quantum computers are an indispensable technology to gain unrestricted access to the large resources that utilizing EPDs in the DPL can unlock. To fully utilize this vast resource necessitates addressing the challenge of searching an unstructured database, which poses a difficulty for classical computers. However, this problem can be efficiently solved by quantum computers using Grover's algorithm.

Full-rate distributed space-time codes for cooperative communications

A full-rate distributed space-time (ST) code design is proposed for amplify-and-forward cooperative wireless channels. By employing a signal space diversity technique at the source node and a unique signature vector at each relay node, the proposed distributed ST codes can achieve full cooperative diversity and full rate. The achievable diversity gain is shown to be M + 1, where M is the number of relay nodes. Optimal power allocation is also proposed to maximize the coding gain under a total power constraint.

Scalable Quadrature Spatial Modulation

We consider quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) schemes, which achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) via the dispersion of a relatively small number P of M-ary modulated symbols over a large number of combinations of n(T) transmit antennas and T transmit instances. In particular, we design a new space-time block code (STBC)-based scalable QSM scheme combining high SE with maximum diversity and optimum coding gains. Deriving a closed-form expression for the optimum SE, we show that scaling the size T with n(T) not only is required to achieve SE optimality, hut also results in further gains in bit error rate (BER) performance. Building on the latter optimal parameterization, a fully optimized scalable QSM (OS-QSM) transmitter design is then obtained by introducing a new dispersion matrix index selection algorithm that ensures even utilization of spatial-temporal resources. Finally, a new greedy boxed iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (GB-ISTA) QSM receiver is proposed, which exploits the inherent sparsity of QSM signals and while detecting spatially and digitally modulated bits in a greedy fashion. The resulting low complexity of the new receiver, which is linear on n(T), enables the utilization of OS-QSM in systems of previously prohibitive dimensions.

Optimal and Lattice Codes in a MIMO System With Complete Feedback

space time coding for a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) system with complete feedback and maximum-likelihood (ML)-decoding is considered. First, a criterion for designing an optimal codebook with complete feedback in the case of high signal to noise ratio (SNR) is given;it turns out that designing an optimal codebook with complete feedback in the case of high SNR is equivalent to efficiently packing a finite number of points into a dynamic ellipsoid in a finite dimensional real Euclidean space. Second, based on this design criterion, an optimal tradeoff between diversity and multiplexing is then derived. Finally, practical design using lattice codes is addressed, and surprisingly, it is shown that the lattice codes can achieve the optimal tradeoff. It is also demonstrated that it is not necessary for an optimal lattice code to use all the subchannels generated by the system. This is in striking contrast with a general optimal code, which generally utilizes all the subchannels.

Iterative decoding of concatenated layered space-time trellis codes on MIMO block fading multipath AWGN channel

In this paper, we propose the building of high rate space-time codes for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) block fading multipath additive white Gaussian noise channels by layering small compound space-time trellis codes. To recover part of the spatial diversity between the different layers, we also study their concatenation with an outer code. Naturally, our space-time coding architecture puts the burden on the receiver complexity. As a main contribution of this paper, a near-optimal soft-input soft-output reduced-complexity trellis search algorithm is suggested for joint MIMO detection and inner decoding.
