Low-complexity channel-adapted space-time coding scheme for frequency-selective wireless MIMO channels

By exploiting the wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel structure, a brand new space-time code design criterion is derived. Based on the new criterion, we propose one low-compiexity channel-adapted space-time (CAST) coding scheme, where trade-offs among codeword error rate, data throughput, and computational complexity are very flexible. Simulation results confirm that, in the frequency-selective MIMO channels, the CAST coding scheme can perform significantly better than the existing space-time codes, e.g., Alamouti space-time orthogonal code.

Performance of Multiband Complex-Wavelet-Based MC-CDMA System with space-time coding over Nakagami-m Fading Channels

space-time coding technique and Multi-carrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) technique have received much interest due to their high frequency spectrum efficiency and high data rate transmission. On the basis of analyzing the two technique principle, utilizing the optimized multiband complex wavelet as multi-carrier basis function, we propose an MC-CDMA system based on multiband complex wavelet and space-time coding for downlink and investigate the system bit error rate (BER) performance over Nakagami-m fading channel. The system has much higher spectrum efficiency and data rate due to no need any cyclic prefix (CP) when compared to the conventional MC-CDMA system. Moreover, the application of space-time coding technique improves the ability against fading channel effectively and perfects the downlink performance further. Simulation results show that the proposed multiband complex-wavelet-based MC-CDMA (MBCW-MC-CDMA) system performs better than conventional MC-CDMA system and real wavelet-packet-based MC-CDMA system due to its superior ability against interferences. Especially, the space-time coded MBCW-MC-CDMA system has superior performance, and it outperforms single antenna MBCW-MC-CDMA and conventional MC-CDMA with space-time coding.

Noncoherent space-time coding: An algebraic perspective

The design of space-time signals for noncoherent block-fading channels where the channel state information is not known a priori at the transmitter and the receiver is considered. In particular, a new algebraic formulation for the diversity advantage design criterion is developed. The new criterion encompasses, as a special case, the well-known diversity advantage for unitary space-time signals and, more importantly, applies to arbitrary signaling schemes and arbitrary channel distributions. This criterion is used to establish the optimal diversity-versus-rate tradeoff for training based schemes in block-fading channels. Our results are then specialized to the class of affine space-time signals which allows for a low complexity decoder. Within this class, space-time constellations based on the threaded algebraic space-time (TAST) architecture are considered. These constellations achieve the optimal diversity-versus-rate tradeoff over noncoherent block-fading channels and outperform previously proposed codes in the considered scenarios as demonstrated by the numerical results. Using the analytical and numerical results developed in this paper, nonunitary space-time codes are argued to offer certain advantages in block-fading channels where the appropriate use of coherent space-time codes is shown to offer a very efficient solution to the noncoherent space-time communication paradigm.

On Beamforming and Orthogonal space-time coding in Cognitive Networks with Partial CSI

We consider a pair of secondary users that coexist, in a cognitive network, with multiple primary user pairs. The secondary link is supplied with partial network side information (NSI), which comprises message side information and partial channel side information (CSI), available in different levels at both the transmitter and the receiver of the cognitive link. The cognitive transceiver design has to obey predefined quality-of-service (QoS) criteria, that need to be maintained at the primary receivers, and at the same time properly handle the incoming interference from each primary transmitter in order to establish reliable communication. In this framework, we investigate the design and performance of the combined beamforming and orthogonal space-time block coding (BOSTBC) strategy, whose merits are well-documented, as a candidate transmission scheme for the secondary link. We study both aspects, QoS and interference, of the composite problem and characterize how they affect the beamformer design and the cognitive link performance, in the presence of partial NSI. Further, we propose a CSI quality-dependent model for the QoS criteria which yields an interesting trade-off between the cognitive link design and the primary QoS. Numerical results illustrate the system performance in this framework.

MIMO Waveform Design for Dual Functions of Radar and Communication With space-time coding

Sharing a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, the single platform can achieve dual functions of radar and communication (DFRC) within the same frequency spectrum, via the same transmit waveforms. In this paper, a space-time coding scheme is developed for transmit beamforming of DFRC and embedding communication information, without their cross-interference. For transmit beampattern design of DFRC, the shape approximation and integrated power approximation criteria are adopted respectively for waveforms optimization with the constant-envelope constraints of transmit waveforms and the equivalent signal in the communication direction. Based on the space-time coding scheme, the direct constellation mapping (DCM) and phase-rotation constellation mapping (PRCM) methods are proposed to embed information symbols. It turns out that the proposed space-time coding scheme for information constellation mapping can prevent missing information symbols and have better performance in bit-error rate (BER), compared to the existing information-embedding techniques. Moreover, the scheme can reduce the dependence of the communication data rate on radar pulse repetition frequency (PRF). Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

MIMO antenna subset selection with space-time coding

This paper treats multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna subset selection employing space-time coding. We consider two cases differentiated based on the type of channel knowledge used in the selection process. We address both the selection algorithms and the performance analysis. We first consider the case when the antenna subsets are selected based on exact channel knowledge (ECK). Our results assume the transmission of orthogonal space-time block codes (with emphasis on the Alamouti code). Next, we treat the case of antenna subset selection when statistical channel knowledge (SCK) is employed by the selection algorithm. This analysis is applicable to general space-time coding schemes. When ECK is available, we show that the selection algorithm chooses the antenna set that maximizes the channel Frobenius norm leading to both coding and diversity gain. When SCK is available, the selection algorithm chooses the antenna set that maximizes the determinant of the covariance of the vectorized channel leading mostly to a coding gain. In case of ECK-based selection, we provide analytical expressions for average SNR and outage probability improvement. For the case when SCK-based selection is used, we derive expressions for coding gain. We also present extensive simulation studies, validating our results.

An Efficient Adaptive Distributed space-time coding Scheme for Cooperative Relaying

A non-regenerative dual-hop wireless system based on distributed Alamouti space-time coding is considered. It is assumed that each relay retransmits an appropriately scaled space-time coded version of its received signal. The main goal of this paper is to find a scaling function for each relay to minimize the outage probability. In the high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) regime for the relay-destination link, it is shown that a threshold-based scaling function (i.e., the relay remains silent if its channel gain with the source is less than its predetermined threshold). is optimum from the outage probability point of view. Numerical results demonstrate a dramatic performance improvement as compared to the case that the relay stations forward their received signals with full power even for finite SNR scenarios.

Combining beamforming and space-time coding using quantized feedback

We combine space-time coding and transmit beam-forming over multiple-antenna quasi-static fading channels using limited-rate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). The combining is performed using a class of constellation sets inspired from orthogonal designs and directional beamforming or in general, unitary precoding with quantized feedback. This constellation class is called partly orthogonal designs (PODs). The conventional way of combining coding and quantized feedback beamforming is through precoded space-time block codes (PSTBCs) that provide full-diversity order with all system configurations in terms of the number of feedback regions and the number of transmit antennas. PODs maintain the same advantage. However, they require less decoding and quantization complexity compared to PSTBCs. We develop POD structures, analyze their performance, and optimize them based on pairwise error probability analysis. PODs create a larger combining space compared to PSTBCs. We can show that with certain system configurations, PODs outperform PSTBCs. Using PODs, we also propose a combined coding, beamforming, and spatial multiplexing scheme over inultiple-antenna multi-user channels that enables a low-complexity joint interference cancellation scheme.

Optimal space-time coding under iterative processing

In this paper, we deal with the design of a full-rate space-time block coding (STBC) scheme optimized for linear iterative decoding over fast fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. A general and simple coding scheme called diagonal threaded space-time (DTST) code is presented for an arbitrary number of transmit and receive antennas. Theoretical analysis shows that DTST code associated with linear iterative decoding tends towards full diversity performance while providing maximum MIMO multiplexing gain. Simulation results confirm the ability of DTST to outperform the state-of-the-art STBC and conventional spatial data multiplexing schemes under iterative processing.

Symbol-timing estimation in space-time coding systems based on orthogonal training sequences

space-time coding has received considerable interest recently as a simple transmit diversity technique for improving the capacity and data rate of a channel without bandwidth expansion. Most research in space-time coding, however, assumes that the symbol timing at the receiver is perfectly known. In practice, this has to be estimated with high accuracy. In this paper, a new symbol-timing estimator for space-time coding systems is proposed. It improves the conventional algorithm of Naguib et al. such that accurate timing estimates can be obtained even if the over-sampling ratio is small. Analytical mean-square error (MSE) expressions are derived for the proposed estimator. Simulation and analytical results show that for a modest oversampling ratio (such as Q equal to four), the MSE of the proposed estimator is significantly smaller than that of the conventional algorithm. The effects of the number of transmit and receive antennas, the oversampling ratio, and the length of training sequence on the MSE are also examined.
