The exponential growth of cellular radio, WLANs and the Internet sets the context for a discussion on the role and objectives of 4G. In this paper OFDM is proposed as a leading candidate for a 4G cellular communications standard. The key design considerations and link parameters for a 4G OFDM system are identified and initial physical layer performance results are presented for a number of transmission modes and channel scenarios. Additionally, space-time techniques are considered as a means of enhancing the performance of the coded OFDM system.

In this paper, we investigate the effect of imperfect channel estimation on the performance of inter-vehicular communication systems. In particular, we derive the bit error rate (BER) expression in the presence of channel estimation errors for a space-time block coded (STBC) inter-vehicular communication system based on cascaded Rayleigh fading. Our diversity analysis reveals that the underlying scheme is able to extract the full spatial diversity. Based on the derived BER expression, we formulate a power-allocation problem to optimally allocate power to both training and data transmission phases.

Non-binary low density parity check codes (LDPC) have been shown to outperform their binary counterparts and attain the best-known performance among error-correction codes. At the same time, it has also been established that wireless communication using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) schemes dramatically increases system capacity and reliability when information symbols are appropriately coded and modulated across transmit antennas. Recent works have studied techniques for applying non-binary LDPC codes to MIMO systems and demonstrated near-capacity performance. However, the constellation sizes in the proposed approaches are limited by the Galois field (GF) size of the non-binary LDPC code, thus limiting the maximum spectral efficiency of the proposed joint modulation-coding approaches. In practice, the GF size may be limited by computational complexity reasons but high spectral efficiencies are desired. Thus, we study iterative coded modulation based techniques for applying non-binary LDPC codes to higher order modulations. These methods have been well-studied for binary codes but not for non-binary codes. It is demonstrated that performance of the technique is dependent on the mapping of GF symbols to constellations, but applying the appropriate mapping attains near-capacity performance. To reduce the error floor region for smaller field sizes, while maintaining steep waterfall curves, we combine a nonbinary-based accumulator with a parallel concatenated coding scheme.

In this paper, we analyze the error performance of single-input-single-output (SISO) and space-time coded (ST-coded) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with carrier frequency offset (CFO) in frequency-flat Rayleigh fading channels. Exact analytical expressions are derived for the symbol error probability (SEP) for BPSK and QPSK modulation schemes. The analysis presented has the following key features - it explicitly accounts for (i) the non-Gaussian nature of the intercarrier-interference (ICI) noise when the total number of subcarriers is small, and (ii) the dependency of the post-FFT signal and the ICI noise terms due to subcarrier correlations. Thus, the proposed method provides accurate SEP formulae, overcoming the inaccuracies involved in Gaussian approximation based methods reported in literature. The numerical results demonstrate the sensitivity of the receiver error performance to CFO in SISO-OFDM and ST-coded OFDM systems in flat Rayleigh fading channels. Also, the SEP results presented can be interpreted as the lower-bound of error performance in a general frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel.

State-based Spatial Mulitplexing (SBSM) is a novel Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology that enables MIMO operations between simple COTS radios. The SBSM technique works at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer;therefore, the radio only needs to be synchronized at the symbol level instead of the carrier. The technique uses a deconvolution based on an iterative Viterbi decoder to remove the effects of cascaded convolutional processes that represents the channel mixing plus a convolutional forward error correction (FEC) code. The technique uses only the symbol decisions obtained by a base-band demodulator, effectively sampled with relatively few bits of resolution. Combining MAC layer data streams of multiple observations in space provides robustness in addition to spatial multiplexing capabilities. This document presents the SBSM method, compares it to traditional,MIMO methods, and concludes with simulated and measured performance for a 2x2 SBSM system.

We present a new space-time block code (STBC) that is orthogonal, full rate and achieves full diversity for four transmit antennas when a special "Triple-QPSK" modulation is used. The performance of this STBC is evaluated by Monte Carlo simulation and union bounding techniques. The pairwise error probability is presented. The analytical results match very well with the simulation results at reasonable signal to noise ratios (SNR). The performance of this STBC using the "Triple-QPSK" is better than that of the conventional STBC.

The recently introduced concept of Virtual Antenna Arrays (VAA) promises a significant increase in link and system capacity. These therefore constitute a promising candidate for ad-hoc oriented 4G networks. VAA successfully emulates a Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission channel to which space-time Codes (STC) can be applied. The realisation of VAA is accomplished by letting spatially close mobile terminals communicate with each other, which overcomes the disadvantage of having only one receiving antenna in a mobile handset. The thus created ad-hoc network represents a general form of MIMO channels for which a new approach to link capacity calculation is required. The work presented establishes some fundamental tenets for the calculation of link capacity in the Shannon sense to ad-hoc networks, such as VAA. It shows that the capacity drastically increases over a network where each terminal maintains a single link to the base station. The results are somewhat preliminary since VAA constitutes only a minor subset of possible ad-hoc network configurations.

A simple technique to design MIMO space-time block codes that achieve both diversity and rate gains is to stack spatial multiplexing (V-BLAST) and transmit diversity (Alamouti) encoders;these are known as hybrid codes. We increase the spectral efficiency of a simple hybrid code with one V-BLAST layer and one Alamouti layer by using spatial modulation. In spatial modulation systems, information is transmitted, not only by radiating quadrature pulses, but by the selection of specific subsets of the available antennas. We also propose a nearly optimum, low complexity decoder algorithm, which uses heuristic calculations to reduce the search space. We present simulation results that show that the proposed decoder achieves lower error probability than other known decoders under uncorrelated and correlated channel conditions. We also show that the proposed decoder's complexity is lower than that of the tree-search QR-M algorithm, in uncorrelated and uniformly-correlated channels. In correlated channels with Laplacian distribution, the complexity tends to that of QR-M as the SNR increases.

In this work the labelling diversity scheme is developed. The Binary Switching Algorithm is employed to find an optimized 2-dimensional labelling map of 16-QAM constellation, which, applied in conjunction with the best map for iteratively-decoded bit-interleaved space-time coded modulation (BI-STCM-ID), enhances the advantages of multi-antenna transmission. Properties of the proposed scheme are compared with the original BI-STCM-ID by means of Distance Spectrum, Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) Chart and Asymptotic coding Gain calculation. Afterwards they are verified by the Monte-Carlo simulations.

The efficient modulation communication systems via multiple antennas are considered. By using the impacting signals that been filtered after the special impacting filter (SIF) as the transmitted signals, the problem of combining the efficient modulation technique with the space-time coding has been addressed. Additionally, the theoretical analysis of the demodulation and the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding performance has been discussed. Numerical simulations support the theoretical analysing, show that the novel efficient modulation system via multiple antennas can achieve outstanding performance and enhance the space diversity compare with the single antenna efficient systems.
