Analytical closed-form expressions of DC current ripple for three-level neutral point clamped inverters with space-vector pulse-width modulation

The current ripple of the DC bus is a key factor for the DC-link capacitor parameter design of three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters. It directly affects the selection of capacitor type and material. In this study, an analytical closed-form expression of DC current ripple for NPC inverters with space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) is proposed based on an analytical study of the calculation principle of capacitor current ripple and SVPWM algorithm. The closed-form expression of DC-link capacitor current ripple is given by modulation index M and power factor angle phi. The deviation of calculation and experience is within 5.7% in spite of neglecting the output current ripple. The analytical closed-form expression provides a convenient way to design the DC-link capacitor of a three-level NPC inverter.

Matrix converter is a favorable ac-to-ac topology due to its controllability of input power factor and the avoidance of a bulky dc-link capacitor. Although the d-q plane based switching strategy gives a good insight into the vector synthesis, the computation is complicated. This retreats the industrial application of matrix converters. This paper tries to reduce the computation effort of switching strategy for a 3-by-3 matrix converter by adopting carrier-based concept. The simulation results show that the proposed method produces desired output voltage correctly while the input power factor is unity.

Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have been conceived as an alternative in front-end converter applications to enhance the converter system's reliability, minimize total harmonic distortion, and improve power quality. These converters utilize several DC-link capacitors and power electronic switches, along with switches operating with high switching frequencies, to attain the desired characteristics. Thereby, this paper systematically proposes a novel three-phase asymmetric hybrid modular multilevel converter (AHMMC) for front-end converters used in lower-medium-voltage applications. The AHMMC configuration is based on a three-phase converter connected to a per-phase series arrangement with a cascaded converter module (CCM). The study investigates the AHMMC and proposes a control scheme, which minimizes the voltage range on switches and maintains the current to its reference value. Furthermore, the study also introduces an active balancing of voltage across DC-link capacitors based on the phase opposition disposition PWM (POD-PWM) method. Our new configuration has features such as low switching loss, reduced DC-link voltage, a wider modulation range for the unity power factor (PF), and low voltage and current harmonic distortion. The simulation results are added to verify the performance of the new AHMMC topology and the usefulness of the modular control scheme. In addition, a low-voltage laboratory prototype based on customized control and power boards is built to validate the proposed converter and its control scheme in practice.

A Switched-Capacitor-Voltage-Doubler Based Boost Inverter for Common-Mode Voltage Reduction

In this paper, a modified three-phase two-level voltage source inverter is proposed. By combining the conventional three-phase H-bridge inverter with a switched-capacitor-voltage-doubler network, the DC-link voltage of the proposed inverter is double with respect to the input DC voltage. As a result, the output voltage of the proposed inverter can be higher than the input DC voltage. Furthermore, a common-mode voltage (CMV) of the proposed inverter can be reduced through controlling the two additional switches based on the space vector pulse-width modulation. Compared to the existing modulations and topologies, the variation in CMV can only be up to 16.6% of DC-link voltage. Furthermore, the voltage stress across additional switches and diodes is equal to half of DC-link voltage. Mathematical analysis, operating principles, and comparison of the proposed three-phase two-level voltage source inverter with the conventional three-phase voltage source inverters are presented. The simulation results based on PLECS software verify a good performance of the proposed inverter. Finally, a laboratory prototype based on a TMS320F280049 DSP is developed and experimental tests are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed three-phase inverter topology.

This article presents a digital integrated circuit for digital scalar space-vector pulse width modulation in a vector-controlled induction motor drive. All of the blocks, including input stage, calculation, read-only memory, sector decide, sector change, triangular estimation, voltage generator, and voltage transformation vector, are realized in a digital scalar space-vector pulse width modulation integrated circuit as a simple, convenient, high-speed, high-integration and low-cost solution. In the proposed digital scalar space-vector pulse width modulation chip, a feedback trigger signal is utilized to mitigate the problem of asynchronicity, and a four-bit fine tuner is employed to alleviate oscillation at low frequency.

Multiphase optimal injection PWM with dual carrier frequency to reduce current THD

Multiphase voltage source inverter drives have recently applied to various industrial applications for variable speed motor drives. Both space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) and discontinuous PWM (DPWM) are commonly used modulators. Under the three-phase setting, it is well known that SVPWM is preferred for small modulation indices, whereas DPWM is better for large modulation indices. However, little detailed discussions on multiphase setting are reported. Further, for phase number higher than 5, no explicit instructions on how to select between SVPWM and DPWM to reduce current total harmonics distortion (THD). This study developed a generalised method to select either SVPWM or DPWM under different reference amplitudes and angles. The method can be easily extended to general N-phase settings. Firstly, a generalised expression of PWM harmonic flux which is proportional to current distortion is derived. Second, by selecting the modulator that corresponds to minimum rms harmonic flux for every carrier period, optimal injection pulse-width modulation (OIPWM) is constructed. The theoretical analyses indicate that the harmonics distortion of OIPWM is greatly improved comparing with conventional SVPWM. A five-phase inverter drive built for experiments verifies the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed OIPWM.

space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) and carrier-based PWM (CBPWM) of eight-switch three-phase inverters (ESTPIs) which are the post-fault reconfigured topologies for the three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter with an open-circuit fault in a leg are introduced. On the basis of the PWM regular sampling method, the modulating functions of CBPWM which are equivalent to SVPWM of ESTPIs are derived, therefore the relationship between SVPWM and CBPWM of ESTPIs is revealed. The validity of the theoretical analysis is verified by experimental results.

This paper describes the problem of energy efficiency of hybrid wind and diesel generating systems with MPPT-based control algorithms supplying mineral resources exploitation sites. Possible solutions to this problem were investigated and exclusion of DC/DC-converter between DG and DC-bus as a main loses source in un-optimal regimes was suggested. The ability of generators to operate with variable speed in order to optimize fuel consumption for variable electric load is achieved through variation of DC-link voltage. Stabilization of output AC voltage is realized by means of autonomous inverter control system with space-vector pulsewidth modulation.

In recent years, non-conventional sources of energy such as wind and solar have gained increased attention as viable means of power generation. This paper discusses a hybrid scheme consisting of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind energy system and photovoltaic panels which are integrated with a battery to store extra energy when available and to meet additional power requirement during shortage. The PV panel supplies the battery through a SEPIC converter for maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The PMSG supplies the battery through a boost converter which regulates the output. The outputs of the wind and photovoltaic systems share a common DC link through which the total power from the hybrid system is fed to a three-phase load using an inverter implementing space-vector pulse-width modulation (SV-PWM). The controller modeled in MATLAB/Simulink software is simple and is implemented through real-time simulation using dspace board.

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms are used to force photovoltaic (PV) modules to operate at their maximum , power points for all environmental conditions. In artificial neural network (ANN)-based algorithms, the maximum power points are acquired by designing ANN models for PV modules. However, the parameters of PV modules are not always provided by the manufacturer and cannot be obtained readily by the user. Experimental measurements implemented in the overall PV system may be used to obtain the ANN dataset. One drawback of this method is that the generalization ability of the neural network usually degrades and some data reducing the effectiveness of the network may exist. A genetic algorithm can be used to automatically select the important data among all the inputs, resulting in a smaller and more effective dataset. In our study, a genetic algorithm is used to improve the MPPT efficiency of a PV system with induction motor drive by optimizing the input dataset for an ANN model of PV modules. A variable frequency volts-per-Hertz (V/f) control method is applied for speed control of the induction motor, and a space-vector pulse-width modulation (SV-PWM) method is used to operate a 3-phase inverter. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the validation of the method.
