One of the tasks of scholars and scientists is to highlight the values of the cultural heritage, a great patrimony that all the new generations should be acknowledged. One of the aspects that should be explored besides the construction restoration of all the historical buildings, especially Opera theatres, is the acoustics. This article deals with the acoustic investigation performed in relation to the Teatro Grande of Brescia. The outcomes have been analyzed by following both the standard requirements stated in ISO 3382-1 and by creating an overlay video that shows a real-time impulse response (IR). This latest innovative aspect calls the attention to the interactions existing between the sound waves and the construction elements of the room's boundaries. This additional value has been realized by using a multichannel spherical array microphone, that allows a control of the sound propagation through the space. The authors of this paper introduce also a brief history of the Teatro Grande of Brescia, including the description of the architectural characteristics of this important historical building.

The archaeological discovery of the Roman Amphitheatre of Pompei started in 1748 represents another great award besides the other treasures brought to light by the scientists. Built in the Regio II, located in the south-east corner of the city, the Amphitheatre of Pompei is one of the arenas most preserved that we have. This paper deals with the acoustic measurements by using a spherical array microphone. The analysis is centered on a video overlay graphically showing the impulse response (IR). The sound intensity has been represented by contour levels overlapped to a 360 degrees image taken at the receiver position. This methodology illustrates an alternative way to detect the direction of arrival of the sound rays other than the surfaces of the construction that participate to reflect the sound.

The Italian Opera theatres have been deeply studied throughout the centuries, with a particular attention given by the scholars during the last decades, when the latest generation of technology allow the possibility to investigate such cultural heritage more deeply. The results obtained by the acoustic survey have been analyzed in accordance with the standard requirements referenced for building acoustics. The city of Pompei has been always subject to archaeological works during the last decades. However, the theatre that has been discovered in the urban environment has one of the best preserved cavea, although it lacks most of the scaenae frons. This paper deals with the acoustic measurements undertaken to study the behavior of this important monument through the main acoustic parameter outlined by ISO 3382-1, and to detect the direction of the early and late reflections characterizing the reverberation. This latest approach enabled the possibility to investigate the sound propagation thought the space with the employment of a multichannel spherical array microphone. The recorded impulse response (IR) has been analyzed in such a way to create an overlay video, given by the overlapping of the 360 degrees image taken at the receiver position with the contour level of the sound decay after the impulse.

The court royal theatre of Caserta is part of the construction complex called Reggia, a palace that has been commissioned by the King of Naples Charles III. This important architecture, considered a cultural heritage site protected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has been studied by the authors in such a way that the main acoustic parameters outlined in ISO 3382-1 are herein represented in combination with some shots of the impulse response (IR) recorded during the survey. As an alternative way of extending the acoustic study of any room, this methodology is recommended for understanding the construction elements that contribute to the early and late reflections when the volume in discussion is very elaborated as an Opera theatre. A brief overview of the historical background of this marvelous architecture is also given.

As such, the assessment of the main acoustic parameters in line with the standard requirements outlined in ISO 3382-1 indicate an overall acoustic more suitable for speech, to be slightly "deaf" for music. Besides the evaluation of the acoustic parameter, the analysis has been extended to the interaction of the sound waves against the boundaries of the room. This outcome has been possible by the employment of a spherical array microphone that can detect the directions of the sound rays from any angle. The authors of this paper illustrate also a brief history of the Celebration theatre, including the description of the architectural features that characterize this building.
