Augmented reality and spatial information manipulation is being increasingly used as part of environment integrated form factors and wearable devices such as head-mounted displays. The integration of this exciting technology in many aspects of people's lives is transforming the way we understand computing, pushing the boundaries of spatial Interfaces into virtual but embedded environments. We think that the HCI community is ready for a renewed discussion about the role of Augmented Reality within spatial Interfaces. With this SIG we want to expand the discussion related to spatial Interfaces and the way they impact interaction with the world in two areas. First, we aim to critically discuss the definition of spatial Interfaces and outline the common components that build such interfaces in today's world. Second, we would like the community to reflect on the path ahead and focus on the potential of what kind of experiences can spatial Interfaces achieve today.

AI3D Desktop is an XR app platform that lets anyone create 3D models using AI in an intuitive and delightful way by using skeuomorphic design motifs. Innovations include: Creating virtual humans and other AI3D objects using a hybrid desktop draft-to-reticle approach, AI3D user-created-content e-commerce as a virtual catalog, and aiQuery and sQuery language layers in RealityScript to easily chain AI models and spatial computing HCI elements together (also, as represented as gears and cogs!). We showcase such approaches for all AI3D methods: text to 3D, text to image to 3D, image to 3D, 3D to 3D - and also multimodal AI3D methods for text/image/3D to scene, and text/image/3D to interactive 3D. The current implementation is for Apple Vision Pro.

With the on-chip resources largely increased, the computing paradigm of modern architectures are much different from traditional ones. The relation between temporal computing and spatial computing is getting more and more intricate. In this paper, a coarse-grained reconfigurable architecture is proposed named as programmable dataflow computing architecture: ProDFA. With both fine-grained control ability and long-term control logic, ProDFA implements coarse-grained reconfigurability and fine-grained controllability, which brought both flexible programmability and high efficiency. A case study on block ciphers is done. A specific reconfigurable structure for block ciphers is designed and several mainstream block ciphers are mapped and evaluated. The experimental results show the high efficiency of the specific reconfigurable structure.

We present CRF-Gradient, a self-healing gradient algorithm that provably reconfigures in O(diameter) time. Self-healing gradients are a frequently used building block for distributed self-healing systems, but previous algorithms either have a healing rate limited by the shortest link in the network or must rebuild invalid regions from scratch. We have verified CRF-Gradient in simulation and on a network of Mica2 motes. Our approach can also be generalized and applied to create other self-healing calculations, such as cumulative probability fields.

We introduce an innovative approach to reducing cognitive stress by integrating two non-pharmacological therapeutic strategies, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) videos and Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRV-BF), within Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). The research demo presents a virtually created mental health therapist situated within a virtual therapy office who will deliver evidence-based CBT, which has been found to be efficacious in reducing stress. The simulated evidence-based HRV-BF strategy also aims to reduce stress by engaging the Parasympathetic Nervous System. The aim is to demonstrate the potentiality of advanced immersive technologies to deliver engaging and efficacious stress management interventions. The findings from this research will be pivotal in evaluating the comparative effectiveness of CBT and HRV-BF across the VR, AR, and MR environments.

The communicational and computational demands of neural networks are hard to satisfy in a digital technology. Temporal computing addresses this problem by iteration, but leaves a slow network. spatial computing only became an option with the coming of modem FPGA devices. The paper provides two examples. First the balance between area and time is discussed on the realization of a modular feed-forward network. Second, the design of real-time image processing through a Cellular Neural Network is treated. In both examples, reconfiguration can be applied to provide for a natural and transparent support of learning.

By blurring the boundaries between digital and physical realities, Augmented Reality (AR) is transforming consumers' perceptions of themselves and their environments. This review demonstrates AR's capacity to influence psychology and behavior in profound ways. We begin by providing a concise introduction to AR, considering its technical, practical, and theoretical properties. Next, we showcase a multi-disciplinary set of recent studies that explore AR's impact on psychological processes and behavioral outcomes. We conclude by offering a selection of potential future research directions designed to deepen our understanding of the psychological and behavioral implications of AR experiences.

Mixed reality (MR) provides users with novel affordances that allow them to overlay and experience reality in various visual manifestations. However, existing works mainly focused on using MR to augment a user's present, which does not exhaust the full potential of contextual MR. In this paper, we empirically explore MR-Driven Near-Future Realities, a future multimodal MR experience that can overlay semantically-related augmentations within a user's everyday life to allow them to preview, manipulate, and reflect on a near-future reality. We investigated this concept during a VR-based empirical study to understand users' perceptions and opinions about MR-Driven Near-Future Realities. The results showed that users were positive about the concept of MR-Driven Near-Future Realities and were capable of eliciting near-future realities in various simulated real-world manifestations, but more demanding scenarios negatively affected their experience and task completion performance. Our goal is to spark meaningful and critical discussions about the use of MR-Driven Near-Future Realities to preview possible near-future realities in everyday life.

Haptic feedback has been an important contributor to enabling more immersive and dexterous experiences in virtual worlds. Yet achieving realistic haptic feedback is not trivial. Take tactile feedback for example, our skin can sense complex sensations (e.g., vibration, pressure, temperature) with high sensitivity and wide range. Attempting to render all these complex sensations has led to very realistic haptic devices, but, these are necessarily cumbersome and obstructive (e.g., haptic gloves that need to cover the whole hand with several actuators). While this might be fine in VR where users only interact with virtual objects, this is completely at odds with every other interface paradigm, such as Augmented Reality or Mixed Reality, in which users not only interact with virtual objects but also with their surroundings (e.g., tool manipulation). We argue that to make haptic devices available to use beyond VR, we must design for the integration between the haptic device and the real world. To this end, we demonstrate new approaches to engineering haptics devices that allow users to feel haptics from the real world and augment haptics to the real world. With this shift in haptics, we believe that in the future, users will be able to enjoy the benefits of haptics without needing to choose between either only a virtual world with haptics or a real world without-instead, experiencing haptics seamlessly across both real and virtual worlds.

In recent years, a number of different strands of research on self-organizing systems have come together to create a new ""aggregate programming"" approach to the engineering of distributed systems. Aggregate programming is motivated by a desire to avoid the notoriously intractable ""local to global"" problem, where the system designer must predict how to control individual devices to achieve a collective goal. Instead, the designer programs an abstraction of the collective, composing ""building block"" primitives from a library of special cases where the local-to-global problem is already solved. Unifying a number of the proposed aggregate programming approaches is the notion of a ""computational field"" that maps each device in the field's domain to a local value in its range. This concept was originally developed for spatial computers, in which communication and geometric position are closely linked, but can support effective aggregate programming of many non-spatial networks as well. A mathematical foundation for such approaches has been formalized recently with a minimal ""field calculus"" that appears to be an effective unifying model, covering a wide range of aggregate programming models, both continuous (e.g., geometry-based) and discrete (e.g., graph-based). On this foundation, restricted languages can ensure various desirable properties such as scalability, self-stabilization, and robustness to perturbation. By building up a sufficiently broad collection of composable ""building block"" distributed algorithms, it is possible to enable simple and rapid development of complex distributed systems that are implicitly scalable and resilient. The ultimate aim of this line of research is to make the programming of robust distributed systems as simple and widespread as single-processor programming, thereby enabling widespread increases in the reliability, efficiency, and democracy of our technological infrastructure.
