Recent developments in lattice-based post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) algorithms are drawing attention to their implementation on low-power edge devices. Number theoretic transform (NTT) is the core mathematical operation of the lattice-based PQC algorithm. Hence, a power-efficient NTT accelerator is the fundamental building block of edge device-friendly PQC implementation. This paper presents SANTA, the world's first accelerator for NTT computation on AMD's Versal (R) Adaptive System on Chip (ASoC), an edge-application-oriented spatial computation system. We leverage ASoC's single instruction multiple data (SIMD) feature in our proposed accelerator design by vectorizing the NTT computation to achieve speed gain. We further accelerate the NTT computation by utilizing the two-dimensional spatial computing architecture of the ASoC platform to distribute the workload for parallel processing. We also evaluate the runtime and power consumption of our proposed NTT accelerator on AMD's Versal VCK190 evaluation board. Our results show that edge deployable spatial accelerators can significantly improve performance over traditional CPUs. For 4096-point NTT, SANTA demonstrates 2.8x speed gain over the state-of-the-art CPU implementation. We have published this work's open-source codes at https://***/SPIRE-GMU/ACAP_NTT.

Mixed Reality (MR) offers opportunities to greatly improve remote collaboration, given its ability to understand and reason about the spatial environment and to output multi-sensory feedback. Passthrough camera access, which is essential for MR applications to reason about the surrounding, is now available on major MR devices such as Microsoft's HoloLens 2 and Apple's Vision Pro. However, how to comfortably share our spatial environment to MR applications becomes an ever-more important question to address, given the wide variety of sensitive visual information it contains. In this paper, we present spatialPrivacy, a framework that offers spatial control through indoor localization techniques and access control policies configured over digital replicas of the real-world space.

spatial computing could change our interaction with the physical world, yet development tools still largely apply to outdated methods, representing 3D objects with 2D text in code editors. This discrepancy makes the programming of spatial applications more complicated. PhyOOP, our Physical Object-Oriented Programming Environment, trying to solve this issue by capturing object states through camera feeds for direct code insertion and attaching executable snippets to objects for camera-triggered actions. The user study, involving 16 participants, suggests that PhyOOP is easy-to-use and has potential applications in various domains.

A challenge in spatial computing considering markerless Augmented Reality is to anchor virtual objects relative to a physical space so that objects positions are stable across different tracking and augmented reality devices. This process must be stable in conditions that distinct devices can identify a real space by different strategies and that later the virtual objects appear in the same absolute location. This will also enable user to remotely edit an augmented environment using as reference a real environment. The goal of this research project is a platform that allows to remotely edit an augmented reality scenario referenced in a space previously digitized by a point cloud scan. Editing augmented environments allows users to add new virtual objects in a previously scanned physical space context remotely, enabling a new experience for the user who is interacting in augmented reality locally. A functional prototype of a desktop editor and a mobile application was developed that allows the visualization of environments remotely edited for Augmented Reality. Tests and simulations showed the feasibility of the proposed solution.

We propose CLP(QS), a declarative spatial reasoning framework capable of representing and reasoning about high-level, qualitative spatial knowledge about the world. We systematically formalize and implement the semantics of a range of qualitative spatial calculi using a system of non-linear polynomial equations in the context of a classical constraint logic programming framework. Whereas CLP(QS) is a general framework, we demonstrate its applicability for the domain of Computer Aided Architecture Design. With CLP(QS) serving as a prototype, we position declarative spatial reasoning as a general paradigm open to other formalizations, reinterpretations, and extensions. We argue that the accessibility of qualitative spatial representation and reasoning mechanisms via the medium of high-level, logic-based formalizations is crucial for their utility toward solving real-world problems.

This project attempts to challenge the sensory hierarchy and accessibility within immersive technologies, questioning the cognitive capabilities of the human brain.

Fog and Mobile Edge computing are promising paradigms aimed at bringing cloud-like functionality at the edge of the network, close to end users and IoT devices, hence complementing the offer of traditional cloud computing, which is based on powerful but distant data centers. A notable, specific thread of research explores so-called edge-clouds, i.e., small clouds emerging from the combination of resources of proximate edge-devices, whose goal is to provide on-demand storage and computation power to nearby users. In order to support the engineering of such edge computing ecosystems, in this paper we describe an approach for coordinating resources and computations in edge-clouds that assumes connectivity only to nearby devices (abstracting from the concrete communication technology) and tolerates unreliability by self-adaptation to device failure, mobility and withdrawal. Most notably, we delineate a decentralized, self-organizing, spatial approach that works by dynamically partitioning the system into areas, each one governed by an elected manager, and setting up downstream and upstream coordination flows from managers to peripheral nodes (i.e., workers and users) and vice versa. We provide an implementation schema in the SCAFI framework for aggregate programming and evaluate a basic request scheduling scenario through simulation.

An essential characteristic of brains in intelligent organisms is their spatial organization, in which different parts of the brain are responsible for solving different classes of problems. Inspired by this concept, we introduce spatial Genetic Programming (SGP) - a new GP paradigm in which Linear Genetic Programming (LGP) programs, represented as graph nodes, are spread in a 2D space. Each individual model is represented as a graph and the execution order of these programs is determined by the network of interactions between them. SGP considers space as a first-order effect to optimize which aids with determining the suitable order of execution of LGP programs to solve given problems and causes spatial dynamics to appear in the system. RetCons are internal SGP operators which enhance the evolution of conditional pathways in SGP model structures. To demonstrate the effectiveness of SGP, we have compared its performance and internal dynamics with LGP and TreeGP for a diverse range of problems, most of which require decision making. Our results indicate that SGP, due to its unique spatial organization, outperforms the other methods and solves a wide range of problems. We also carry out an analysis of the spatial properties of SGP individuals.

We introduce spatial Tuples, an extension of the basic tuple-based model for distributed multi-agent system coordination where (a) tuples are conceptually placed in regions of the physical world and possibly move anchored to a mobile computational device, (b) the behaviour of standard Linda coordination primitives is extended so as to depend on the spatial properties of the coordinating agents, tuples, and the topology of space, and (c) the tuple space can be conceived as a virtual layer augmenting physical reality. Motivated by the needs of mobile augmented-reality applications, spatial Tuples explicitly aims at supporting space-aware and space-based coordination in agent-based pervasive computing scenarios. This paper presents the coordination model, its formalization as a process algebra, a library of patterns of coordination it enables, and a discussion of application scenarios, challenges, and open issues for future works. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Composable continuous-space programs for robotic swarms

Programmability is an increasingly important barrier to the deployment of multi-robot systems, as no prior approach allows routine composition and reuse of general aggregate behaviors. The Proto spatial computing language, however, already provides this sort of aggregate behavior programming for non-mobile systems using an abstraction of the network as a continuous-space-filling device. We extend this abstraction to mobile systems and show that Proto can be applied to multi-robot systems with an actuator that turns a vector field into device motion. Proto programs operate on fields of values over an abstract device called the amorphous medium and can be joined together using functional composition. These programs are then automatically transformed for execution by individual devices, producing an approximation of the specified continuous-space behavior. We are thus able to build up a library of simple swarm behaviors, and to compose them together into highly succinct programs that predictably produce the desired complex swarm behaviors, as demonstrated in simulation and on a group of 40 iRobot SwarmBots.
