Temporal-spatial characteristics of park green space spatial structure and competitive relationship: A multidimensional perspective based on stand spatial structure

A well-organised park green space (PGS) spatial structure would provide multiple socio-ecological benefits, while promoting the optimisation of urban spaces. However, current research lacks a conceptual definition, effective analytical methods, and dynamic assessments of it. This study constructs a multidimensional framework for the PGS spatial structure, both internally (different types of PGS) and externally (PGS with other different types of urban functional space [UFS]). Taking Nanjing, China, as an example, the PGS spatial structure and its competitive relationship are quantified using the stand spatial structure parameter (SSSP) and Hegyi competition index. We quantify the spatial structure-including the average value of the SSSP (uniform angle index [W], dominance index [U], and mingling index [M]), the stand spatial structure comprehensive evaluation index (FSS), and the proportion of each class. Competitive relationships include competitive intensity and patterns. The findings demonstrate that: (1) The layout differentiation degree of the internal and external PGS has increased;the area difference and type mixing degree has decreased;and the external spatial structure is superior to the internal structure-although less stable, overall. (2) External space dominates PGS competitive relationships, with reduced competitive intensity influenced by residential, commercial service, and traffic spaces. Internal space is primarily influenced by city gardens, which intensifies internal competition. (3) The FSS effectively regulates the PGS spatial structure by integrating W, U, and M, thereby reducing competitive intensity internally and externally. These findings broaden the analytical perspective of PGS, offering a scientific foundation for the efficient allocation of urban spaces.

Customizing solid electrolyte interphase with bilayer spatial structure to mitigate swelling towards long-term life lithium battery

The swelling behavior and stability in solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) have been proved to determine the battery cycle life. A high swollen, unstable SEI shows a high permeability to electrolyte, which results in the rapid battery performance degradation. Here, we customize two SEIs with different spatial structures (bilayer and mosaic) by simply regulating the proportion of additive fluoroethylene carbonate. Surprisingly, due to the uniform distribution of dense inorganic nano-crystals in the inner, the bilayer SEI exhibits low-swelling and excellent mechanical properties, so the undesirable side reactions of the electrolyte are effectively suppressed. In addition, we put forward the growth rate of swelling ratio (GSR) as a key indicator to reveal the swelling change in SEI. The GSR of bilayer SEI merely increases from 1.73 to 3.16 after the 300th cycle, which enables the corresponding graphite||Li battery to achieve longer cycle stability. The capacity retention is improved by 47.5% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C. The correlation among SEI spatial structure, swelling behavior, and battery performance provides a new direction for electrolyte optimization and interphase structure design of high energy density batteries. SS-BEV: multi-camera BEV object detection based on multi-scale spatial structure understanding

BEV (Bird's Eye View) object detection based on multiple cameras has become a mainstream paradigm in the field of autonomous driving. However, we have identified that many existing methods perform poorly when detecting extremely large or small objects. To address this issue, this paper proposes a new framework for multi-camera BEV detection called SS-BEV. First, we designed a more expressive feature extraction module, A-WBFP, which integrates parallel atrous convolutions and weighted bidirectional feature pyramid blocks into the backbone network using a cascaded approach. This helps prevent the loss of small object information in deeper network layers and enhances the receptive field, thereby producing feature maps enriched with contextual information. We then introduce the MORD module, which leverages the accurate depth information from radar point clouds to improve the model's spatial structure understanding for both large and small objects. By learning the relative depth between internal structures of the objects and selected reference points, a corresponding loss function is constructed to supervise the final detection performance. SS-BEV outperforms the baseline model on the challenging nuScenes validation set with a 2.1-point improvement in NDS detection score. On the nuScenes test set, it achieved detection accuracies of 66.1% and 22.3% mAP for obstacles and construction vehicles, respectively, surpassing some methods based on multi-camera and LiDAR fusion.

Soil depth exerts greater effect on bacterial community than spatial structure in Longmenshan fault zone

The diversity patterns and drivers of soil microbial communities across spatial distances have been extensively investigated over the recent years. However, whether microbial communities in surface and subsurface soils showed an identical spatial distribution pattern at a small regional scale has not been fully confirmed. For this, we investigated the linkage between soil water content (SWC), pH as well as nutrient contents and soil bacterial diversity and communities in different soil layers in the Longmenshan fault zone in Sichuan Province, China. Our investigation indicated that surface soil bacterial communities were positively correlated with SWC and pH (P < 0.05), whereas those in the subsurface correlated with soil organic carbon and its fractions (P < 0.05). Bacterial community co-occurrence network structures differed significantly across soil layers. Compared to subsurface soils, surface soils had more nodes, larger network diameters, and longer average paths. The keystone species belonged to Rokubacteriales in the surface, and in the subsurface soil, they belonged to Chryseobacterium, while no keystone species were found in the subsoil. spatial distance showed a smaller effect (4%-7%) on community structure, indicating that various soil factors represent key regulatory factors for bacterial community shifts. Collectively, soil depth showed a considerably higher effect than spatial distance on soil bacterial community composition and network properties in Longmenshan fault zone, with key species differing across soil layers. These results could provide an essential basis for further investigation of microbial functions in soil ecosystem heterogeneity and maintaining soil health.

Analyzing spatial structure and low-carbon development considering criteria interactions: Evidence from Chinese urban agglomerations

The spatial structure of urban agglomerations (SSUA) has been shown to substantially influence low-carbon development (LCD). To examine the impact of SSUA on LCD, in this study, SSUA was comprehensively measured using concentration, coupling coordination, and centrality. This was followed by an evaluation of LCD considering multiple related criteria and their interactions. Finally, the impact of SSUA on LCD was analyzed using a two-way fixed effects model and a geographically and temporally weighted regression model. Based on data from 17 urban agglomerations (UAs) in China, the following results were obtained: (1) UAs in southeastern coastal areas typically exhibit superior LCD performance (0.138-0.279) compared to UAs in China's northwest (0.129-0.203). (2) A one-unit increase in concentration is associated with a 0.262-unit increase in LCD, while a one-unit increase in coupling coordination is associated with a 0.007-unit increase in LCD. (3) In most UAs, centrality had a more variable impact, evolving from positive to negative, and then back to positive. These findings inform urban planning strategies for LCD across diverse UAs.

Can regional polycentric spatial structure narrow the urban-rural income gap? Evidence from China

Purpose - Polycentricity has become a crucial spatial development strategy. This paper aims to clarify the impact and mechanism of polycentric spatial structure on the urban-rural income gap, provide better countermeasures to narrow it and make development suggestions for cities of different scales. Design/methodology/approach - Based on the panel data of Chinese cities from 2010 to 2019, this paper empirically examines the specific impact of polycentric spatial structure on the urban-rural income gap by utilizing a two-way fixed effects model. Findings - The results show that the polycentric spatial structure is favorable for reducing the urban-rural income gap, and upgrading the industrial structure and improving transportation infrastructure are important mechanisms. Moreover, the role of polycentric spatial structure is more significant in large cities. However, in small and medium-sized cities, the role of polycentric spatial structure is not significant. Research limitations/implications - The limitations of this study include two main aspects. One is that this paper only analyzes the mediating effect of industrial structure and transport infrastructure, and we do not examine other mechanisms. The second is that due to data availability, this paper uses data from 2010 to 2019, and the research period can be further extended in future studies. Practical implications - This study has policy implications for building a polycentric city network and also provides insights into the planning of cities of different scales. Social implications - The polycentric spatial structure is important for narrowing the urban-rural income gap, especially in large cities. Improvement of transportation infrastructure and upgrading of industrial structure are important mechanisms. However, the polycentric spatial structure does not play a significant role in small and medium-sized cities. Thus, the polycentric spatial structure is not suitable for every kind of city. Can The spatial structure of a Metropolitan Area Bring Regional Economic Benefits? - A Case Study of Melbourne

The metropolitan area is a manifestation of a particular stage of urbanization. This study establishes a general development law for metropolitan areas, which consists of three stages: origin, expansion, and maturity. To better understand the economic benefits of these development strategies, we selected the Melbourne metropolitan area as a case study. By quantifying the spatial structure and visualizing the spatial layout of the Melbourne metropolitan area, the results reflect the characteristics of its development mode. On the basis of the index calculation and econometric analysis, this study then evaluates the impact of this kind of spatial structure on the economic benefits of the entire area. Our findings indicate that: 1) the population and industry in Melbourne are dispersed;2) the current spatial structure of the Melbourne metropolitan area enhances regional economic benefits;3) the spatial structure of the Melbourne metropolitan area has the potential to further cultivate its dominant industries, allowing the area to become a competitive regional pole in Australia;4) the financial sector can promote local economic gains, investment, and job creation;5) benefits from Melbourne may spill over to other regions in Victoria State, eventually forming an urban agglomeration that includes Geelong.

Examining Cross-city Travel Behaviour and its Associated spatial structure Using Dockless Bike-sharing Data

Bike-sharing provides a convenient means of transport for short-trip travellers and is considered an efficient way to solve the first-and-last-mile problem. However, existing studies have paid little attention to cross-city travel in the bike-sharing context, or to its potential to reveal the spatial structure of cities. This paper considers two types of cross-city travel behaviour: the first involves a traveller taking a single trip from one city to another (Type I);and the second refers to a traveller making two consecutive trips in two cities, suggesting that a cross-city trip between these two cities has occurred (Type II). Using dockless bike-sharing big data from Zhejiang Province (China), we adopt a network-based approach to examining cross-city travel behaviour and its associated spatial structure. Our results show that it is less common for cyclists to undertake cross-city travel than to only travel within a single city, and that it is more difficult to travel across prefecture-level cities in comparison to county-level cities. spatial structure varies greatly between different city levels and for different types of cross-city journeys. The county-level cross-city patterns identified 10 spatial communities, some of which show inconsistencies between their community-based and administrative boundaries. This study could help to advance our understanding of the characteristics of cross-city travel behaviour and its associated spatial structure. It also provides some useful implications for policy-making and practical operations.

This paper introduces a novel method for assessing the safety of post-construction large-span spatial structures. Initially, a brief overview is provided of the operating principles and measurement equipment associated with airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. Subsequently, a methodology for extracting one-dimensional geometric models from point cloud data is described. The proposed safety analysis method is then applied to the retractable roof of the Shenzhen Gymnasium, with a comparison made between two approaches: the LiDAR-based method and the consistent imperfection mode method, in terms of their consideration of the impact of initial geometric imperfections on structural mechanical properties. The research findings reveal that the one-dimensional geometric models extracted from airborne LiDAR measurements can accurately reflect the real-world structural imperfections and can be regarded as geometric digital twins of the structures. In comparison with the consistent imperfection mode method, finite element models based on airborne LiDAR measurement technology offer a superior representation of the real performance of the structures.

Intelligent prediction approach of spatial structure response and performance deterioration by integrating spatiotemporal deep learning and digital twins

Global spatial structures face potential safety hazards as they age and are subjected to external influences. As traditional response and performance deterioration prediction methods have exhibited limitations when dealing with long time-series data and spatially complex features, this study proposed a novel approach integrating spatiotemporal deep learning (SDL) and digital twins (DT) to address this challenge. An SDL framework driven by component strain data from physical monitoring was proposed to predict the structural responses. Three timeseries deep learning frameworks were proposed to predict ambient trends, which were input in a DT model to output the structural responses driven by virtual future ambient data. Then errors of both are fused through a proposed deep neural network to improve the final prediction accuracy. Finally, deterioration prediction was achieved by comparing the deviations between the final predicted performance responses and those calculated in real time from the initial structure's DT replica, both in the same ambient conditions. The proposed approach, verified through a long-term health monitoring experiment of a scaled cable dome structure, demonstrated high precision, with the maximum mean error of cable strain deterioration prediction only 10.45 mu epsilon. It can provide a new intelligent solution for the safe operation and maintenance of spatial structures.
