The importance of the emotion information in human speech has been growing in recent years due to increasing use of natural user interfacing in embedded systems. speech-based human-machine communication has the advantage of a high degree of usability, but it need not be limited to speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities. Emotion recognition in uttered speech has been considered in this research to integrate a speech recognizer/synthesizer with the capacity to recognize and synthesize emotion. This paper describes a complete framework for recognizing and synthesizing emotional speech based on smart logic (fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks). Time-domain signal-processing algorithms has been applied to reduce computational complexity at the feature-extraction level. A fuzzy-logic engine was modeled to make inferences about the emotional content of the uttered speech. An artificial neural network was modeled to synthesize emotive speech. Both were designed to be integrated into an embedded handheld device that implements a speech-based natural user interface (NUI)

Evaluation of the effectiveness of auditory speeding warnings for commercial passenger vehicles -a field study in Wuhan, China

Auditory warning of speeding behaviour is considered to be one of the most effective methods developed to reduce the accidents involving commercial passenger vehicles. Facing a complex, mixed traffic condition and a lot of risky driving behaviours in China, commercial passenger vehicles need an effective speeding warning system to reduce the high accident rate. Although many automobile manufacturers have installed the speeding warning systems on their vehicles, the styles of these auditory speeding warning systems are different, and few studies has been found to investigate the effectiveness of the auditory speeding warning systems for commercial passenger vehicles. Therefore this study is intent to fill such a gap to evaluate the effectiveness of three different sound-based speeding warning styles. In this study, thirty drivers qualified for driving the commercial passenger vehicles are recruited and then asked to drive for four 80-km field trips on an expressway in Wuhan, China. Driving behaviour is logged by a monitoring system and is monitored by two observers during these trips. Study results showed that 'beep warning' is most effective and 'break-sound warning' is the least. Basically, the results of this study could provide a good reference for development of future voice-based speed warning systems in China.

Design patterns in object-oriented frameworks

Developing interactive software systems with complex user interfaces has become increasingly common. Given this trend, it is important that new technology be based on flexible architectures that do not require developers to understand all the complexities inherent in a system. Object-oriented frameworks provide an important enabling technology for reusing both the architecture and the functionality of software components. But frameworks typically have a steep learning curve since the user must understand the abstract design of the underlying framework as well as the object collaboration rules or contracts-which are often not apparent in the framework interface-prior to using the framework. In this article, the author describes her experience with developing an object-oriented framework for speech recognition applications that use IBM's ViaVoice speech recognition technology. Design patterns help to effectively communicate the internal framework design and reduce dependence on the documentation.

VoiceXML and the W3C speech interface framework

VoiceXML is a markup language for creating voice-user interfaces. It uses speech and telephone touchtone recognition for input and prerecorded audio and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) for output. It's based on the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C?s) Extensible Markup Language (XML) and leverages the Web paradigm for application development and deployment. By having a common language, application developers, platform vendors, and tool providers all can benefit from code portability and reuse.

Voice-controlled human-computer interface for the disabled

A voice-controlled human-computer interface has been designed that enables severely handicapped individuals to operate a computer. This system consists of six main blocks: the keyboard and the mouse layouts;the D6106 speech recogniser;the headset incorporated with a microphone and two mercury switches;the keyboard circuit and the mouse circuits;the mouse control circuit;and the microcontroller. A prototype system has been built and tested.

Audiovisual speech processing - Lip reading and lip synchronization

We have reported activities in audiovisual speech processing, withemphasis on lip reading and lip synchronization. These research resultshave shown that, with lip reading, it is possible to enhance thereliability of audio speech recognition, which may result in a computerthat can truly understand the user via hand-free natural spoken languageeven in a very noisy environments. Similarly, with lip synchronization,it is possible to render realistic talking heads with lip movementssynchronized with the voice, which is very useful for human-computerinteractions. We envision that in the near future, advancement inaudiovisual speech processing will greatly increase the usability ofcomputers. Once that happens, the cameras and the microphone may replacethe keyboard and the mouse as better mechanisms for human-computerinteraction

A professional storyteller infers emotion from the text of her tale, conveys emotion in the telling, and responds to the attachment and involvement of her audience. The characters in a video game are storytellers, but they are storytellers with a peculiar emotional handicap. Computers need not be as emotionally handicapped as they currently are: emotion recognition and emotional speech synthesis are now reliable enough to be useful in limited-domain real-world applications.

VoiceXML is the most popular language for specifying audio user interfaces for Web applications, if you have ever called an automatic telephone system to reserve an airline ticket, to trade stock, or to reach an individual or department of a large company, then you have likely used a VoiceXML application. VoiceXML is part of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) speech interface languages (SILs), which are extended markup languages (XML) and are widely used for developing applications that speak and listen to people. In what follows, we discuss the main features, architecture, and applications of SILs with a focus on the VoiceXML language

speech and driving - solution or problem?

Besides travel-related information ( speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and so on), driver-related information ( navigation devices, telephone calls, email and so on) is now an increasing feature of modern-day driving. In order to process this information and still be able to drive safely at the same time, an information management system in the vehicle would seem to be necessary. speech interfacing offers a good solution as verbal interactions use resources that are not needed when driving. However, in practice, experiments have shown that verbal interactions may distract the driver from the primary task. It is thus crucially important that verbal interactions are designed in such a way that the 'driving' task remains the focus of attention for the driver.
