We present an application for the acoustic detection and tracking of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) using a spherical harmonic multiple signal classification technique implemented for a commercially available spherical array. Preliminary results obtained during field testing demonstrate the ability of the array system to simultaneously and accurately track up to two UAVs in flight, and provide insight on detectable target range, and robustness against wind and environmental noise. Additionally, the effectiveness of this technique is investigated in the presence of simulated UAV self-noise to understand the feasibility of such a spherical array as an acoustic sensing payload on an auditory UAV.

5G new radio (NR) provides features such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) services and massive machine-type communications (mMTC). Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is an essential technique to enable these features, using antenna arrays with a sufficient number of elements to generate accurate and high-gain beams to desired user locations. In newer services, various forms of mobile devices are expected to appear in diverse locations, and beamforming need to accommodate such directional diversification. However, utilization of existing array structures has a limitation in transmitting signals to arbitrary receiver positions in the three-dimensional space. Therefore, a new type of array capable of forming accurate beams in isotropic fashion is desired, and the corresponding transmission strategies need to be identified. In this paper, the construction and utilization of the three-dimensional uniform spherical array (USA) are investigated. Beamforming vectors and the basis codebook for such arrays are defined, and characteristics of the generated beams are analyzed via comparison to the beams produced by conventional arrays. array parameters to minimize the inter-beam interference are determined, and multiuser transmission performance is evaluated using the proper configuration of the array. We also apply the radiation pattern to the antenna elements to present the sum-rate performance in practical settings.

Direction of arrival estimation using the spherical microphone array usually requires a search in the whole 3-dimensional space, hence computationally demanding. This work presents a machine learning approach to sectorizing the 3-dimensional space, as an intermediate step for direction-of-arrival estimation using spherical microphone array. A new feature based on the outer product of spherical harmonic vectors was proposed for the classification. This spherical harmonic matrix nominally offers lower dimensionality compared to the commonly used covariance matrix of received data. The dimension of the input matrix was further reduced using the neighborhood component analysis. The extracted features were then used to train a support vector machine (SVM), 2-layer multilayer perceptron (MLP) and a convolutional neural network (CNN) for classification purposes. The results show that the models were able to classify the spherical sector with up to 90% accuracy for all models and number of sectors under consideration. Also, the MLP and CNN trained with simulated samples were able to accurately classify samples from real data that were not included in training samples.

Performance analysis of narrowband beamforming using fully and partial adaptive beamformers with a spherical array

This research proposes an improved narrowband partial adaptive beamformer analysis using a proposed spherical array. Comparison between the fully and the partial adaptive beamformers is given. The study is performed by investigating performance parameters like the beamformer output signal-to-noise ratio and the beamformer output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio both in the steady state and along adaptation. Furthermore, computational complexity and convergence speed of the proposed sensor arrangement are also analyzed and examples are given. The results demonstrate that this beamformer considerably reduces the number of complex operations and features faster convergence speed.

Firstly, based on the spherical phase mode transformation, a spherical harmonic(SH) domain covariance matrix model of the spherical array is presented as multiple measurement vectors, where the atomic norm minimization approach is extended to SH domain and is applied for covariance matrix denoising. Then the spherical ESPRIT method is used to DOA estimation. Unlike the conventional approaches, the proposed method not only requires no prior knowledge of the noise statistic property, but also has the capability of dealing with the coherent signals. Simulations show the outperformance of out method compared with the conventional ones.

This paper mainly studies on the spherical array imaging with spatial matched filtering. The azimuth resolution of circular trace scanning synthetic aperture radar is calculated. The factors affecting the azimuth resolution of the spherical array imaging are discussed, and a method of amplitude weighting is proposed to restrain the side lobe. Finally, the imaging effect of two kinds of array elements distribution is compared.

Two-dimensional(2D)layered materials with layer-number dependent properties are promising candidates for next-generation noble-metal-free electrocatalytic ***,the main group metal chalcogenides(MMCs)used for this purpose are rarely ***,we report the controlled growth of indium selenide(In Se)with a novel morphology(semispherical array)on a silicon substrate and its application in hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).The formation of the spherical InSe is explained with a vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism,in which the distribution and size of the spheres could be facilely tuned by the reaction *** InSe semispherical array was demonstrated as more efficient catalyst for HER than the flake-like 2D InSe counterparts,originating from the fully exposed InSe spherical surface with abundant adsorbing sites and the high crystalline quality for electron *** work provides a controlled synthesis way of the layered In Se with a distinct spherical morphology used for the electrocatalysis applications and could be extended to other main group metal chalcogenides.

A proposed method to improve the WER of an ASR system in the noisy reverberant room

This paper proposes a novel approach to reducing the word error rate (WER) of an auto-matic speech recognition (ASR) system in a noisy reverberant room. This research utilizes the integration of beamforming, dereverberation, and ambisonic. Based on the demonstrated formula, the proposed system synthesizes the signal of desired points on the sphere surface from a combination of 32 signals of a uniform spherical microphone array (USMA). This method uses the non-parametric sound field reproduction technique in the spherical harmonics domain (SHD). Also, the suggested new geometry determines the place of the desired points. In addition to improving the dereverberation performance, the proposed method also improves the performance of the beamformer in terms of directivity factor (DF) and white noise gain (WNG). The results show that objective metrics such as PESQ are significantly improved, and the WER of the Kaldi and the WeNet ASR systems is reduced considerably.
