Many smart city lighting applications require information about the location of light poles, in particular about which light poles are neighbors along the street with respect to passing traffic. This paper addresses the problem of deriving the topology of light poles in a smart city, relying only on the data gathered from Passive Infrared Sensors attached to the light poles. A statistical algorithm is presented and evaluated based on a data set gathered from a real deployment in a residential area.

Curtailment prediction and efficient demand response (DR) strategy selection challenge the effectiveness of developing smart grid applications. Here we present solutions to both challenges, taking a bottom-up approach to demonstrate that curtailment at the equipment-level determined based on the equipment mechanical properties and models can be used to efficiently estimate curtailment and to optimize human comfort during a DR event across a subset of energy consumers. We focus on a controlled microgrid environment present on the University of Southern California campus and address two HVAC oriented DR strategies: variable frequency drive and global temperature reset. Strong correlation between equipment and building level consumption was found to exist in less than half the cases, showing that building level consumption can be successfully used as well for those scenarios. Several fast heuristics aiming to optimize human comfort during equipment level DR proved to be successful and showed that the best method depends on the DR strategy. Finally, relying on the equipment specifications and consumption models for our analyses circumvents the common challenges associated with statistical and machine-learning algorithm approaches that rely on large amounts of historical data.

Seismic Damage Detection for a Masonry Building Using Aftershock Monitoring Data

The problem of detecting structural damage by exploiting vibration signal measurements produced from earthquake excitation is addressed in this work. Following the Wenchuan earthquake of 12 May 2008, a residential masonry building was selected for instrumentation with accelerometers by the Harbin Institute of Technology. This building had been damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake. It represents a rare case of an instrumented building that has been previously damaged, thus serving as a full-scale benchmark model to evaluate structural identification and damage detection methods. More than 20 earthquakes were recorded by the system after the building was instrumented. For detecting the structural damage, a vibration-based damage detection algorithm for structures under earthquake excitation is introduced in this paper. This method is based on a residual associated with subspace-based modal identification, with global chi(2)-tests built on this residual. This method makes effective use of non-stationary and limited duration earthquake excitation, handles the uncertainties, and further detects the structural damage. The results obtained from these structural responses and earthquake excitations are reported using both identification and damage detection methods.

Regular on-site testing is an elementary means to obtain real-time data and state of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) of electronics systems. Nowadays, there is a lot of measured EMC data while the application of the data is insufficient. So we put forward the concept of EMC model synthesis. To carry out EMC data mining with measured electromagnetic data, we can build or modify models and synthesize variation rules of electromagnetic parameters of equipment and EMC performance of systems and platforms, then realize the information synthesis and state prediction. The concept of EMC reliability is brought forward together with the definition and description of parameters such as invalidation rate and EMC lifetime. We studied the application of statistical algorithms and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in model synthesis. Operating flows and simulation results as well as measured data are presented. Relative research can support special measurement, active management and predictive maintenance and replenishment in the area of EMC.

A statistical algorithm was developed for the damage fault diagnosis and prognosis tool and the present work focuses on the experimental validation. The oxide scale growth experiments using laboratory samples under thermal cycling simulate the hot section turbine blade coating failures. The experimental steps, oxide thickness data measurement, collection and sampling procedures are discussed. Three data samples each from two groups under different thermal cycling conditions are considered. The data are subjected to randomness check, preprocessing, rank sum test etc. The validation is carried out with 15 possible combinations for analysis. Consistent with the mean thickness distribution for the samples in two groups, the statistical algorithm for damage and anomaly diagnosis yields expected results.

A simple and efficient algorithm for genome-wide homozygosity analysis in disease

Here we propose a simple statistical algorithm for rapidly scoring loci associated with disease or traits due to recessive mutations or deletions using genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping case-control data in unrelated individuals. This algorithm identifies loci by defining homozygous segments of the genome present at significantly different frequencies between cases and controls. We found that false positive loci could be effectively removed from the output of this procedure by applying different physical size thresholds for the homozygous segments. This procedure is then conducted iteratively using random sub-datasets until the number of selected loci converges. We demonstrate this method in a publicly available data set for Alzheimer's disease and identify 26 candidate risk loci in the 22 autosomes. For more exact navigation and positioning on the navigation systems, this paper discusses the improvement of statistical algorithms based on fuzzy knowledge with a brand-new theory. The improved fusion algorithms based on Bayesian theory and fuzzy methods on the track recognition are also given, respectively. However, this paper mainly makes a comparison of the improved new algorithms and two old algorithms for track recognition. The computer simulation shows the validity and feasibility of two improved algorithms. At the same time, the simulation results show that the overall performance of two improved algorithms for the track recognition all is better than that of the probabilistic algorithms. Based on the experiments in the dense target environment, the correct average recognition rate of statistical algorithms is 66.96% at the highest;that of the improved new algorithm based on fuzzy knowledge is 77.98%, that of the Bayesian fusion algorithm is 86.75%, however, that of the fuzzy fusion algorithm can be 90.14%. Bio-optical observations of about 50 stations were carried out in June, 2005 in Bohai, the major area of which belongs to Optical Case II water. The experiment acquired apparent optical properties, inherent optical properties, biological, chemical and water quality data, in accordance with NASA Ocean Optics Protocols. Using these data, a statistical inversion model of chlorophyll a concentration (chl-a) of Bohai was developed based on MERIS bands configuration. The inversion model has the performance of 29.83% average relative error (ARE) and 16.45% root mean square error (RMSE) between the measured and inversed data.

In order to get a reasonable simultaneity coefficient rather than one offered by the regulations and the design handbook, a statistical algorithm to computer the simultaneity coefficient based on the real-time data of the practical electrical network is presented in this paper. This algorithm uses the data of the typical consumers' load power from power measurement system to compute the simultaneity coefficient. This kind of simultaneity coefficient can reflect characteristic of the practical electrical network. The algorithm of simultaneity coefficient can be applied to the power system planning and designing, the load forecast and the distribution automation.

TOWARD AN OPTIMAL algorithm FOR OVARIAN-CANCER SCREENING WITH LONGITUDINAL TUMOR-MARKERS

Stored samples from women in the Stockholm screening study were reassayed for CA125II (Centocor, Malvern, PA) and OVX1. The postmenopausal women older than age 50 without ovarian cancer were randomly split into a training set to develop a screening test based on longitudinal marker levels and a second set to validate the test. The CA125II data from each woman is summarized by the slope and intercept from a linear regression of log(CA125II) on time since first sample. The slope versus the intercept for the training set and the ovarian cancer cases formed a bivariate scatter plot. A curve was drawn on the scatter plot that separated most of the women with ovarian cancer from all other women;it delineated a screening test. The specificity of this test was examined on the validation set with a specificity of 99.8%. Bayes' theorem was used to calculate the risk of ovarian cancer (ROC) based on the intercept, slope, and assay variability. It is important to account for assay variability because it can produce large slopes over short periods of time, The maximum risk, which identified 83% (5 of 6) of the ovarian cancers detected within a year of last assay, was applied as a test to the training set and confirmed a high specificity of 99.7%. With this specificity and sensitivity, the ROC algorithm using the CA125II assay has an estimated positive predictive value of 16%, substantially greater than the positive predictive value based on a single assay. Further study is planned to confirm the sensitivity of this approach.
