Computing statistical functions in Wired Networks

For applications in which a node is interested in a function of the data generated at different sources, in-network computation is a promising approach to improve the network performance. In this paper, we study the problem of computing the first M moments of the data using in-network computation in an arbitrary wired communication network. We are interested in finding a routing and queue management strategy that maximizes the data rate at which the sources could generate new data. We first propose a very simple tractable flow model that computes an upper bound on the maximum data generation rate that could be supported in a given network for a given M. To validate the tightness of this upper bound and to provide a practical feasible solution, we then propose a heuristic strategy involving the generation of multiple trees and effective queue management that achieves data generation rates close to this upper bound. This cross-validates the tightness of the upper bound and the goodness of our heuristic strategy. Finally, using the flow model, we provide engineering insights on what in-network computation can achieve.

Application of statistical functions to the numerical modelling of ceramic foam: From characterisation of CT-data via generation of the virtual microstructure to estimation of effective elastic properties

This paper illustrates a numerical methodology to quantify and recreate the microstructure of a ceramic foam using statistical functions and physical descriptors (together referred to as microstructure descriptors). The microstructure descriptors were employed to characterize a real foam material obtained from X-ray tomography (CT) scans. The statistical functions were further used to determine an appropriate size of a statistical volume element (SVE) within the foam sample to be further used in numerical determination of effective elastic properties. A ranking method was also developed to reduce the number of realizations of SVEs used in this calculation. Further, a novel reconstruction procedure was developed to synthesize artificial microstructure of the foam material that had the same microstructure descriptors as the real foam sample. Effective elastic properties of these artificial microstructures were determined as well. Comparison of these properties with experimental results showed that the statistical functions can be used to minimize the computational effort required for determining effective elastic properties of real microstructures. Further, the reconstruction methodology generates microstructure that matches the real microstructure not only in terms of its microstructural descriptors but also in terms of the effective elastic material properties.

Identification of protein coding genes in genomes with statistical functions based on the circular code

A new statistical approach using functions based on the circular code classifies correctly more than 93% of bases in protein (coding) genes and non-coding genes of human sequences. Based on this statistical study, a research software called 'Analysis of Coding Genes' (ACG) has been developed for identifying protein genes in the genomes and for determining their frame. Furthermore, the software ACG also allows an evaluation of the length of protein genes, their position in the genome, their relative position between themselves, and the prediction of internal frames in protein genes. This is most noticeable in the presence of "big data", i.e., of data that are heterogeneous, and come from several sources, which makes their volume increase very rapidly. In this paper, we study popular and well-known statistical functions generally applied to data analysis, and assess their performance using our own implementation (DataIP) 1, MatLab and R. We show that DataIP outperforms MatLab and R by several orders of magnitude and that the design and implementation of these functions need to be rethought to adapt to today's data challenges.

Private Set Intersection (PSI) enables two parties, each holding a private set to securely compute their intersection without revealing other information. This paper considers settings of secure statistical computations over PSI, where both parties hold sets containing identifiers with one of the parties having an additional positive integer value associated with each of the identifiers in her set. The main objective is to securely compute some desired statistics of the associated values for which its corresponding identifiers occur in the intersection of the two sets. This is achieved without revealing the identifiers of the set intersection. In this paper, we present protocols which enable the secure computations of statistical functions over PSI, which we collectively termed PSI-Stats. Implementations of our constructions are also carried out based on simulated datasets as well as on actual datasets in the business use cases that we defined, in order to demonstrate practicality of our solution. PSI-Stats incurs 5x less monetary cost compared to the current state-of-the-art circuit-based PSI approach due to Pinkas et al. (EUROCRYPT'19). Our solution is more tailored towards business applications where monetary cost is the primary consideration.

The number of deaths due to flash floods in China has increased sharply in recent decades. Therefore, a quantitative assessment of loss of life at the potentially affected areas is highly recommendable, which can improve the strategies of disaster risk mitigation and reduction. Numerous papers published to date have focused on human vulnerability to river floods but seldom to flash floods because of the lack of data on loss of life or flood intensity matched with loss of life. This research aims at reconstructing the July 2016 flash flood event by combining hydro-hydraulic models with post-flood surveys to obtain the data of flood intensity and then developing human vulnerability curves for flash floods through statistical functions. The hydrological model HEC-HMS was used to obtain the hydrograph of the July 2016 flash flood, which was evaluated using the flow data obtained from references. Subsequently, the hydraulic model FLO-2D was used to reconstruct the July 2016 flash flood event to obtain the flood characteristics (e.g., water depth, flow velocity, depth-velocity product, and impact force). The evaluation of FLO-2D was carried out using post-flood surveys defining maximum flooded extent and flood depths. Then, statistical functions were used to fit the relationship between the flood characteristics and mortality calculated through post-flood surveys. The results show that the simulated peak discharge (548 m(3)/s) of the July 2016 flash flood for Taitou catchment was close to the estimated peak discharge (540 m(3)/s) by the existing literature. Likewise, the FLO-2D model showed a good performance in reconstructing the flash flood event (FitA = 80.89%, RMSE = 0.21, NSE = 0.89), indicating that the flood characteristics outputting from FLO-2D model can be able to develop the human vulnerability curves for flash floods. In this work we reexamine quantum electrodynamics of atomic electrons in the Coulomb gauge in the dipole approximation and calculate the shift of atomic energy levels in the context of Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji formalism by considering the variation rates of physical observable. We then analyze the physical interpretation of the ordering of operators in the dipole approximation interaction Hamiltonian in terms of field fluctuations and self-reaction of atomic electrons, discussing the arbitrariness in the statistical functions in second-order bound-state perturbation theory. On-line dynamic security contingency screening using artificial neural networks

On-line dynamic security analysis has now become realistic due to advances in computer technology and algorithms for security assessment. Details of pattern recognition based electro, mechanical stability screens which have been implemented within a dynamic security assessor are presented. Use of statistical functions of features is shown to overcome the dimensionality problem of applying pattern recognition techniques to large power systems. The low computational cost of this approach coupled with efficient operation has resulted in a significant step towards achieving full online dynamic security assessment.
