In this paper, we consider precoding for hybrid millimeter wave (mmWave) systems with dual-polarized arrays, which are known to allow more antennas to be packed into the same physical space. In practice, the precoder is typically designed based on periodic feedback of channel state information (CSI) from the receiver and the feedback is not instantaneous. We design the precoders using statistics of the user channels, without instantaneous channel information. We show that, given the channel statistics, channel covariance matrices can be derived in a closed-form. The closed-form lends itself to the design of statistical precoders. As the statistical precoder is designed based on statistics, the performance is less sensitive to fading caused by user movement. Simulations over realistic channels show that when mobile speed exceeds 1.5 km/hr, statistical precoding outperforms a precoder that is designed using periodic full CSI feedback for a commonly used feedback period.

This letter proposes a graph neural network (GNN)-based framework for statistical precoder design that leverages model-based insights to compactly represent statistical knowledge, resulting in efficient, lightweight architectures. The framework also supports approximate statistical information in frequency division duplex (FDD) systems obtained through a Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based limited feedback scheme in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low pilot overhead. Simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework over baseline methods, including stochastic iterative algorithms and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) codebook-based approaches, particularly in systems with low pilot overhead.

statistically-Aided Codebook-Based Hybrid precoding for Millimeter Wave Channels

In this paper, we propose practical yet effective statistically-aided codebook-based hybrid precoding schemes for massive multiple-input multiple-output systems in millimeter wave bands. Particularly, we develop novel low-overhead hybrid precoding algorithms for selecting the baseband digital and radio frequency analog precoders from statistically skewed DFT-based codebooks. The proposed algorithms aim at maximizing the spectral efficiency based on minimizing the chordal distance between the optimal unconstrained precoder and the hybrid beamformer and maximizing the signal to the interference noise ratio for the single-user and multi-user cases, respectively. We investigate the performance of the proposed algorithms by considering the mutual information of the analog beamforming procedure (the common stage among the proposed algorithms) as a performance evaluation metric. We derive lower and upper bounds on the mutual information of the channel given the proposed algorithms. Moreover, we show that the performance gap between the lower and upper bounds depends heavily on how many DFT columns are aligned to the largest eigenvectors of the transmit antenna array response of the millimeter wave channel or equivalently the transmit channel covariance matrix when only statistical channel knowledge is available at the transmitter. Then, we show that the proposed algorithms are asymptotically optimal as the number of transmit antennas M goes to infinity and the millimeter wave channel has a limited number of paths P , i.e., P < M. Further, we verify the performance of the proposed algorithms numerically where results illustrate that the spectral efficiency of the proposed algorithms can approach that of the optimal precoder in certain scenarios. Furthermore, these results show that the proposed hybrid precoding schemes have superior spectral efficiency performance while requiring lower (or at most comparable) channel feedback overhead in comparison with the prior art.

Hybrid MIMO-OFDM Beamforming for Wideband mmWave Channels Without Instantaneous Feedback

In this paper, we consider the design of statistical multiple-input-multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) beamformers for millimeter wave (mmWave) channels. The transmitter designs the subcarrier beamformers based on the statistics of the channel, without instantaneous channel information. To overcome the radio frequency (RF) limitation in mmWave application, the subcarrier beamformers are implemented in a hybrid structure, which imposes constraints on the design of subcarrier beamformers. We analyze the unconstrained statistical subcarrier beamformers using spectral analysis of the subcarrier channels. The analysis shows that, for each subcarrier channel, the optimal statistical beamformer is approximately a linear combination of optimal statistical beamformers for some appropriately defined narrowband single-cluster subchannels. The result suggests a design of the subcarrier beamformers that can be readily implemented in a hybrid structure. Furthermore, a hybrid design for the receiver is proposed based on the concept of vector quantization. Simulations are given to show that the use of a hybrid beamforming structure incurs a minor degradation in transmission rate. With three RF chains, the performance is close to that of all digital statistical beamforming.

Rate Splitting in FDD Massive MIMO Systems Based on the Second Order Statistics of Transmission Channels

In this work, we present new results for the application of rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) to the downlink (DL) of a massive multiple-input-multiple-output system (MIMO) operating in frequency-division-duplex (FDD) mode. We propose a statistical precoding design relying on the channels' second-order information when one-layer RS is implemented. The advantage of the statistical precoding lies in simplifying the precoder design by basing the optimization objective on the slowly-varying channel covariance matrices instead of the fast-changing instantaneous channel estimates. To this end, we use the so- called bilinear precoder, which was shown in Neumann et al. (2018) and Ben Amor et al. (2020) to have limited performance in the high SNR regime due to the imperfect channel state information (CSI) available at the base station (BS). We formulate the DL throughput maximization problem based on a widely used lower bound on the achievable sum rate and propose an iterative approach to solve the underlying optimization problem. Numerical results demonstrate the benefit of implementing one-layer RS. Furthermore, the proposed iterative approach achieves excellent results in terms of spectral efficiency compared to the state-of-the-art techniques.

We consider the problem of multicast transmission in cooperative cellular systems, where a base station (BS) aims at conveying a common message to a set of user equipments (UEs) that are also connected with each other via device-to-device (D2D) links. Assuming statistical channel knowledge at the BS, we design a two-phase scheme that exploits multi-antenna transmission at the BS and D2D communications between the UEs to achieve a non-vanishing multicast rate when the number of UEs grows large. This represents a non-trivial extension of our previous work, which is restricted to the case of instantaneous channel knowledge at the BS (and is thus impractical for dense networks). Finally, we study the scaling of the resulting multicast rate as a function of the number of UEs and BS antennas for different practical scenarios.
