This paper proposes a framework for stereo image coding with effective representation of geometry in 3D scenes. We propose a joint sparse approximation framework for pairs of perspective images that are represented as linear expansions of atoms selected from a dictionary of geometric functions learned on a database of stereo perspective images. We then present a coding solution where atoms are selected iteratively as a trade-off between distortion and consistency of the geometry information. Experimental results on stereo images from the Middlebury database show that the new coder achieves better rate-distortion performance compared to the MPEG4-part10 scheme, at all rates. In addition to good rate-distortion performance, our flexible framework permits to build consistent image representations that capture the geometry of the scene. It certainly represents a promising solution towards the design of multi-view coding algorithms where the compressed stream inherently contains rich information about 3D geometry.

State-of-the art approaches towards stereo image coding exploit inter-view redundancy by employing block-matching methods for disparity estimation and compensation. However, the efficiency of these methods is affected by mismatched areas, due to occlusions, brightness variations, or perspective distortion between objects of the two views. In this paper we present a new prediction scheme for stereo image coding, that combines an implicit disparity estimation method, with an adaptive least squares (LS)-based filtering. The Multidimensional Multiscale Parser image coding algorithm was used to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed scheme. Experimental results demonstrate the advantage of LS prediction in stereo image coding. Furthermore, the rate-distortion performance of the MMP based stereo encoder is well above that of the state-of-the-art H. 264/AVC stereo Profile, especially at medium and high bit rates.

In this paper, we propose a modified overlapped block matching (OBM) scheme for stc:reo image coding. The OBM scheme has been introduced in video coding, as a promising way to reduce blocking artifacts by using multiple vectors for a block, while maintaining the advantages of the fixed size block matching framework. However, OBM has its own limitations, even though it overcomes some drawbacks of block matching schemes. For example, to estimate an optimal displacement vector (DV) field, OBM requires complicated iterations. In addition, OBM does not always guarantee a consistent DV field, even through several iterations, because the estimation considers only the magnitude of the prediction error as a measure. Therefore, we propose a modified OBM scheme, which allows both consistent disparity estimation and efficient disparity compensation, without several iterations. In the proposed scheme, the computational burden resulting from iterations is reduced using "open-loop" coding, which decouples the encoding into estimation and compensation. The consistent disparity estimation is performed by using a causal MRF model and a half-pixel search, while maintaining (or reducing) the energy level of disparity compensated difference frame. The compensation efficiency is improved by interpolating the reference image in half pixel accuracy and by applying OBM in part. To prove the efficiency of the proposed OBM scheme, we provide some experimental results, which sinew that the proposed scheme achieves higher PSNR, about 0.5-1 dB, as well as better perceptual quality, at a fraction of the computation, as compared to a conventional OBM.

A binocular stereo system for images coded by Visual Pattern image coding (VPIC) is presented and evaluated. The use of VPIC for stereo vision applications is motivated by the capability of its coding primitives to reflect meaningful physical properties of projected real-scene surfaces: high-information edge regions and uniform regions. An algorithm for spatial matching of VPIC primitives is proposed. It involves the solution of a complex optimization problem satisfying VPIC-related constraints. A dense disparity map is obtained and then used, together with one of the VPIC coded images of the stereo pair, to predict the second stereo image. The proposed stereo system allows a very high compression of the overall stereo information. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance of both stereo VPIC matching and predicting algorithms in test images. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Disparity compensation (DC) and transform coding are incorporated into a hybrid coding to reduce the code-rate of multiview images. However, occlusion and inaccurate disparity estimations (DE) impair the performance of DC, especially in spaceborne images. This paper proposes an adaptive disparity-compensation scheme for the compression of spaceborne multiview images, including stereo image pairs and three-line-scanner images. DC with adaptive loop filter is used to remove redundancy between reference images and target images and a wavelet-based coding method is used to encode reference images and residue images. In occlusion regions, the DC efficiency may be poor because no interview correlation exists. A rate-distortion optimization method is thus designed to select the best prediction mode for local regions. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can provide significant coding gain compared with some other similar coding schemes, and the time complexity is also competitive. In this paper, we propose novel algorithms for stereoscopic image coding based on the hierarchical decomposition of stereo information. The proposed schemes, based on wavelet transform and zerotree quantization, are endowed with excellent progressive transmission capability and retain the option for perfect reconstruction of the original image pair. Experimental evaluation shows that the resulting methods produce superior results when compared with other algorithms for stereo image coding. This is achieved without introducing blocking artifacts and with the valuable additional convenience of the production of embedded bitstreams.

Multiresolution block matching methods for both monocular and stereoscopic image sequence coding are evaluated. These methods are seen to drastically reduce the amount of processing needed for block correspondence without seriously affecting the quality of the reconstructed images. The evaluation criteria are the prediction error and the speed of the algorithm for motion, disparity, and fused motion and disparity estimation, in comparison with the full search (exhaustive) method. A new method is also proposed based in multiresolution techniques, for efficient coding of the disparity or the displacement vector field.

The paper proposes an adaptive disparity map modelling and coding method based on Delaunay triangulation. It provides an efficient and progressive format to represent disparity map information. Experiments showed that the method is promising and extendable. This paper proposes a mesh-based representation method for the disparity map of stereo images. The proposed method is designed to concentrate mainly on applications of view interpolation and stereo image compression. To obtain high image quality in the view interpolation and compression of stereo images, we formulate the view-interpolation error and prediction error. In the formulation, the view-interpolation and prediction errors depend not only on the accuracy of the disparity map, but also on the gradient of the stereo images. The proposed representation method for the disparity map is based on a triangular mesh structure, which minimizes the formulated interpolation and prediction errors. The experimental results show that the proposed method yields higher quality view-interpolated images and also has better performance in stereo image compression than the conventional methods.

Source coding of multi-view image sequences is investigated. Two different frameworks are considered. The first one is a bidirectional predictive coding scheme, in which the displayed (intermediate) frames can be instantaneously decoded given the coded furthest right and left images (I-frames). The second one is a unidirectional predictive coding scheme, in which the central frame is an I-frame and the remaining frames are coded based on this frame. Both frameworks can overcome problems related to occlusion, are compatible with current and proposed image and video coding standards, consider the special indexing characteristics of multi-view sequences, and can be implemented in applications where the display device has a small buffer. The actual coding is performed using the subspace projection technique (SPT), a locally adaptive incomplete transform approach, which incorporates disparity compensation and residual coding in a unified adaptive transform approach. The transformation matrix is equivalent to a projection operation and is determined using the local cross-correlation characteristics. Several design issues in generating the adaptive transforms and experimental results are presented.
