The reconstruction of 3D visual data from 2D images is an important task in image processing. For the estimation of depth in the scene, a stereoscopic image pair is necessary. When dealing, with coding and transmission of such stereoscopic image data, single image coding is not suitable here. The disparity, i.e. the local displacements in the image pair, can be used for an efficient coding approach. To ensure good quality, lossless coding is applied and compared. In order to the specific content of the disparity map, compression gains higher than factor 10 are achievable. At the receiver, the stereoscopic image pair can be reconstructed having only one original image and the disparity map. An interlaced image is produced to ensure the persistence of the 3D impression.

stereoscopic imaging technologies are seen as the next generation of visual presentation, improving the quality of experience of the viewer. It uses two different sequences acquired from two regular cameras or from a regular camera with an additional specific depth camera. This means that the size of data is at least doubled. Thus, the coding process becomes very crucial. In this framework, we propose a stereoscopic coder based on visual properties. The matching of two images is computed by a binocular energy model based on the simple and complex cells functions allowing the fusion of both retinal images in the visual cortex. Mathematical functions were used to reproduce the behavior of these cells particularly complex wavelet transform (CWT) and bandelet transform. Our coder output is a disparity map, a residual image and the reference image. The innovative part of this work lies in a matching technique based on the binocular energy. The results are presented through comparative curves with one of the most known coder in literature.

The digital cinema is very challenging because it represents tomorrow way of capturing, post-producing and projecting movies. Specifications on this media are provided by DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) founded by the Hollywood Majors. Among the specifications we can find issues about resolution, bitrate, JPEG2000 compression Moreover, the market assumes that 3D could raise the turnover of cinema industry. The problem with is the availability of 2 streams (left and right) that double the amount of data and need adapted devices to decode and project movies. Cinema industry, represented by the stereoscopic group in SMPTE has expressed the need of having a unique master that combines two streams in one. This paper focuses on the study of the generation of a master with one of the streams and the embedment of the redundant information as metadata in JPEG2000 code-stream or MXF. The idea is to use the reference image in addition to some metadata to reconstruct the target image. The metadata represent the residual image and the contours description. Quality of reconstructed images depends on the compression ratio of the residual image. The obtained results are encouraging and the choice between JPEG2000 metadata embedding and MXF metadata still to be done.

In this work, a wavelet-based coding scheme for stereoscopic images is presented. The proposed scheme effectively integrates the coding of the disparity map in addition to the reference image. Hence, it first calculates the wavelet transform of the left and right images. A process for detecting an optimal scale for the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is then applied. The sub-bands of the last retained level of the DWT are then segmented into quadtree. The disparity map is obtained by studying the similarity between the dyadic squares belonging to the left image and those of the right image. This is achieved by minimizing an energy function defined on the spatial properties of the dyadic squares. Thus, the binocular compensation/suppression process allows at this stage to take advantage of the gap existing generally between the two views. Finally, the coefficients of the reference image, the residual image and the disparity map are encoded using a quantization step followed by an entropic coding. Of course, the target image is predicted using the aforementioned content. The experimental results of the proposed approach shows a good performance compared to the literature.

In this work, a bandelet-based coding scheme for stereo images is presented. The proposed scheme efficiently integrates the coding of the disparity map with the reference image. The disparity map is obtained via disparity estimation in a geometric similarity framework. The scheme first computes the bandelet transform of both left and right images. Consequently, each image is segmented into a quadtree where each dyadic square regroups pixels sharing the same geometric flow direction. Then, the disparity map is obtained by studying the geometric similarities between the dyadic squares of both images quadtrees. This is accomplished by the minimization of a cost measure function that is defined on the geometric properties of the quadtrees. Finally, the bandelet transform coefficients of the reference and residual images with the disparity map are encoded and transmitted in partitions (squares) which leads to lower entropy. The experimental evaluation of the proposed scheme shows beneficial performance over other stereoscopic coders in the literature.
