A novel day-ahead scheduling model to unlock hydropower flexibility limited by vibration zones in hydropower-variable renewable energy hybrid system

Giving full play to the flexibility of hydropower and integrating more variable renewable energy (VRE) is of great significance for accelerating the transformation of China's power energy system. For middle- to large-sized hydropower units, its irregular vibration zone (VZ) is a major factor affecting its flexibility, because VZs limits the power output and adjustment range. In the existing studies on hydropower unit commitment and flexibility scheduling, VZs only limits the output of hydropower units, while the impact on the flexibility adjustment ability of units is ignored. The hydropower flexibility in day-ahead scheme is overestimated, which increases the risk of system flexibility shortage causing power curtailment and load loss. In this study, a novel day-ahead scheduling model considering the flexibility limited by the VZs and the probability of flexibility shortage is constructed for the day-ahead generation scheme of hydropower-VRE hybrid generation system (HVHGS) to optimize the target load, VRE output and hydropower unit commitments. The impaction of the VZs on hydropower flexibility is firstly modeled by chance constraints and stochastic programming method. Moreover, a data-driven model based on machine learning and an efficient solving approach based on successive linear programming is carry out to describe the uncertainty of VRE output more realistically and ensure the timeliness of optimization scheme, respectively. The proposed model is applied to a real hydropower station in the Hongshui River Basin in China. In 16 representative scenarios, the proposed model can complete the optimization in an acceptable time, with a maximum of 444.57 s. Compared with the traditional interval optimization model, the proposed model effectively improves the flexibility supply capacity of hydropower in the day-ahead scheme. Traffic emergency vehicle deployment and dispatch under uncertainty

To manage traffic emergencies, cities require multiple types of traffic rescue vehicles, which need to be dispatched from various rescue stations dispersed throughout the city. A reasonable way of deploying the rescue vehicles must be determined given that the times and locations at which the traffic emergencies occur are uncertain. In this paper, we propose a two-stage stochastic programming approach to deploying multiple types of emergency vehicles in response to traffic accidents in the context of uncertainty. The first stage of the proposed model concerns decisions on the quantities of the different types of vehicles to be stocked at each rescue station. In the second stage, when the locations and accident rescue demands are realized in each scenario, the decision-making involves dispatch of the emergency vehicles to the traffic accidents. To solve the proposed model, we suggest a variable neighborhood search method. Using the road network of Jiading District, Shanghai, as an example, we perform numerical experiments to investigate the efficiency of the proposed method and the model validity. Some managerial implications are also outlined in the sensitivity analysis.

Three-Stage Optimization Model to Inform Risk-Averse Investment in Power System Resilience to Winter Storms

We propose a three-stage stochastic programming model to inform risk-averse investment in power system resilience to winter storms. The first stage pertains to long-term investment in generator winterization and mobile battery energy storage system (MBESS) resources, the second stage to MBESS deployment prior to an imminent storm, and the third stage to operational response. Serving as a forecast update, an imminent winter storm's severity is assumed to be known at the time the deployment decisions are made. We incorporate conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) as the risk measure in the objective function to target loss, represented in our model by unserved energy, experienced during high-impact, low-frequency events. We apply the model to a Texas-focused case study based on the ACTIVS 2000-bus synthetic grid with winter storm scenarios generated using historical Winter Storm Uri data. Results demonstrate how the optimal investments are affected by parameters like cost and risk aversion, and also how effectively using CVaR as a risk measure mitigates the outcomes in the tail of the loss distribution over the winter storm impact uncertainty.

The carbon capture-transportation-utilization (C-CTU) chain strengthens the coupling between terminal energy consumption and renewable energy resources (RES), achieving carbon emission reduction in power generation sectors. However, the dynamic operation of the C-CTU chain and the uncertainties induced by RES output pose new challenges for the low-carbon operation. To address above challenges, the nonlinear dynamic operation model of C-CTU chain is first proposed in this study. It is further incorporated into the day-ahead operation scheme of the electricity-carbon integrated system considering the stochastic nature of wind power. This scheme is treated as a two-stage stochastic integer programming (TS-SIP) problem with a mixed-integer nonlinear recourse. By means of the polyhedral envelope-based linearization method, this recourse is reformulated into its linear counterpart. To further improve the computational performance of classical decomposition algorithms, a novel Benders decomposition framework with hybrid cutting plane strategies is proposed to obtain better feasible solutions within a limited time. Simulations are conducted on two power system test cases with the C-CTU chain. Numerical results indicate that the engagement of C-CTU chain promotes the low-carbon economic operation of the power system. Also, the proposed decomposition algorithm shows a superior solution capability to handle large-scale TS-SIP than state-of-the-art commercial solvers. Mathematical Model for Multi Depot Simultaneously Pick Up and Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem with stochastic Pick Up Demand

In a classical vehicle routing problem (VRP), customer demands are known with certainty. On the other hand, in real-life problems, customer demands may change over time. Therefore, in the classical VRP, the assumption that customer demands are stochastic should be taken into account. To expedite consumer demands and minimize fuel use and carbon emissions, organizations must concurrently address client distribution and collection requirements. Customers' distribution requirements can be predicted, but it is impossible to predict in advance the product requirements they will send for recycling. Hence, in this study, a mathematical programming model is developed for the multi-depot simultaneous pick-up and delivery vehicle routing problem under the assumption that customers' picking demands are stochastic. However, there are non-linear constraints in the developed model. Thereby, firstly, the stochastic model is linearized, and then the effectiveness of the model is analyzed. The efficacy of the linearized model is ascertained by generating test problems. The study investigated the impact of varying reliability levels and the number of depots on the model. As a result of the sensitivity analysis, it was determined that by decreasing the reliability level, the solution time of the problems decreased and the number of problems reaching the best solution increased. In the study, 135 test problems were solved by changing the reliability level, and the best result was achieved in 105 of these problems within 7200 s. The increase in the number of depots both reduced the solution time of the problems and was effective in reaching the best solution for all solved test problems.

Goal programming approaches for coordinating flock collection in the poultry industry

We present deterministic and stochastic goal programming models for coordinating of flock collection activities in a poultry processing company. The aim is to develop weekly schedules that balance three goals: ensuring a steady workload in the processing facility, reducing processing defects due to weight differences, and fulfilling production targets of farmers, while satisfying logistical constraints. Two deterministic goal programming models are proposed: a weighted model that considers the collective interests of farmers, and a min-max model that prevents large deviations from the production target for any individual farmer. Furthermore, two-stage stochastic programming models are developed, in which forecasts of the average flock weights are uncertain. The proposed approaches are applied to a real case study in Nova Scotia (Canada). Numerical results show that, compared to the weighted models, the min-max models considerably reduce the maximum expected deviation from optimality without significantly increasing the gross deviation from production targets. Furthermore, the stochastic models led to substantial improvements over the deterministic ones, thus justifying the transition to a two-stage planning procedure. The proposed stochastic min-max model was also shown to outperform the current manual approach in terms of reducing the average weight spread between flocks collected on the same day.

A stochastic optimization procedure to design the fair aggregation of energy users in a Renewable Energy Community

Optimizing unit sizes and operation within a Renewable Energy Community (REC) can match intermittent renewable energy generation with variable user energy demands. These uncertain variables are often represented by pre-defined stochastic scenarios, without searching for the "best" scenarios and testing the optimization models with these scenarios. Moreover, little work both optimized RECs under uncertainty and distributed optimal life-cycle costs (investment and operation) among members. Thus, the objectives are: i) identifying the "best" set of stochastic scenarios of solar irradiance and user electricity demands and ii) assessing the accuracy of the "stochastic forecasts" of the total system costs and unit sizes, obtained by solving a stochastic programming model based on the "best" scenarios. The proposed novel procedure shifts the "present moment" back in time to split historical data into "past" and "future" periods used to identify the "best" scenarios and compare the "stochastic forecasts" with the utopic "perfect forecasts" based on the perfect knowledge of real data, respectively. The small errors between these forecasts in the optimal life-cycle costs (less than 2 %) and sizes (3-13 %) indicate good effectiveness of the suggested procedure. Also, the optimal life-cycle costs of "stochastic forecasts" are fairly distributed among users by applying the Shapley value mechanism.

A sample robust optimal bidding model for a virtual power plant

In many energy markets, the trade amount of electricity must be committed to before the actual supply. This study explores one consecutive operational challenge for a virtual power plant-the optimal bidding for highly uncertain distributed energy resources in a day -ahead electricity market. The optimal bidding problem is formulated as a scenario -based multi -stage stochastic optimization model. However, the scenario -tree approach raises two consequent issues-scenario overfitting and massive computation cost. This study addresses the issues by deploying a sample robust optimization approach with linear decision rules. A tractable robust counterpart is derived from the model where the uncertainty appears in a nonlinear objective and constraints. By applying the decision rules to the balancing policy, the original model can be reduced to a two -stage stochastic mixed -integer programming model and then efficiently solved by adopting a dual decomposition method combined with heuristics. Based on real -world business data, a numerical experiment is conducted with several benchmark models. The results verify the superior performance of our proposed approach based on increased out -of -sample profits and decreased overestimation of in -sample profits.

Infrastructure-planning models are challenging because of their combination of different time scales: while planning and building the infrastructure involves strategic decisions with time horizons of many years, one needs an operational time scale to get a proper picture of the infrastructure's performance and profitability. In addition, both the strategic and operational levels are typically subject to significant uncertainty, which has to be taken into account. This combination of uncertainties on two different time scales creates problems for the traditional multistage stochastic-programming formulation of the problem due to the exponential growth in model size. In this paper, we present an alternative formulation of the problem that combines the two time scales, using what we call a multi-horizon approach, and illustrate it on a stylized optimization model. We show that the new approach drastically reduces the model size compared to the traditional formulation and present two real-life applications from energy planning.

Tri-level scheduling of integrated electric vehicle parking lots and solar distributed generations in local and wholesale electricity markets

This study investigates a tri-level optimal market strategy for the integrated electric vehicle fleets and solar distributed generations (IEVSDG) to engage in the local electricity market (LEM) as a strategic price -maker. The distribution company (Disco) which operates the LEM, participates in the wholesale electricity market (WEM) to provide its consumers, is also a strategic price -maker. For this purpose, the IEVSDGs are integrated at the first level of the optimization problem, while the Disco operator and WEM operator form the second and third levels, respectively. In other words, Disco acts as an intermediary retailer that links the LEM (modelled by IEEE 69 -bus distribution system) to WEM (modelled by an IEEE 24 -bus transmission network). The study puts forward a novel solution strategy, where the second and third level problems are conjoined through the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. Moreover, the equilibrium point between the first level and this conjoined problem is achieved through the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). In a hybrid robust optimization (RO) and stochastic programming (SP) approach, the uncertain specifications, such as the arrival/departure times and daily travelled miles are modelled through the SP scenarios. On other hand, the RO was deployed to handle solar power forecasting uncertainties. Different case studies of dumb and smart charging were devised to evaluate the method. The outcomes show that the proposed three -level approach leads to 57.21% reduction in the LEM price, and 0.86% reduction in the WEM price. Furthermore, the smart charging strategy eliminated 105 MWh of load interruptions.
