The OpenSees software framework seeks to aid in this challenging task by letting earthquake engineers develop finite-element and finite-element-reliability applications for use in sequential, high-performance, and distributed processing environments.

Displacement-Based Seismic Assessment of Low-Height Confined Masonry Buildings

This paper presents a practical displacement-based evaluation procedure for the seismic assessment of low-height regular confined masonry buildings. First, the so-called Coefficient Method established in several FEMA documents is adapted to obtain rapid estimates of inelastic roof displacement demands for regular confined masonry buildings. For that purpose, a statistical study of constant relative strength inelastic displacement ratios of single-degree-of-freedom systems representing confined masonry buildings is carried out. Second, a nonlinear simplified model is introduced to perform pushover analysis of regular confined masonry buildings whose global and local behavior is dominated by shear deformations in the masonry walls. The model, which can be applied through the use of commercial software, can be used to establish the capacity curve of such buildings. Finally, the evaluation procedure is applied to a three-story building tested at a shaking table testing facility.

High-performance computing has brought about a renaissance in computational seismology and earthquake engineering. Researchers in both fields are using advanced numeric tools and high-fidelity numerical models synergistically to create rupture-to-rafters simulations. This end-to-end approach promises to significantly advance earthquake damage prediction, preparation, mitigation, and disaster response.

Smart road that warns its network manager when it begins cracking

One of the components of the fifth generation road is its capacity to communicate with its network manager in order to improve maintenance. The aim of the experimental instrumentation presented in this study is to monitor the evolution of characteristic damage in mixed structures: nonvisible cracks rising from the hydraulic base towards the coated pavement surface. The objective of the sensors is to be able to anticipate damage before it reaches the surface. As temperature is also being measured, it is possible to use this data to communicate with users concerning the potential risk of ice forming on the road. The first measurements have been compared with a theoretical model of the structure, and the continuous acquisition of signals will enable the network manager to monitor the behaviour of the road.

The use of statistical methods for anomaly detection has become of interest to researchers in many subject areas. structural health monitoring in particular has benefited from the versatility of statistical damage-detection techniques. We propose modeling structural vibration sensor output data using nonlinear time-series models. We demonstrate the improved performance of these models over currently used linear models. Whereas existing methods typically use a single sensor's output for damage detection, we create a combined sensor analysis to maximize the efficiency of damage detection. From this combined analysis we may also identify the individual sensors that are most influenced by structural damage.

Pavement crack detection network based on pyramid structure and attention mechanism

Automatic detection of pavement crack is an important task for conducting road maintenance. However, as an important part of the intelligent transportation system, automatic pavement crack detection is challenging due to the poor continuity of cracks, the different width of cracks, and the low contrast between cracks and the surrounding pavement. This study proposes a novel pavement crack detection method based on an end-to-end trainable deep convolution neural network. The authors build the network using the encoder-decoder architecture and adopt a pyramid module to exploit global context information for the complex topology structures of cracks. Moreover, they introduce a spatial-channel combinational attention module into the encoder-decoder network for refining crack features. Further, the dilated convolution is used to reduce the loss of crack details due to the pooling operation in the encoder network. In addition, they introduce a lovasz hinge loss function, which is suitable for small objects. They train the authors' network on the CRACK500 dataset and evaluate it on three pavement crack datasets. Among the methods they compare, their method can achieve the best experimental results.

Defect classification based on wavelet packet energy through pulsed alternating current field measurement technique

In this Letter, a wavelet packet energy-based algorithm is proposed to classify surface and non-surface slits through the pulsed alternating current field measurement technique. Wavelet packet decomposition is used to obtain the coefficient of each frequency band. The slit is classified as non-surface slit or surface slit according to the normalised energy of the first band. The quantification of the remaining ligament or depth of slits is performed using the entropy of the wavelet packet energy. The experiment results show that the non-surface and surface slits can be clearly classified. The entropy of a non-surface slit is linearly proportional to the remaining ligament, and the entropy of a surface slit is inversely proportional to slit depth.

Line-laser-based visual measurement for pavement 3D rut depth in driving state

This Letter develops a line-laser-based real-time visual measurement method to inspect pavement rut depths. The detection vehicle equipped with line-laser projector continuously sends, in its normal driving state, laser light onto the pavement, which is captured by a high-resolution camera on the vehicle, thus a sequence of pavement rut laser line images are created. The pavement rut laser line image is transformed to the convexity index image, in which the peak points of the pavement rut laser line are rapidly sought to obtain the rut laser curve with a single-pixel width. The relationship between pavement rut depth and the visual deformation value of measurement points on the rut laser curve is determined by the calibration blocks, and then the pavement three-dimensional (3D) rut depths can be automatically measured, 3D rut depth curves and 3D rut surface can be reconstructed. Some experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
