Aims and objectives: This study examines the acquisition of Differential Object Marking (DOM) in heritage Spanish children born in the USA and the potential role of structure complexity and chronological age. Design: Bilingual children were compared with monolingual children matched by age and long-term immigrants (children's parents) via an Elicited Production task. We elicited the distribution of personal a in simple and Clitic Left Dislocated (CLLD) structures. Data and analysis: Results were entered into repeated analyses of variance measure with type of structure and group as dependent variables and chronological age as a covariate. Conclusions: Results show decreased production of personal a among the bilingual children, especially in CLLD contexts. We also found strong correlations between target use and type of structure, but no correlations with developmental age among the bilingual children. Parents and monolingual children behaved at ceiling with matrix questions but showed variable behavior with CLLD structures. We argue for incomplete specification of the animacy and specificity features constraining DOM and structure complexity effects affecting child bilingual grammars. Originality: This study highlights that heritage speakers do not necessarily become less native-like with age and increased exposure to English. The comparison of the bilingual children to both monolingual children and their parents was essential to mitigate the effects of dialect and cognitive development.

Effect of structure complexity of Catechins on the Properties of Glutenin: the Rule, Action Mechanism and Application

Effect of catechins with different structure complexity on the properties of glutenins was investigated, and its action mechanism and potential application were further explored. Four catechins, including epicatechin (EC), epigallocaetchin (EGC), epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), could cause glutenins aggregation, further changed the spatial structures and thermal stability of glutenins, and the action sequence of catechins was as: EGCG > ECG> EGC > EC. Meanwhile, all catechins might not interrupt the covalent bonds of glutenins including peptide bonds and disulfide bonds. By molecular docking analysis, hydrogen and hydrophobic bonds were the main molecular interactions between catechins and glutenins, and the binding strength of catechins on glutenins could be ranked as: EGCG > ECG> EGC > EC. Results indicated that esterified catechins (EGCG and ECG) had stronger binding effects on glutenins than non-esterified catechins (EGC and EC). Furthermore, catechins in tea polyphenols could interact with glutenins in wheat flour, and improved the quality of bread including structure, specific volume, texture and color. All present results suggested that the gallic acyl group and hydroxyl group in catechins could promote the interaction of catechins with glutenins, and catechins could significantly affect the spatial structure and physicochemical properties of glutenins. So, catechins showed the potential for improving the properties of glutenins in chemical and food industries.

A Method for Measuring the structure complexity of Web Application

The precise and effective measure results of Web applications not only facilitate good comprehension of them, but also benefit to the macro-management of software activities, such as testing, reverse engineering, reuse, etc. The paper exploits some researches on measuring the structure complexity of Web application. Through a deep analysis of the configuration and objects＇ interactions of Web system, two conclusions have been drawn：① A generic Web application consists of static web page, dynamic page, component and database object; ② The main interactions have only three styles, that is static link, dynamic link and call/return relation. Based on analysis and modeling of the content of a Web page （static or dynamic）, complexity measure methods of both control logic of script and nesting of HTML code are further discussed. In addition, two methods for measuring the complexity of inte〉page navigation are also addressed by modeling the inte〉page navigation behaviors of Web application via WNG graph.

Efficient exploitation of the temporal and inter-view correlation is critical to multi-view video coding (MVC), and the key to it relies on the design of prediction chain structure according to the various pattern of correlations. In this paper, we propose a novel prediction structure model to design optimal MVC coding schemes along with tradeoff analysis in depth between compression efficiency and prediction structure complexity for certain standard functionalities. Focusing on the representation of the entire set of possible chain structures rather than certain typical ones, the proposed model can given efficient MVC schemes that adaptively vary with the requirements of structure complexity and video source characteristics (the number of views, the degrees of temporal and interview correlations). To handle large scale problem in model optimization, we deploy a hybrid genetic algorithm which yields satisfactory results shown in the simulations.

Influence of structure complexity of phenolic compounds on their binding with maize starch

The influence of structure complexity of phenolic compounds on their binding with maize starch was investigated. The computational results (including molecular electrostatic potential and molecular dynamics simulation) indicated that protocatechuic acid, ellagic acid, naringin and tannic acid could bind with maize starch by hydrogen bonds, while the number and distribution of hydroxyl groups in phenolic compounds significantly affected the binding affinity and combination conformation. Furthermore, the microstructure, particle size, crystallinity and thermal stability of maize starch were both changed obviously through the binding with phenolic compounds, and the binding effect was more obvious induced by phenolic compounds with larger molecular size and bigger steric hindrance. All present results suggested that the amount of hydroxyl groups, molecular size and steric hindrance of phenolic compounds could affect their binding effects on starch molecules, so as to modify the structure and properties of maize starch in different degrees.

An Analytical Approach to Compute the System Architectural complexity

The management of system complexity is essential to ensure the successful delivery of a system. However, as system complexity continues to grow, an accurate quantitative measure of the complexity of a system becomes a necessity. In this study, we consider the definition of structural complexity introduced by Sinha, and we derive analytical expressions for the complexity of both individual components alone and their interactions. Among the complexity metrics developed to date, we considered entropy-based ones, which allowed us to objectively quantify the complexity while satisfying the criteria introduced by Weyuker. The notion of intrinsic descriptive complexity introduced by Kolmogorov, instead of the Shannon entropy, was used to analyze the structural complexity of engineered systems. The applicability of the structural complexity metric to the graph representing the system architecture is demonstrated.

Natural ecosystems and human societies have evolved in many diverse ways and they are both complex systems. Our learning from the structure complexity of natural ecosystems can help us to redesign the structure of industrial system. Thus the materials and energy efficiency of industrial systems can be improved well to achieve the sustainable goals. In this paper, Structural Analysis Method for Industrial Ecosystems (SAMIE) is introduced and applied in the analysis of the structure complexity and efficiency of the industrial ecosystems. The industrial ecosystem is analyzed based on the industrial species' classification, which is analogous to the natural ecosystem. A set of indicators are developed to evaluate the industrial system, in order to explore the problems of structural complexity, identify the limiting factors of industrial ecosystem evolution, and strengthen the capacity of adaptation and self-organization. A case study on LuBei industrial ecosystem in China has been selected to apply the SAMIE approach. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Measuring the complexity of physical systems has been traditionally a problem in numerous engineering applications. Lin [Entropy 10 (1) (2008) 1-5] showed that the structural complexity is related to other properties of a solid such as symmetry and its stability over time. In Ratsaby [Entropy 10 (1) (2008) 6-14] a model was introduced which defines the complexity of a solid structure not by a qualitative notion of entropy but by an algorithmic notion of description complexity. According to the model, a dynamic structure in a random surrounding acts as an interfering entity that deforms randomness. In the current Note we report on the results of an empirical study that analyzes the output response of a simulated elastic beam subjected to a field of external random forces input. The relationship between the complexity of the system and the stochasticity of the output is shown to support this model and is a first indication that solids act similar to algorithmic selection rules. Granular computing is a useful method in the computational intelligence field. The current research on information granule is mainly granulation of information system object set and its properties. The concept of information granules of information system attribute set based on functional dependency is proposed, and then the concepts of information system structure and information system structure complexity are defined. The changing rules of information system structure are studied when function dependency or attribute changes. A new concept of attribute reduction is presented and efficient calculation method is given.
