Current state and future directions of multirate filter banks and their applications

This paper provides an overview of the basic concepts, current state and future directions of uniform and nonuniform multirate filter banks and their applications. Research in the areas of multidimensional filter banks, and wavelet transforms, as a direct extension to the topic is still proceeding at a rapid rate. Different design techniques and algorithms that are currently of interest are investigated from hardware complexity and reconstructed signals' quality points of view. Important similarities and differences between different filters categories are noted, which lead to a discussion of important issues that need to be resolved. Distortions and quantization effects present in the filter banks are reviewed and some solutions for controlling different types of distortions are introduced. The problem of designing QMF banks that can provide good frequency resolution while allowing for exact or near perfect reconstruction of the signal is quite challenging, because so many dissimilar types of distortion must be minimized and/or eliminated in the same design context. Recently, the perfect reconstruction cosine-modulated filter bank and filter banks with block sampling have emerged as an attractive choice of filter bank with respect to implementation complexities and design cost. New trends and future directions including selective multirate filter banks, filter banks with nonuniform decimation ratio, filter banks with discrete coefficients, multidimensional filter banks, nonlinear filter banks and data dependent decompositions are presented. Finally, some selected applications of multirate filter banks are described;namely transmultiplexers, speech and image coding, analog voice privacy systems and wavelets based signal and image compression. Marquardt optimization method to design two-channel quadrature mirror filter banks

This paper proposes an efficient method for the design of two-channel, quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank. The design problem is formulated to minimize an objective function, which is a linear combination of pass-band error and stop-band residual energy of the low-pass analysis filter of the filter bank. and the square error of the overall transfer function of the QMF bank at the quadrature frequency. A new algorithm has been developed to minimize the objective function by optimizing the filter tap weights by using Marquardt optimization method. Simulation results of the algorithm show that the performance of the proposed method is better than that of the already existing methods. (C) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper we review some recent interactions between harmonic analysis and data compression, The story goes hack of course to Shannon's R(D) theory in the case of Gaussian stationary processes, which says that transforming into a Fourier basis followed by block coding gives an optimal lossy compression technique;practical developments like transform-based image compression have been inspired by this result. In this paper we also discuss connections perhaps less familiar to the Information Theory community, growing out of the field of harmonic analysis. Recent harmonic analysis constructions, such as wavelet transforms and Gabor transforms, are essentially optimal transforms for transform coding in certain settings. Some of these transforms are under consideration for Future compression standards. We discuss some of the lessons of harmonic analysis in this century. Typically the problems and achievements of this field have involved goals that were not obviously related to practical data compression, and have used a language not immediately accessible to outsiders. Nevertheless, through an extensive generalization of what Shannon called the "sampling theorem," harmonic analysis has succeeded in developing new forms of functional representation which turn out to have significant data compression interpretations. We explain why harmonic analysis has interacted with data compression, and we describe some interesting recent ideas in the field that may affect data compression in the future.

Pixel Interlacing Based Video Transmission for Low-Complexity Intra-Frame Error Concealment

When multi-path fading and interference frequently disrupts a mobile radio communication system, it can seriously undermine its reliability for transmission of compressed video signals. In this paper, we present a pixel interlacing based video transmission system for low-complexity Intra-frame error concealment over error-prone mobile networks, especially under severe channel conditions. The proposed method, despite its low-complexity which is based on a simple pixel interlacing technique at the encoder, can significantly enhance the quality of the corrupted video signal. Experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly improve image quality (with the average PSNR gain up to 15.80 dB) in comparison with the existing methods.

This paper proposes a novel algebraic integer (AI) based multi-encoding of Daubechies-4 and -6 2-D wavelet filters having error-free integer-based computation. Digital VLSI architectures employing parallel channels are proposed, physically realized and tested. The multi-encoded AI framework allows a multiplication-free and computationally accurate architecture. It also guarantees a noise-free computation throughput the multi-level multi-rate 2-D filtering operation. A single final reconstruction step (FRS) furnishes filtered and down-sampled image outputs in fixed-point, resulting in low levels of quantization noise. Comparisons are provided between Daubechies-4 and -6 designs in terms of SNR, PSNR, hardware structure, and power consumptions, for different word lengths. SNR and PSNR improvements of approximately 30% were observed in favour of AI-based systems, when compared to 8-bit fixed-point schemes (six fractional bits). Further, FRS designs based on canonical signed digit representation and on expansion factors are proposed. The Daubechies-4 and -6 4-level VLSI architectures are prototyped on a Xilinx Virtex-6 vcx240t-1ff1156 FPGA device at 282 MHz and 146 MHz, respectively, with dynamic power consumption of 164 mW and 339 mW, respectively, and verified on FPGA chip using an ML605 platform.

A wavelet filter comparison on multiple datasets for signal compression and denoising

In this paper, we explicitly analyze the performance effects of several orthogonal and bi-orthogonal wavelet families. For each family, we explore the impact of the filter order (length) and the decomposition depth in the multiresolution representation. In particular, two contexts of use are examined: compression and denoising. In both cases, the experiments are carried out on a large dataset of different signal kinds, including various image sets and 1D signals (audio, electrocardiogram and seismic). Results for all the considered wavelets are shown on each dataset. Collectively, the study suggests that a meticulous choice of wavelet parameters significantly alters the performance of the above mentioned tasks. To the best of authors' knowledge, this work represents the most complete analysis and comparison between wavelet filters. Therefore, it represents a valuable benchmark for future works.

Optimisation of two-channel QMF bank using modified cuckoo search technique for biomedical image applications

In this paper, an improved technique for the design of two-channel linear phase Quadrature Mirror Filter (QMF) bank with Modified Cuckoo Search (MCS) technique is represented. The performance of proposed scheme is compared with other reported methods for QMF bank design. Based on the simulation results, it is demonstrated that the proposed MCS method can achieve 17 times reduction in pass band error, 215 times lower stop band error, 41 times decrease in transition band error and 7.7 times reduction in measure of ripple (mor) when compared with recently reported Improved Particle Swarm Optimisation (IPSO) technique. Moreover, the proposed QMF bank applied for sub-band decomposition reconstruction of a biomedical image provides 43% reduction in mean square error and 8.3 dB higher peak signal-to-noise ratio compared to IPSO algorithm.

This proposed paper presents a design approach for two-channel quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank using improved artificial bee colony algorithm. Artificial bee colony algorithm has been modified by fine tuning some existing control parameters. Here QMF bank design is used for a low-pass prototype FIR filter design problem. The objective function is the minimizing of mean square error of magnitude responses between desired and designed low-pass prototype FIR filters. The objective function is minimized by using the modified ABC algorithm yielding improved results. Two design examples are also presented to show the efficiency of the proposed method over the existing methods in the literature. The results of the proposed design approach have also been compared with that of the produced results in the literature.

Recently, a lot of deep learning model successful in taking over conventional methods in speech processing fields. Vector quantization is a popular technique to reduce the amount of speech data before transmitting. The conventional vector quantization method is based on the mathematical model. Last few years, the Vector Quantized Variational AutoEncoder has been proposed for an end-to-end vector quantization based on deep learning techniques. In this paper, we investigate the sub-band quantization in the Vector Quantized Variational AutoEncoder. This model can concentrate on specific frequency bands to assign more bits and leave the unnecessary band with few bits. Experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed quantization method for the spectral envelope parameters of the high-quality vocoder that operates at 48 kHz sampling frequency named WORLD vocoder. At the same four target bit rates, the sub-band Vector Quantized Variational AutoEncoder can reduce the Log Spectral Distortion around 0.93 dB in average.

In this paper a neural-network based recursive algorithm for computation of the principal component of a stationary vector stochastic process is discussed. The optimal criteria is to retain the maximum information contained of the input, so as to be able to reconstruct the network inputs from the corresponding outputs with minimum mean square error. In this paper a multi-stage principal component extraction (PCE) algorithm is proposed for sub-band decomposition. In multimedia applications though wavelet or sub-band coding of image has been shown to be superior to more traditional transform coding techniques, little attention has been paid to the important issue of whether both the wavelet transforms and the subsequent can be implemented in low memory without significant loss in performance. This paper addresses the problem of low memory image compression and proposes a block based, reduced memory PCE based, image compression algorithm suitable for multimedia online applications.
