We design and implement a software-radio system for superposition coding (SC), a multiuser transmission scheme that deliberately introduces interference among user signals at the transmitter, using a library of off-the-shelf point-to-point channel codes. We experimentally determine the set of rate-pairs achieved by this transmission scheme under a packet-error constraint. Our results suggest that SC can provide substantial gains in spectral efficiencies over those achieved by orthogonal schemes such as Time Division Multiplexing. Our findings also question the practical utility of the Gaussian approximation for the inter-user interference in superposition-Coded systems.

superposition coding with Unequal Error Protection for the Uplink of Overloaded DS-CDMA System

The overloaded CDMA schemes exploited in direct sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) systems are mainly to accommodate a greater number of users than the available spreading factor N. In this paper, a superposition coding CDMA (SPC-CDMA) with unequal error protection (UEP) is proposed as one of the overloaded CDMA schemes for the next generation mobile communication systems. It exploits the available power control in most base stations to adapt the transmitted power of active users in the uplink channel. In this scheme, the active users are divided into G groups and each group consists of K users. The K users share the same spreading sequence and are distinguished by different received power levels. At the receiver side, the system first performs despreading for group detection followed by multiuser receiver to estimate the K user signals in each group. It is shown through simulations that better performance are achieved compared to the conventional DS-CDMA and existing overloaded collaborative spreading CDMA (CS-CDMA) schemes, in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and fading channels. Hence, the proposed scheme maximizes the system capacity K-fold compared to conventional DS-CDMA system without requiring extra spreading codes, with average signal to noise ratio (SNR) cost of only 1dB and 2 dB over AWGN and fading channels respectively at BER of 10(-3). On the other hand, for the same N, K and power constraints, SPC-CDMA scheme achieves twofold increase in data rate with 0.7 and 4 dB gains over AWGN and fading channels respectively, compared with overloaded CS-CDMA scheme in the same system capacity. In addition, the proposed scheme can also attain different levels of UEP for different users' requirements by adjusting their fractions of transmitted powers.

We consider a wireless system where multiple users are served in Downlink (DL) by one Base Station (BS) and one Relay Station (RS). Previous research has shown that, combining two users' messages via superposition coding (SC) could enhance their achievable rate and fairness, in both two-user and multi-user systems. In this work, we propose two novel SC schemes referred as Relayed/Direct (RD-SC) and Relayed/Relayed SC (RR-SC) schemes, that combine the messages to a pair of Relayed/Direct users or Relayed/Relayed users into three or four SC layers, where the number of SC layers is equal to the number of available links. For each scheme, power allocation under sum-rate maximization is analyzed, enabling to derive the optimal power ratios to each SC layer numerically. Then, we design the non-orthogonal Max Rate-Two User-SC (MR-TU-SC) Scheduler and Proportional Fair-Two User-SC (PF-TU-SC) Scheduler where a pair of selected users are allocated simultaneously based on RD-SC and RR-SC schemes. The simulation results show that the proposed schedulers significantly outperform the conventional orthogonal schedulers where a single user is allocated on a unit resource block, in terms of system throughput, fairness and outage, while approaching the upper bound performance.

User cooperative is a powerful tool to combat fading and to increase robustness for communications over wireless channels. For cooperative relaying communications, the outage probability and the expected rate (throughput) can be greatly improved when the superposition coding relaying (SC-relaying) strategy is employed. Under the assumption of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), this work contributes to a comprehensive investigation on the outage probability and the throughput of cooperative relaying communications system with only two-level rate SC. Through strict mathematical process and deduction, the approximated close-form expressions of the outage probabilities and the throughput of system are obtained for the first time. Based on the results, the impact of power and channel allocation fractions on system performance is carried out. With the aim of maximal throughput, a set of optimal solutions of system parameters are obtained by employing difference evolution arithmetic. The comparative numerical analyses show that the approximation results are feasible and correct. Copyright (c) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The conventional straightforward relaying scheme named decode-and-forward (DF) protocol is used at relay to decode the data received from source and forward the decoded data to the destination to improve the spatial diversity gain. Although it is a simple scheme, the total resource efficiency is low for multiple sources. superposition coding has been known as a spectral efficient technique in wireless networks. However, when it is applied to the uplink multiple access relay systems, it suffers from performance degradation caused by the power allocation between the symbols of multiple sources. In this paper, we propose to remedy this problem by using hierarchical modulation at the source node and superposition coding at the relay node to enhance the bit energy. We investigate how hierarchical modulation can be incorporated and optimized with superposition coding. Specially, we discuss the capacity behavior of the proposed scheme and compare with the baseline, namely the capacity behavior of the existing DF scheme and the capacity behavior of the superposition coding. Our results are encouraging in that superposed hierarchical modulation significantly improves the better block error rate and capacity performance in multiple access relay channels.

We present simple, practical codes designed for the binary and Gaussian dirty-paper channels. We show that the dirty-paper decoding problem can be transformed into an equivalent multiple-access decoding problem, for which we apply superposition coding. Our concept is a generalization of the nested lattices approach of Zamir, Shamai, and Erez. In a theoretical setting, our constructions are capable of achieving capacity using random component codes and maximum-likelihood decoding. We also present practical implementations of the constructions, and simulation results for both dirty-paper channels. Our results for the Gaussian dirty-paper channel are on par with the best known results for nested lattices. We discuss the binary dirty-tape channel, for which we present a simple, effective coding technique. Finally, we propose a framework for extending our approach to general Gel'fand-Pinsker channels.

This paper shows that the capacity region of the continuous-time Poisson broadcast channel is achieved via superposition coding for most channel parameter values. Interestingly, the channel in some subset of these parameter values does not belong to any of the existing classes of broadcast channels for which superposition coding is optimal (e.g., degraded, less noisy, and more capable). In particular, we introduce the notion of effectively less noisy broadcast channel and show that it implies less noisy but is not in general implied by more capable. For the rest of the channel parameter values, we show that there is a gap between Marton's inner bound and the UV outer bound.

A coding approach based on the superposition structure is proposed for linear operator channels. Under a subspace decoding rule, a lower bound on the maximum achievable rate of this coding approach is characterized. Under the subspace decoding rule, this coding approach is capacity achieving for a class of linear operator channels, and it can potentially achieve higher rates than the subspace coding approach.

Although the 2-source wireless Butterfly Network (BN) represents a natural extension of the well-known 2-Way Relay Channel (2-WRC) scenario, a direct implementation of conventional Wireless Network coding (WNC)/Physical Layer Network coding (PLNC) principles in this network is not straightforward. While the information necessary for decoding of the desired data from WNC-coded data at each destination is naturally available in 2-WRC, in the BN the destinations can obtain such information only by overhearing the wireless transmission from the unintended source. Since the amount of such received "Network" Side-Information (N-SI) would be limited by the quality of the corresponding source-destination link, the assumption of perfect side-information is no longer valid in BN, rising many novel research challenges for the design of WNC-based BN. In this paper we propose the superposition coding (SC) based scheme as a feasible strategy for relaying in BN. We will show that by a proper optimization of its parameters (rates & power allocation of underlying SC messages), SC is able to achieve the upper bound of two-way rate in BN for both the zero and perfect N-SI case and moreover, it represents a viable solution even for the case where only partial N-SI is available at both destinations.
