superposition coding can be used to improve capacity of communications in a variety of scenarios. This paper is concerned with the application of superposition coding in TDMA system forward link packet data transmission with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). By taking advantage of the total received SINR disparities on the forward link, the system can transmit to multiple users at the same time and frequency by using superposition coding. The average sector throughput of TDMA system forward link packet data transmission with the proposed superposition coding technique is mathematically analyzed for a multi-cell scenario. From numerical examples, it is shown that superposition coding can significantly increase the average throughput of the system.

In this paper, two issues in assessing the performance of superposition coding (SC) in the downlink Long Term Evolution (LTE) are investigated. The first issue is the prediction of user's signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the scheduler based on the user's channel state information (CSI) feedback, when the actual transmission scheme is different from the scheme used for CSI computation. Prediction of the SINR value is needed for the assignment of the modulation order and the code rate. The second issue is with regards to the physical layer abstraction used for modeling the system-level performance of the SC scheme on the basis of the link-level simulation results. With the physical layer abstraction, the complexity of the system level simulation is reduced significantly.

Full-duplex (FD) communication has drawn more and more attention due to its capability of simultaneously transmitting and receiving signals. In this paper, we consider a typical scenario where a FD base-station (BS) simultaneously serves two half-duplex (HD) users with one working in the uplink and the other in the downlink. However, inter-user-interference (IUI) from the uplink user to the downlink user is one of the limiting factors of the overall system performance and we mainly focus on the IUI in this job. The FD system is modeled as a special X-interference channel and superposition coding (SC) technology is adopted by the BS and uplink user to deal with IUI. Then we analyse the achievable rate region by solving an optimization problem. Analytical results suggest that the system can achieve the best performance when SC is just applied by either the BS or the uplink user. The rate region improvement is further validated through numerical simulations. The results show that SC can effectively remove the IUI and enlarge the rate region. Moreover, the performance of the system with SC is almost as good as the system without IUI under the 3GPP assumptions.

Cooperative multicasting based on superposition and layered coding

Cooperative diversity plays an important role in combating channel fading and increasing reliability of wireless communication links. The main purpose of cooperative diversity is to transmit the same data from multiple sources. Hence, there is no inherent capability in the cooperative diversity schemes to deal with scalable types of data, for example, scalable video coded signals. The authors introduce a two-phase cooperative multicast scheme based on superposition coding to transmit scalable video signals. The new scheme mixes the superposition with cooperative diversity, and chooses the right parameters in both schemes to enhance the system's multicast capability. This study also derives an exact closed-form expression of the average multicast group throughput in case of Rayleigh flat fading channel. The closed-form expression allows system designers to choose the correct cooperation and superposition parameters to satisfy the network operator needs. Simulations show that, in addition to the additional degrees of freedom resulting from using cooperation with superposition, the proposed scheme outperforms the conservative scheme and schemes solely exploiting cooperative relaying or superposition. Simulations show that the new scheme can increase the average network throughput more than four times compared to the conservative scheme.

Cooperative diversity is an innovative approach to improve the reliability of communication. However, this technology is challenging in practice. Time and frequency synchronization of relay nodes in simultaneous based cooperative diversity protocols are very important. Hence, realization of such requirement is difficult. Although separation in transmission time of terminals in traditional time division multiple access (TDMA) method can solve the synchronization problems, but it leads to lower spectral efficiency. In this paper a cooperative strategy is proposed for asymmetric wireless networks that improves overall wireless communication performance in comparison with non-cooperative protocols with high spectral efficiency and non synchronization problems. In this technique, we use a combination of superposition coding and network coding to achieve incremental diversity in asymmetric wireless networks;hence the name superposition network coded cooperation (SNCC). The receiver structure is presented as simple as possible. The error performance of SNCC is analyzed by appropriate approximations and the analytical results are compared with simulation results. The results demonstrate improvement in error performance and the network lifetime.

Cooperative diversity plays an important role in achieving efficient multicast transmissions for wireless applications. In this paper, we propose a novel two-phase cooperative multicast scheme based on superposition coding. In the first phase, the Base Station (BS) broadcasts a composite message. Most of the subscribers in the multicast group will decode the base message and the subscribers who experience better channel conditions will decode the enhancement message (referred to as the first enhancement message) as well. In the second phase, a fraction of the subscribers who decoded the first enhancement message, cooperatively transmit the first enhancement message to the subscribers who failed to decode it. The remaining subscribers who successfully received the first enhancement message will not participate in the cooperative transmission and will receive a second enhancement message transmitted by the BS. The proposed scheme exploits spatial diversity gain across multiple subscribers to maintain higher average throughput for each subscriber in addition to enabling scalable delivery of multimedia data. Simulations show that, under the same total energy consumption, the proposed scheme outperforms the conservative scheme and schemes exploiting cooperative relaying or superposition solely.

We consider the mapping of bits-to-superimposed constellation symbols in terms of the achievable rate on the channel for the HARQ system using superposition coding as proposed in [2]. We show that using a Gray mapping of bits-to-superimposed constellation symbols has better performance than the conventional natural mapping that results from superposition in signal space, for all the values of the superposition ratio. We also show through link-level simulations that the predicted gains in terms of achievable rate can be realized in practice using LDPC codes. Furthermore, we show that the optimal superposition ratio for the Gray mapping case results in conventional higher order constellation symbols after the superposition operation.

In future wireless communication systems reliability and throughput are the major concern for the users in an infrastructure less scenarios. These requirements are fulfill by the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted superposition coded cooperation (UA-SP-CC) system. However, the traditional relaying scheme (amplify-and-forward (AF)/decode-and-forward (DF)) used at the UAV is no longer sufficient in practical scenarios because it applies the received signal without comparing the received instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with the predefined threshold value. The other important issue in UA-SP-CC system is the same channel (Rayleigh or Rician) consideration for the whole network. However, in practical circumstances, the channel gain varies with UAV height. Taking these concerns into account, we consider a hybrid relaying at UAV and Nakagami-m channel whose gain is a function of UAV heights while deciding the channel between uplink (UL)/downlink (DL) in a UA-SP-CC scenario. The height-dependent path loss exponent is also consider for modeling the large scale fading between UL/DL. Taking urban scenarios into account, this paper considers non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths among the ground users, and Rayleigh fading utilize for implementing these NLoS components. The expressions for the superposition coded noise (SPCN) and the variance of SPCN are developed for UA-NC-CC system using the proposal. The expressions of spectral efficiency, probability of outage, time complexity analysis, and throughput are developed for the proposal. Algorithm 1 is developed for evaluating the performance metrics (spectral efficiency and probability of outage) of our proposed work and compared the results with the existing state-of-the-art (Rician and Rayleigh fading channel model).

Deep Learning-Based superposition Coded Modulation for Hierarchical Semantic Communications Over Broadcast Channels

We consider multi-user semantic communications over broadcast channels. While most existing works consider that each receiver requires either the same or independent semantic information, this paper explores the scenario where the semantic information desired by different receivers is different but correlated. In particular, we investigate semantic communications over Gaussian broadcast channels where the transmitter has a common observable source but the receivers wish to recover hierarchical semantic information in adaptation to their channel conditions. Inspired by the capacity achieving property of superposition coding, we propose a deep learning-based superposition coded modulation (DeepSCM) scheme. Specifically, the hierarchical semantic information is first extracted and encoded into basic and enhanced feature vectors. A linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) decorrelator is then developed to obtain a refinement from the enhanced features that is uncorrelated with the basic features. Finally, the basic features and their refinement are superposed for broadcasting after probabilistic modulation. Extensive experiments are conducted for two-receiver image semantic broadcasting with coarse and fine classification as hierarchical semantic tasks. DeepSCM outperforms the benchmarking coded-modulation scheme without a superposition structure as well as the classic separate source-channel coding baselines, especially with large channel disparity and high order modulation. It also approaches the performance upperbound as if there were only one receiver.
