Effect of consecutive re-synchronization protocols on pregnancy rate in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) heifers out of the breeding season

The combined effect of six consecutive timed artificial inseminations (TAIs) on pregnancy rates, following two different synchronization protocols on buffalo heifers, over a period of seven months typically characterized by low breeding performances, were investigated in this study. A total of 2189 TAIs were performed on 1463 buffalo heifers within a large buffalo farm in the south of Italy. Individual animals were allowed to undergo synchronization protocol (either a slightly modified Ovsynch or Progesterone treatment) and TAI until establishment of pregnancy or else for not more than six consecutive times. Semen of seven proven bulls was used throughout the study, which was carried out from March to September of the same year. Therefore, other than the effect given by consecutive TAIs over time, a monthly and a seasonal effect could also be tested, once the entire period was split into a Low Breeding Season (LBS) from March to June, and a Transition to Breeding Season (TBS) from July to September. From the data recorded in this study and the statistical analysis performed, it can be stated that the two protocols for the synchronization of ovulation were similar in efficiency in determining pregnancies with an overall fertility rate of 89.4% when the comparison was run both on a monthly basis or when months were grouped into two different seasons. In addition, an average of 1.83 AI/pregnancy was reported, slightly higher for the Ovsynch when compared to the Progesterone protocol: 1.91 vs 1.70, respectively. Finally, when considering the number of progressive synchronization treatments implemented over time as covariate, neither Ovsynch nor Progesterone treatment significantly affected pregnancy rates following the first of the six synchronization sessions. Comparison of three reproductive management strategies for lactating dairy cows using combination of estrus detection or ovulation synchronization and Fixed-Timed Artificial Insemination

The objective of this study was to compare the reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows submitted to first AI after combination of estrus detection and fixed timed AI (FTAI) and FTAI only. Cows were randomly assigned to receive AI at detected estrus between 50 and 70 d in milk (DIM), if not detected in estrus, were enrolled in either Ovsynch (ED-Ov, n = 485) or PRIDsynch (ED-PR, n = 505) protocols;or received FTAI at 80 DIM after Double-Ovsynch protocol (DO, n = 501). Cows were body condition scored (BCS) at calving and at 43 DIM;and evaluated for postpartum disorders within 7 d postpartum;clinical mastitis, lameness and bovine respiratory disease were recorded until first AI. Ovarian cyclicity was monitored at 43 and 50 DIM, and at 70 and 77 DIM. Pregnancy diagnoses (PD) were performed at 32 and 63 d after AI. Overall prevalence of postpartum anovulation was 7.8%. Pregnancy per AI (P/AI) did not differ between reproductive strategies at 32 d PD (ED-Ov = 43.2%;ED-PR = 41.7%;DO= 45.3%). Primiparous cows had greater P/AI than multiparous cows (53.7% vs 36.8%). Cows on farm 1 had lower P/AI compared with their counterparts on farm 2 (42.1% vs 45.4%). Cows with BCS > 2.5 at 43 DIM had greater P/AI compared with cows with BCS <= 2.5 (44.5% vs 34.7%). Similar P/AI for cow's receiving AI at detected estrus and FTAI, low prevalence of disease anovulation may have contributed to the similar performance of ED-Ov, ED-PR and DO.

Application domains such as automotive and the Internet of Things may benefit from in-network computing to reduce the distance data travels through the network and the response time. Information Centric Networking (ICN) based compute frameworks such as Named Function Networking (NFN) are promising options due to their location independence and loosely-coupled communication model. However, unlike current operations, such solutions may benefit from orchestration across the compute nodes to use the available resources in the network better. In this paper, we adopt the State Vector synchronization (SVS), an application dataset synchronization protocol in ICN, to enhance the neighborhood knowledge of in-network compute nodes in a distributed fashion. As such, we design distributed coordination for in-network computation (DICer) that assists the service deployments by improving the resolution of compute requests. We evaluate the performance of DICer against NFN and observe an increase in the resource utilization at the edge and a reduction in the request completion time.

Comparison of 2 protocols to increase circulating progesterone concentration before timed artificial insemination in lactating dairy cows with or without elevated body temperature

Two treatments designed to increase circulating progesterone concentration (P4) during preovulatory follicle development were compared. One treatment used 2 intravaginal P4 implants (controlled internal drug-releasing inserts;CIDR) and the other used a GnRH treatment at beginning of the protocol. Lactating Holstein cows that had been diagnosed as nonpregnant were randomly assigned to receive timed artificial insemination (TAI) following 1 of 2 treatments (n = 1,638 breedings): (1) GnRH: CIDR+ 2 mg of estradiol (E2) benzoate + 100 mu g of GnRH on d - 11, PGF(2 alpha), on d -4, CIDR withdrawal + 1.0 mg of E2-cypionate + PGF(2 alpha)) on d -2, and TAI on d 0;or (2) 2CIDR: 2 CIDR + 2 mg of E2-benzoate on d -11, 1 CIDR withdrawn + PGF(2 alpha), on d -4, second CIDR withdrawn + 1.0 mg of E2-cypionate + PGF2a, on d 2, and TAI on d 0. Milk yield was measured daily between d 0 and d 7. Rectal temperature was measured using a digital thermometer at d 0 and 7, and elevated body temperature was defined as an average rectal temperature >= 39.1 degrees C. Pregnancy diagnoses were performed on d 32 and 60 after TAI. We detected no effect of treatments on pregnancy per AI or pregnancy loss regardless of elevated body temperature, body condition score, parity, milk yield, or presence or absence of a corpus luteum (CL) on d -11 or d -4. Pregnancy per AI at 60 d was reduced [elevated body temperature = 22.8% (162/709), no elevated body temperature 34.1% (279/817)] and pregnancy loss tended to increase [elevated body temperature = 20.2% (41/203), no elevated body temperature 14.4% (47/326)] in cows with elevated body temperature. Various physiological measurements associated with greater fertility were also reduced in cows with elevated body temperature, such as percentage of cows with a CL at PGF(2 alpha),Q (decreased 7.9%), ovulatory follicle diameter (decreased 0.51 mm), expression of estrus (decreased 5.1%), and ovulation near TAI (decreased 2.8%) compared with cows without elevate

In this article, motivated by a recent work of R. Brockett Brockett (2013), we study a robust synchronization problem for multistable Brockett oscillators within an Input-to-State Stability (ISS) framework. Based on a recent generalization of the classical ISS theory to multistable systems and its application to the synchronization of multistable systems, a synchronization protocol is designed with respect to compact invariant sets of the unperturbed Brockett oscillator. The invariant sets are assumed to admit a decomposition without cycles (i.e. with neither homoclinic nor heteroclinic orbits). Contrarily to the local analysis of Brockett (2013), the conditions obtained in our work are global and applicable for family of non-identical oscillators. Numerical simulation examples illustrate our theoretical results. © 2016

This work is motivated by the needs to manage the priority inversion problem without sacrificing the utilization of increasingly popular hardware accelerators. A new mechanism is developed to dedicate accelerators to selected higher-priority tasks. The floor and ceiling priorities of accelerators are thus proposed as an extension of the concept of semaphore priority ceiling to guarantee at most two priority inversions for any real-time task in a uniprocessor system with multiple accelerators. The properties of the proposed concept are explored with respect to blocking behaviors over the CPU and accelerators and are verified by a series of experiments, for which the insight of the simple but effective idea is evaluated and presented. © 2014 ACM.

We study the gradient clock synchronization (CCS) problem, in which the worst-case clock skew between neighboring nodes has to be minimized. In particular, we consider oblivious clock synchronization algorithms which base their decision on how to adapt the clock solely on the most accurate timing information received from each neighbor. For several intuitive clock synchronization algorithms, which attempt to minimize the skew at all times, we show that the clock skew between neighboring nodes can be significantly larger than the proven lower bound of Omega(log D/log log D), where D denotes the diameter of the network. All of these natural algorithms belong to the class of oblivious clock synchronization algorithms. Additionally, we present an oblivious algorithm with a worst-case skew of O(d + root D) between any two nodes at distance d.

Os objetivos foram avaliar o efeito da remoção de bezerros (RB) no desenvolvimento folicular e na indução de ciclicidade e a eficácia do MGA precedendo protocolos de IATF, que utilizam GnRH ou BE, nas taxas de concepção a IATF e gestação. Foram utilizadas 163 vacas paridas em anestro da raça Nelore com 80 ± 29 dias pós-parto e ECC de 3,0 ± 0,29, divididas em 4 grupos: G1: (n=40, controle); G2: (n=42, RB): RB (60 h) 11 dias antes da estação de monta (EM); G3: (n=43, MGA + GnRH): MGA (MGA PREMIX®, 0,5 mg/dia, v.o.) por 10 dias, seguido por RB (60 h), após este período receberam GnRH (CYSTORELIN®, 50 mcg, i.m). Após 6,5 dias, PGF2α (LUTALYSE®, 25 mg, i.m.) que foi seguida por outra RB (54h). Após a RB, todos os animais receberam GnRH e foram inseminados; G4: (n=38, MGA + BE): MGA por 10 dias, seguido por RB (60h), após este período receberam BE (Estrogin , 1,0 mg, i.m.). Após 7 dias, PGF2α que foi seguida por outra RB (54h). Após 24 horas da PGF2α, os animais receberam BE e foram inseminados 30 horas depois. Após a IATF, nos 4 grupos, foi realizado observação de cio e IA (30 d) e por monta natural por mais 32 dias. A ciclicidade, o efeito do MGA e RB no desenvolvimento folicular, as taxas de sincronização, concepção e gestação foram determinados por exames ultra-sonográficos. A variável dias para ficar gestante foi analisada pela curva de sobrevivência, enquanto que as variáveis binomiais e contínuas foram analisadas por regressão logística e pelo GLM do SAS, respectivamente. Foram incluídos no modelo efeito de tratamento, ordem, sexo da cria e suas interações e ECC como co-variável. O MGA foi fornecido, ao G3 e G4, diariamente e os animais ingeriram, em média, 0,99 mg/dia de MGA. This paper describes an approach to discrete event simulation modeling that appears to be effective for developing portable and efficient parallel execution of models of large distributed systems and communication networks. In this approach, the modeler develops sub-models using an existing sequential simulation modeling tool, using the full expressive power of the tool. A set of modeling language extensions permit automatically synchronized communication between sub-models; however, the automation requires that any such communication must take a non-zero amount of simulation time. Within this modeling paradigm, a variety of conservative synchronization protocols can transparently support conservative execution of sub-models on potentially different processors. A specific implementation of this approach, U.P.S. (Utilitarian Parallel Simulator), is described, along with performance results on the Intel Paragon.
