Leveraging contract farming to reduce leafy vegetable waste: a system dynamics approach from Kermanshah province of Iran

Decreasing food loss and waste (FLW) has become a global concern towards achieving sustainable food systems. One widely embraced approach is contract farming (CF), which enables the supply chain (SC) actors to manage the aggregate SC risks. Leafy vegetables are particularly vulnerable to wastage due to inadequate quality and SC performance, with Iran experiencing an alarming annual leafy vegetables waste (LVW) rate of 39% due to SC inefficiencies. Numerous scholars have proposed diverse FLW prevention strategies, yet their implementation often falters due to the absence of economic incentives for stakeholders. Hence, the focus should shift towards market-based strategies. This study examines the effect of CF as an economic incentive for farmers to reduce LVW in Kermanshah province. To achieve this goal, a system dynamics model of the waste system in the leafy vegetable SC (LVSC) was developed Data for the research was collected using a questionnaire, which surveyed 60 specialists and 728 actors across the SC. The results revealed that more than 50% of the LVW could be reduced by implementing CF. Consequently, government policies and initiatives should prioritize the development of processing industries via CF as a strategic avenue for action.

BackgroundObesity is an escalating global public health challenge that is expected to impact a significant portion of the world's population in the coming decades. It leads to severe health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, imposing significant economic burdens on health systems. Traditional intervention strategies, which emphasize individual lifestyle changes, fail to address the complex, systemic nature of obesity. This study aims to systematically review the application of system dynamics modelling (SDM) in obesity control, focusing on analyzing modelling methodologies and conducting a quality assessment of the included *** a comprehensive systematic literature retrieval, we explored terms pertinent to overweight/obesity and system dynamics across three databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. This search culminated in identifying peer-reviewed studies published from the inception of these databases until July 2024. Quality assessment was used to evaluate the SDM for obesity control. The protocol of this systematic review has been registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024554520).ResultsThirty studies were identified through a systematic review. These studies primarily focus on the effects of SD approaches, such as individual lifestyle changes, policy interventions within populations, and socio-economic and environmental improvements on obesity control. Among them, eleven studies completed the entire SDM process. Twenty-seven studies presented conceptual models, of which twenty-five developed casual loop diagrams (CLD). Seventeen studies conducted computational system dynamics modelling, with thirteen constructing stock-flow diagrams (SFD). Additionally, fourteen studies performed simulation analyses. Groundwater systems are vast natural water reservoirs used to support human water demands and ecosystem services. Various modeling approaches have been developed to help manage these complex highly-dynamic systems. This paper discusses the strengths and limitations of three modeling approaches, namely: processbased, data-driven and system dynamics modeling. For demonstration purposes, the three modeling approaches are applied to the Konya Closed Basin, a large agricultural region with semi-dry climate located in central Turkey. Process-based modeling is grounded in the theory-based representation of the governing processes but is somewhat limited by the computational effort and the difficulty of defining the required input parameters that characterize the heterogeneous aquifer system. Process-based models are shown to be powerful tools for resource management purposes provided climatic and water demand scenarios are accurately defined. Data-driven models are efficient tools for the management of groundwater resources but are highly dependent on the availability of large training data sets encompassing the spectrum of possible system responses. The high efficiency of surrogate modeling approaches makes them ideal tools for incorporation into applications such as real-time decision support systems and digital twin platforms. system dynamics modeling examines the groundwater exploitation problem within a socio-economic context that involves multiple stakeholders and their decision making. It combines groundwater flow models with socio-economics and endogenous decision rules to conduct scenario analysis and support policy development. The analyses and model demonstrations presented in this paper underscore the interconnectedness and complementarity of these three modeling approaches and the need for more integrated use of these modeling approaches for enhanced multi-sectoral management of groundwater systems.

Complex sociotechnical systems with multiple competing objectives and nonlinear dynamics pose significant challenges for policy optimization. Traditional simulation-based methods often struggle with high-dimensional policy spaces. This study addresses these challenges by combining genetic algorithms (GAs) with system dynamics (SD) modeling to optimize policy configurations in complex environments. Our approach merges SD's capacity to simulate intricate system behaviors with GA's prowess in multi-objective optimization. The SD model uses predefined decision variables to simulate system behavior, while GA iteratively adjusts these variables to find optimal policy configurations. We apply this hybrid approach to a media industry case study, focusing on balancing profit, competitiveness, and audience satisfaction. The research methodology integrates SD's ability to capture complex system behaviors with GA's strength in optimizing multiple objectives. An SD model simulates system behavior based on predefined decision variables representing key policy levers. GA then iteratively adjusts these variables based on fitness objectives derived from the SD model. This process evaluates performance and identifies the globally optimal policy configurations. The results show that the hybrid SD-GA framework significantly improves policy solutions compared to conventional methods. Sensitivity analysis confirms the optimized policies' robustness and comparative assessments highlight our approach's advantages in navigating complex policy spaces. This study introduces a new SD-GA framework that improves data-driven policy formulation in complex systems. It combines policy informatics and evolutionary algorithms to offer a comprehensive approach to multi-criteria decision-making. Future research could include long-term validation of this approach in the broadcasting industry to further refine and apply this methodology across various domains.

A system dynamics-based digital twin application for mealworm farming

Digital Twins (DTs) are virtual models that simulate real-world systems. This study introduces a DT for mealworm farming based on the system dynamics (SD) approach. The SD-based Mealworm Farm Digital Twin (MFDT) as an application is intended to enhance the efficiency of mealworm farming operations. The development process involved interviewing a mealworm farmer and implementing the findings using Vensim Software and Stella Architect. The model utilises qualitative causal loop diagrams to represent feedback and stock and flow diagrams for quantitative analysis. The mealworm farming method encompasses the simulation of crucial elements such as production, inventory management, and cost structures. The mealworm farmer used the MFDT to assess several policies and determine the most effective pricing strategies to yield the quickest return on investment and long-term retained earnings. Also, the effects of reducing the mealworm maturity cycle and using higher-cost organic feed, highlighting the importance of balanced operational modifications, were investigated. The MFDT also simulates customer behaviour and market dynamics, facilitating the development of efficient marketing strategies and enhancing customer satisfaction by balancing supply and demand. The MFDT includes scenarios that offer critical insights into developing robust management strategies by simulating real-world challenges, improving decision-making and ensuring sustainable and profitable farming practices. The MFDT is a valuable tool for farmers to experiment with various techniques and assess their impacts without the risks of real-world experiments.

Dynamic modeling of strategic thinking for top management teams and its impact on firm performance: a system dynamics approach

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to model the strategic thinking process, considering the different psychological traits of TMTs (top management teams) and how the technological dynamism affects the strategies framed together impacting the performance of the firm. Design/methodology/approach - modeling and simulation are done in this study using the system dynamics (SD) tool. The data are extracted using social media analytics, and the same is given as an input for the SDmodel, which is used for modeling and simulation of the interdependencies between the psychological factors, technological dynamism and firm performance. The analysis decodes how a change in the thinking process of a TMT has an impact on the performance of the company in an automobile market. Findings - The study has explained how different psychological traits affect the thinking process of a TMT and how the strategies framed with this thinking behavior have an impact on firm performance. Research limitations/implications - The study is limited only to the automobile industry in India, and only partial psychological constructs were considered to examine their impact on firm performance. This study can be further extended by analyzing the same to various other industries along with many other psychological constructs. Practical implications - The findings identify the change in behavior of the performance due to the thinking process and technological dynamism. This helps the top management to take into consideration different factors that affect the strategies framed for the company and what are the threshold points in the system that are to be focused on during the framing of a strategy. Originality/value - The study fills the unattended gaps in the literature regarding how the psychological traits are interdependent and how their relationship is affecting the thinking process, which is going to have an impact on the behavior of the firm performance. Software development is a complex activity that often exhibits counter-intuitive behavior, in that outcomes often vary quite radically from the intended results. The production of a high quality software product requires application of both defect prevention and defect detection techniques. A common defect detection strategy is to subject the product to several phases of testing such as unit, integration, and system. These testing phases consume significant project resources and cycle time. As software companies continue to search for ways for reducing cycle time and development costs while increasing quality, software-testing processes emerge as a prime target for investigation. This paper presents a system dynamics (SD) model of software development, better understanding testing processes. Motivation for modeling testing processes is presented along with an executable model of the unit test phase. Some sample model runs are described to illustrate the usefulness of the model.

Although it is widely known that the occurrence of depression increases over the course of adolescence, symptoms of mood disorders frequently go undetected. While schools are viable settings for conducting universal screening to systematically identify students in need of services for common health conditions, particularly those that adversely affect school performance, few school districts routinely screen their students for depression. Among the most commonly referenced barriers are concerns that the number of students identified may exceed schools' service delivery capacities, but few studies have evaluated this concern systematically. system dynamics (SD) modeling may prove a useful approach for answering questions of this sort. The goal of the current paper is therefore to demonstrate how SD modeling can be applied to inform implementation decisions in communities. In our demonstration, we used SD modeling to estimate the additional service demand generated by universal depression screening in a typical high school. We then simulated the effects of implementing "compensatory approaches" designed to address anticipated increases in service need through (1) the allocation of additional staff time and (2) improvements in the effectiveness of mental health interventions. Results support the ability of screening to facilitate more rapid entry into services and suggest that improving the effectiveness of mental health services for students with depression via the implementation of an evidence-based treatment protocol may have a limited impact on overall recovery rates and service availability. In our example, the SD approach proved useful in informing systems' decision-making about the adoption of a new school mental health service.

In the last decade, business models for sustainability have gained increasing attraction by corporate sustainability scholars with international conferences and scientific journals encouraging the development of the debate on their design, use and innovation processes. Capitalizing on the basic principles, requirements, and methodological limitations found in the literature on sustainability-oriented business model design, this paper aims to conceptualize a dynamic business modeling for sustainability approach, which combines an adapted sustainable business model canvas and system dynamics modeling. To this end, the paper also illustrates the key operating principles of the proposed approach through an exemplary application to Patagonia's business model. Findings suggest that dynamic business modeling for sustainability may contribute to sustainable business model research and practice by introducing a systemic design tool, which frames environmental, social, and economic drivers of value generation into a dynamic business model causal feedback structure, thus overcoming methodological gaps of the extant business model design tools.

Transition in dynamic events: The 2020 lightning complex fires in Northern California as an adaptive system

The transition from one level of operations to a next larger, more complex level while maintaining coherence as a system has stymied organizational theorists for decades. Drawing on systems theory, network analysis, and collaborative governance, we explore how networks adapt during rapidly escalating crises. Specifically, we investigate the emergence of a synthesizing intelligence function among networks to support coordinated action. Using a case study of the 2020 Santa Clara Unit Lightning Complex Fire, we analyze field operations data from Incident Reports filed by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to develop a system dynamics model. Our findings suggest that a synthesizing intelligence function, informed by various types of intelligence, influences the rate of change in operational systems during dynamic conditions. This system-wide intelligence function is crucial for decision-makers confronting extreme events, facilitating effective anticipation of complex transitions in large-scale operational systems.
