GENERALIZED NEWTON algorithm TO MINIMIZE A FUNCTION WITH MANY VARIABLES USING COMPUTER-EVALUATED EXACT HIGHER-ORDER DERIVATIVES

This paper describes an optimization algorithm which uses up torth-order derivatives to find the optimum of anr-times continuously differentiable function of many variables. The algorithm, developed by Kalaba and Tishler (Ref. 1), obtains the exact values of the derivatives required for the optimization from the table algorithm presented in Kalabaet al. (Ref. 2) and Kalaba and Tishler (Ref. 3). The optimization algorithm described here reduces to the well-known Newton-Raphson algorithm when only first-order and second-order derivatives are used.

By establishing of the mathematical model for B-transportation problems of relief materials, an improved algorithm to solve the B-transportation problems is proposed in this paper. In the improved algorithm, the minimum element method is used to get the initial solution. A proposed variable closed-loop method is used to adjust the solutions until the optimal solution is obtained. A calculation example is given to demonstrate the procedure of the proposed algorithm, and the results show that the algorithm is applicable and effective. Comparative analysis of the proposed algorithm and the two existed algorithms is made here. The analysis results prove that the two existed algorithms are more complicated than the proposed because the variable closed-loop method used in the proposed algorithm omits the steps of seeking test numbers in the calculation procedure.
