programming languages are taught to a broad variety of students. The needs of our mechatronic students differ from those of many other students in a number of important ways. In this paper, we describe the way an introductory programming course has been adapted to their specific needs and our experiences with this new approach. The main change is centering the presentation on specific examples rather than on programming constructs. At the end, we compare the new teaching method to recommendation from computer science, engineering and didactics. Our first experiences with this "example-based presentation style" are quite positive, and we believe this approach can be recommended to others teaching introductory programming courses to engineering students.

This Full Research Paper aims to identify and compare the skills involved in learning programming and the difficulties that students with cognitive disabilities may face, discussing the impacts generated by these skills for these students. Several studies talk about what skills a person needs to learn to program. However, we do not have enough to consider the needs of students with disabilities, especially cognitive impairments. Did we conduct a study to answer the following research questions: RQ1 - What skills are involved in programming teaching? RQ2 -Can cognitive impairments affect the skills needed to program? We lift the part the skills involved in learning programming and the cognitive skills impediments in the literature. Finally, we made a critical analysis impact on that audience. By crossreferencing this information, we can highlight that the skills needed to program impact students with cognitive impairments such as math, logic, and problem-solving. This impact does not necessarily mean that these students cannot learn to program. We believe adapting materials, exercises and assessments can foster learning for this audience.

Pair programming promotes immediate, informal collaboration over coding activities. The driving developer writes the code and controls the keyboard and mouse;the navigating developer checks the code as it is written by the driver;the developers swap their roles frequently. In agile development, programmers often code in pairs, in order to detect errors faster, produce higher code quality and discover better solutions. There is substantial research providing evidence of enhanced self-confidence and programming and communication skills if pair programming is used in teaching. However, the use of pair programming in higher education is mostly in co-located settings at campus-based universities. Our overall objective is to investigate how the benefits of pair programming can be brought to students learning to program online at a distance. This paper presents two initial studies looking at remote pair programming (RPP) also called distributed pair programming, in a part-time distance education setting, where students typically follow an unscheduled self-study style, have little interaction with each other, and have little time for extra activities. We investigated: whether readily available generic communication tools, instead of purpose-built academic prototypes, were sufficient for RPP;whether student pairs 'jelled' (learned to function well together) quickly;whether the ways in which the partners interact, or existing programming experience, affected jelling;and whether students felt positive about, and saw benefits in RPP, despite the overhead on their limited study time. In the paper, after describing particular challenges encountered, we present and discuss our findings and make recommendations for future implementation. The findings support the use of remote pair programming in teaching, with the majority of students considering it to be beneficial.

programming is among the most feared subjects for undergraduate students, especially for business students. At the same time it is a truly useful skill not only for IT gurus, because it can help simplify a lot of tasks in very different occupational fields. There are many different ways of teaching programming, some of them being well suited to attracting students while others are not. Thus a good approach to teaching programming needs to be found to revise students mindset concerning programming. Business programming 1 and 2 are courses which are part of a study specialization at the Vienna University of Economics and Business aiming at tackling that very issue. For this purpose, the programming language Rexx is the main language taught. Rexx is a particularly easy to learn, user centric scripting language which facilitates the first steps of novice programmers in the field of programming. This paper introduces the design of the Business programming courses as well as the features of the programming language Rexx and its object oriented version ooRexx.

IDSOJ is an intrusion detection system in the environment of a self-correcting online judge for programming student practices. This system detects the entry point of the different attacks that the students can carry out on the judge, informing the user with generated explanations about the mentioned attacks, as well as indicating several ways to combat or avoid them in the future. These attacks oscillate between access to the solutions of the practices of their colleagues, the possibility of changing the verdict of the judge or the date of submission (to approve suspended or not presented practices) and identity theft of a user with teacher role, among others. This paper presents the characteristics of the IDSOJ and shows the results obtained with it.

Pre-knowledge significantly impacts the learning process when learning computer programming. The topic's pre-knowledge includes the ability to think algorithmically and a basic comprehension of computer programming. In our research, we have analysed the pre-knowledge of students regarding computer programming over a longer period of a few study years. For this purpose, students took a pre-course to test their JavaScript skills and evaluated their understanding of computer programming. We present this analysis to check for similarities and differences that occur.

About Gamifying an Emotional Learning Companion to Teach programming to Primary Education Students

Background Gamification is a promising field of research that can benefit education. In particular, it can benefit teaching programming to children. Emotional Learning Companions (ELCs) are interactive systems that dialogue with the students as well as provide them with emotional support. Intervention The design of ELCs was extended with gamification to teach programming to Primary Education children. Riddles, levels, badges, and a leader board with trophies among other traditional gamification elements were incorporated into the learning companion, as well as game mechanics, aesthetics and connection with the players (students) to increase their learning, motivation and satisfaction levels. Methods A pre-post test single group experimental research design was followed to test the proposal. In total, 137 students aged between 10 and 12 years used the gamified learning companion during an academic year in Ecuador. Results The results showed a significant increase in students' learning scores as well as satisfaction and motivation levels above 90%. Conclusion Therefore, the conclusion is that gamifying ELCs to teach programming in Primary Education can improve students' learning scores, satisfaction, and motivation levels.

One of the most challenging tasks in computer science and similar courses consists of both teaching and learning computer programming. Usually this requires a great deal of work, dedication, and motivation from both teachers and students. Accordingly, ever since the first programming languages emerged, the problems inherent to programming teaching and learning have been studied and investigated. The theme is very serious, not only for the important concepts underlying computer science courses but also for reducing the lack of motivation, failure, and abandonment that result from students frustration. Therefore, early identification of potential problems and immediate response is a fundamental aspect to avoid student's failure and reduce dropout rates. In this paper, we propose a machine-learning (neural network) predictive model of student failure based on the student profile, which is built throughout programming classes by continuously monitoring and evaluating student activities. The resulting model allows teachers to early identify students that are more likely to fail, allowing them to devote more time to those students and try novel strategies to improve their programming skills.

Learning to program is difficult and requires a lot of work, dedication, and training. The difficulties of teaching and learning programming are a cause for concern for everyone where this subject is needed. It is a universal problem. The theme of teaching and learning programming difficulties is a serious problem not only for the important concepts underlying and structuring the course, but also for the lack of motivation, the failure, and abandonment that such frustration may imply for the student. It is important to act quickly. The follow-up of each student must be immediate and personalized. It is not possible to follow a traditional system of exposing the syntax and semantics of a language, with demonstrative examples of the concept, something more is needed. It is important to make an individual and constant evaluation of all the concepts that are part of the programming course. With this constant and personalized evaluation, it is possible to build a profile of each student's competences - building skills in introductory programming. Giving each student the opportunity to improve particular skills. This concept is very similar to the skills of a character in a computer game, which can be acquired through training, performing tasks or practicing a certain ability. The paper goal is to describe a system that allows us to suggest exercises and to evaluate the results automatically. That will allow to construct the profile of the student in programming, according to the different phases of learning. This set of skills allow the teacher to have complete and updated information of the students' knowledge at all times, and thus minimizes the students' demotivation and failure.

When learning computer programming, pre-knowledge is an essential factor influencing the learning process. This pre-knowledge includes both the knowledge of a specific programming language and the ability to think algorithmically. Both skills are needed to understand the concept of computer programming. The pre-knowledge of students and the post-course knowledge was investigated to see whether students' knowledge improved during the course. A questionnaire was used to compare the pre-course knowledge of students with the post-course knowledge. In addition, we examined the results of two groups of students: one with no prior understanding of computer programming and the other with some.
