Computing is a relatively new area in high school education, not only in Slovenia but worldwide. Therefore, there is lack of qualified Computing teachers. However, even the existing ones often feel isolated and consequently insecure. The latter often stems from lack of trust in their own teaching practices. These feeling can be alleviated through participation in a Community of practice (CoP). The article describes activities taken in a project NAPOJ to form an active community of practice for Slovene Computing teachers. NAPOJ started as a grassroots movement in a group of high school teachers and few higher education teachers involved in various activities (in-service teacher training, programming competitions,...). The main goal of the project NAPOJ is to involve teachers in an active building of their competencies and improve cooperation among them, such as exchange of study materials, and good practices. We started building the community by gathering the necessary materials and tools for teaching programming, an area where the idea of necessary cooperation occurred. Three systems that teachers use in teaching were connected: e-textbook, web classroom and a system for automated testing of program correctness. In the second year, we added physical computing as a motivational element. In the ongoing third year, the main emphasis is on supporting the programming competition preparations and on the exchange of good practice examples among teachers. The core activity is the formation of the community portal and regular monthly video conferences where certain, mostly didactic, topics in Computing are discussed.

Using the Karplus learning cycle to teach learners with ADHD introductory computer programming

Many learners find the study of introductory computer programming difficult. This is also true of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and, in order to support them, we need an improved understanding of how they learn programming. This study explored strategies for constructive learning of introductory programming by children with ADHD. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Karplus learning cycle—a constructivist teaching tool—to teach introductory programming to these learners. Working from an interpretive perspective, data was gathered through action research techniques and analysed using grounded theory methods. Four major constructivist teaching categories emerged, all of which support the use of the Karplus cycle. We concluded that—with some augmentation—the Karplus cycle can be used to assist learners with ADHD to learn introductory programming. We recommend that, to ensure effective learning, the middle phase of the three-phase cycle should be expanded into two sub-phases, and suggest two alternative ways to do this.

teaching how to program in Primary Education has attracted a great deal of attention in the last years. However, it is still unclear the approach to achieve higher learning and satisfaction levels. In this paper, the proposal is focused on the use of an emotional learning companion called Alcody. To compare whether to insert emotional elements have an equal or more significant effect on students' satisfaction and learning than personalization and execution, 137 children between 10-12 years were randomly split into four groups for three months. The higher learning and satisfaction levels are registered for the students in the group with execution, personalization and emotion management.

Recommendation systems use computational techniques to select items in a personalized way to users, taking into account criteria such as history and interest. However, several authors point out that the process of recommendation in education requires models beyond the user's taste, in order to catalyze students' learning. In addition, feedback involves the student's experience. In this work we present a recommendation system of learning objects supported by a cognitive pedagogical model. The central idea of the system is to find an object that adequately challenges the student without bothering with similar problems or becoming discouraged when faced with problems beyond his or her ability. We integrate learning models into game models to integrate them into learning models. We used as a case study a virtual learning environment which has a repository with programming problems. The results indicate that, in general, when students choose more appropriate problems (ELOs similar to theirs), they get a greater number of correct answers in their submissions. When the student choose problems that do not seem to be challenging, in general, they make wrong submissions or give up learning on the platform.

The amazing growth of the videogame industry in the last few years has opened new opportunities for the use of games in education. Not only the technology has evolved to a point where almost photorealistic 3D virtual worlds can be seen at home with retail equipment, but also the language of the videogames has evolved to become sophisticated enough to express mental processes, social relations and to represent rich and diverse ways of interacting with the elements of the virtual worlds. In spite of the growing complexity of the videogame language, most of its applications to education are merely simulations built with game technology. This approach limits the application of game-based learning to those domains where real world activities can be easily simulated. The motivation for the work presented in this paper is to pursue more creative uses of videogames in education. When confronting with abstract domains, it is not always possible to find a correlation between each game mechanic and a real world counterpart of the taught subject. So we advocate for doing the game experience a more important part of the learning process instead of using the common simulation-centric approach. The solution that we propose is the use of metaphors where, given the domain to be taught, a virtual world is designed with elements, actions and processes that correspond, as much as possible, on a one to one basis to elements, actions and processes in the problem domain. As a proof of concept, we are working in a system called JV(2)M to teach the inner workings of the Java Virtual Machine. The user is given a piece of Java code which has to be executed by interacting with a metaphoric representation of the Java Virtual Machine. In this paper we present two possible metaphors, one is based on adventure games and the other on multiplayer first person shooters.

Investigating the Effect of Program Visualization on Introductory programming in a Distance Learning Environment

Program visualization (PV) is one of the approaches to assist novices in introductory programming courses. We investigated the effect of a newly developed PV tool to teach tracing to first-year programming students at a South-African university. The tool takes the form of an interactive computer-based tutorial that teaches students how to draw variable diagrams (VD). All students registered for the introductory C++ module, received the tutorial with their study material and could use it to help answer assignment questions. To determine the effect of using the tutorial, students did an assignment for which they could use the tutorial and completed a questionnaire. Through the questionnaire we acquired biographical data, found out how students used the tutorial and also how they experienced using it. We then correlated these data statistically with their assignment marks. We found that time spent using the tutorial, programming experience and certain biographical properties contributed to higher marks. Drawing their own VDs to understand and debug programs also contributed to better marks.

teaching of programming foundations has been subject of several investigations, because it is believed that the required activities can contribute to the development of students more able to solve problems and to adapt to any environment or situation. Some works have argued about the integration of Flipped Classroom and Problem-Based Learning in Computer Science courses to potentiate this kind of teaching, but fewer evidences that investigate the real application between these approaches were found. Thus, in order to enhance the Flipped Classroom in-class activities, this paper reports an experience to implement and apply Flipped Classroom and Problem-Based Learning approaches for a CS1 course. Additional concepts of programming contests, group formation and learning styles were also used. In general, the main findings suggest that the Flipped Classroom model, if well-planned and carefully designed, can benefit students. However, these initial benefits are more related to student's motivation and social behavior than those associated with grades and the effective learning. Results also indicate that PBL may be an adequate approach to enhance the face-to-face time in the inverted classroom.

Programmers use Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) to write and test software, and students use them while learning programming. We explore the approach of embedding a tutoring companion inside Eclipse, a popular IDE. The embedded tutoring companion aims to be comparable to having an actual teaching assistant present all the time with each student throughout a course. The embedded tutoring companion tracks student's actions while solving a problem (coding, compiling, running) and collects metadata including the time spent, the correctness of the work, and the amount of copied or auto-generated code in the work. Then it can determine the practical understanding of the topics and concepts associated with the presented problem, it can assist the student by providing immediate feedback, and it can help instructors by reporting real-time information about students' performance. Our companion, implemented as an Eclipse plug-in, was evaluated with undergraduate students enrolled in a Java programming course.

Three decades ago high school computing was highly consistent with academic and professional world. This consistency was destroyed when school curricula began to emphasize information and communication technology skills at the expense of computer science. Recently many countries began to think how to re-establish informatics education in schools and how to attract pupils to choose optional modules related to computer science. Although informatics is not taught as a discipline in many countries, pupils are invited to participate in different contests on informatics organized all over the world. When pupils get interested in programming contests, they are looking for training and gain some informatics education. Contests are exceptionally valuable for motivating and involving pupils in computer science. The current paper discusses the contests and olympiads in informatics arranged internationally and continuously. The main attention is paid to the model of International Olympiad in Informatics and International Contest on Informatics and Computer Fluency (named Bebras in Lithuanian, or Beaver in English).

Source code plagiarism is wide spread in beginners' programming courses. Especially, if programming is a minor subject, as for instance in engineering degrees. It is very tempting for students during a programming assignment to use a working copy of a fellow student rather than struggling with the time-consuming coding by themselves. But as learning programming requires a significant personal commitment, we confirm the results of other studies, that cheating leads to higher failure rates and lower scores in the examination. Automatic plagiarism detection systems are therefore measures against cheating. We analyzed the students' achievements and opinions during the last 5 years of operating an automated assessment system with plagiarism detection. The paper discusses in detail the benefits of such a system, e.g. the equal treatment of all students compared to manual plagiarism checks, and shows also the disadvantages, e.g. code obfuscation, that students perform in order to circumvent the system.
