Selection of waste thermoplastics for shape stabilized phase change materials using multicriteria techniques

A variety of polymer matrices, based on thermoplastic resins are used to produce shape stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) with a large range of chemical and mechanical properties. In order to reduce global environmental problems and conserve natural resources, instead of raw polymers, waste thermoplastics can be utilized as encapsulation material to produce SSPCM. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene (PP) are the most preferred polymers for use as encapsulation materials. However, utilization of waste forms of these thermoplastics is important as SSPCM depends on various parameters that cannot be easily compared manually. In this study, based on this idea, the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR), two different multi-criteria decision methods, are used to select the most appropriate waste polymers to be used as encapsulation material to produce SSPCM in terms of thermal, mechanical and waste properties. These properties are detailed in seven criteria;melting temperature, degradation temperature, thermal conductivity, specific heat, elasticity modulus, waste cost, and supply of waste. The weighting of these criteria is carried out by decision-makers and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). According to the TOPSIS and VIKOR results, LDPE was chosen as the best alternative (C-i(+): 0.5860 and Q(i): 0.0000 with the decision-makers' approach and C-i(+): 0.6336 and Q(i): 0.0000 with AHP method, respectively) for the average values of the decision matrix. Sensitivity analysis, performed with the lowest and highest values of the decision matrix, verified the ranking of LDPE as the most appropriate waste thermoplastic for SSPCM applications.

PurposeConstructing subway stations near existing buildings is a complex engineering challenge. To identify high-risk factors and guide safe construction, a risk factor identification and safety evaluation system is ***/methodology/approachCompared to intuitionistic fuzzy sets, Pythagorean fuzzy sets and similar approaches, spherical fuzzy sets provide a more nuanced representation of fuzzy information. They offer greater computational flexibility and precision in complex fuzzy decision-making scenarios. Building on this, the study constructs a full-cycle dynamic risk factor identification and safety evaluation system based on spherical fuzzy numbers, triangular fuzzy numbers and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method. The model uses expert coefficients to measure the weight of different expert judgments and the coefficient of variation to assess the consistency of expert judgments. By combining subjective expert judgments with objective on-site data, the evaluation system is built through three steps: system establishment, data processing and risk factor *** applicability of the model was validated through the construction of the Xueshan Road Station of the Jinan Metro. An evaluation system comprising four criteria and 14 risk factors was established, covering geological conditions, construction monitoring, buildings and technical and management variables. A comprehensive evaluation of six construction stages was conducted, and the identified high-risk factors were consistent with the on-site conditions. Sensitivity analysis further verified the accuracy and stability of the ***/valueThe model is applicable to various engineering challenges, providing a robust basis for early warning of construction risks.

Evaluating Renewable Energy Sites in the Green Hydrogen Supply Chain with Integrated Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis

Green hydrogen can be generated through electrolysis using electricity from renewable sources, such as wind and solar, to split water into hydrogen. This study evaluates the green hydrogen supply chain (GHSC) upstream process using the two-phase integrated multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework. In the first phase, the data envelopment analysis (DEA) technique is applied to measure the relative efficiency of provincial alternatives with multiple criteria. The input criteria include provincial area, population density, gross domestic product value, and land cost data. In contrast, the sustainability-based governmental criteria concerning people, prosperity, planet, peace, and partnership indices are used as output criteria. Then, the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is further applied to evaluate regional districts for Ubonratchathani province, one of the twelve relatively efficient provinces, to obtain the ranking list of potential renewable energy sites in the GHSC. Criteria related to geographic and climate data relevant to the efficiency of solar and wind are, thus, collected and analyzed. Our results show that the top three district areas are Kut Khaopun District, Pho Sai District, and Na Tan District, respectively. Finally, the obtained results are verified to evaluate the robustness of the assessment. Our results offer a strategic and practical analysis for policymakers involved in the energy site appraisal process.

Regional Development through Tourism in Balochistan under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

Pakistan is a developing country with the potential to rise as a thriving tourism economy. Projects such as China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) are deemed to possess a greater potential in the enhancement of a country's economy and tourism. CPEC route connects Baluchistan with the rest of the country, thus enabling a possibility of flourishing tourism industry in the province. For this purpose, finding a prime tourism location in Baluchistan is deemed necessary. This paper considers four locations as potential alternatives that are analyzed based on ten distinct criteria using the fuzzy TOPSIS technique. The results conclude that Gwadar will prove to be the best possible tourism destination that can generate higher income and attract international investors to capitalize on this area. The study recommends the formulation of necessary policies and arrangements for this location to ensure an effective tourism industry in Baluchistan region.

Performance Study of EDM Process Parameters Using TiC/ZrSiO₄ Particulate-Reinforced Copper Composite Electrode

Electrical discharge machines (EDM) are widely employed in machining components containing complex profiles of hard-to-cut and machining materials. However, the fabrication-of-tool time for the EDM process is excessively high in the traditional machining method, which significantly affects the machining rate. Therefore, in this paper, a powder metallurgy (PM) technique is employed to fabricate the tool electrode using copper (Cu), titanium carbide (TiC), and zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4) for different combinations. An L18 orthogonal array (OA) is planned using the following input parameters: three types of tools (Cu, Cu-90, Cu-80), peak current (PC) [A], pulse on time (PT) [mu s], and gap voltage (GV) [V]. The performance of EDM is evaluated through the material removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate (TWR), and surface roughness (SR). The process parameters are optimized using two different techniques: the technique for order of preference by similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS) and grey relational analysis (GRA). TOPSIS and GRA optimization techniques produce the same optimal parametric solution for less TWR, SR, and higher MRR with the combination of the Cu-90 tool, E8 APC, 15 mu s pulse PT, and 75 V GV. Based on the ANOVA table of TOPSIS, pulse on time plays a major role, contributing 46.8 % of the machining performance;peak current shows the most significant contribution of 39.3 % of the machining performance using GRA values. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) image analyses are carried out on the machined workpiece surface to understand the effect of tools on machining quality.

To survive in the long term, business needs to profit, controlling environmental impacts with social responsibility. Sustainability programs involve the integration of social and environmental issues in business models and organizational processes. The assessment of sustainability programs is a problem of multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA). This work presents applications of MCDA for the assessment of sustainability programs in the textile industry. Applied methods for MCDA are analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for the order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The reasons to apply AHP and TOPSIS include providing an assessment index, ranging from 0 to 1, and that the MCDA model is expected to have more criteria than alternatives. Therefore, an application of other methods, such as data envelopment analysis, could be prejudiced. Concepts from the triple bottom line, economic, social as well as environmental criteria were inserted in the proposed model. Sustainability programs of six leading companies from the Brazilian textile industry were evaluated. The main finding of the research is that AHP and TOPSIS resulted in similar evaluations for sustainability programs. Both methods resulted in the same rank of alternatives. However, with TOPSIS, companies' sustainability indices were more disperse, varying from 0.10 to 0.92 against a range from 0.23 to 0.69 with AHP.

The car is one of the basic needs in today’s world for transportation of the passengers, and selection of car is a very crucial task for the customer. The quality of the car varies with respect to the attributes. The customers are in search of a car which is best in attributes. The present work gives the selection procedure for selection of best car using multi-attribute decision-making method viz: technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution method based upon different attribute. There are five alternatives and five attributes considered like cost, mileage, safety rating, transmission and brake horsepower for the selection of car and the ranks are obtained. Background: Diabetes mellitus prevalence is increasing among adults and children around the world. Diabetes care is complex;examining the diet, type of medication, diabetes recognition, and willingness to use self-management tools are just a few of the challenges faced by diabetes clinicians who should make decisions about them. Making the appropriate decisions will reduce the cost of treatment, decrease the mortality rate of diabetes, and improve the life quality of patients with diabetes. Effective decision-making is within the realm of multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. Objective: The central objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of MCDM methods and then introduce a novel categorization framework for their use in this field. Methods: The literature search was focused on publications from 2003 to 2023. Finally, by applying the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) method, 63 articles were selected and examined. Results: The findings reveal that the use of MCDM methods in diabetes research can be categorized into 6 distinct groups: the selection of diabetes medications (19 publications), diabetes diagnosis (12 publications), meal recommendations (8 publications), diabetes management (14 publications), diabetes complication (7 publications), and estimation of diabetes prevalence (3 publications). Conclusions: Our review showed a significant portion of the MCDM literature on diabetes. The research highlights the benefits of using MCDM techniques, which are practical and effective for a variety of diabetes challenges.

Influence of Air Supply Height on Sleep Comfort Through Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation

Taking the bed in the bedroom as an air-conditioning system (ACS), this paper attempts to disclose the influence of air supply height (ASH) on sleep comfort. Specifically, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was established to simulate the air temperature distribution, air speed, and carbon dioxide content (CDC) indoor at five ASHs of the ACS. The simulation results were compared with lab data. On this basis, the aeration efficiency (AE), temperature regulation risk (TRR), and energy-use factor (EUF) of the ACS were analyzed under different working conditions, and the overall efficacy of the ACS was assessed comprehensively by the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS).

Intuitionistic fuzzy-based entropy weight method-TOPSIS for multi-attribute group decision-making in drilling fluid waste treatment technology selection

Drilling fluid waste is produced by oil and gas industry operations and can potentially cause serious environmental pollution and energy consumption if not properly treated. Currently, there are several treatment methods available for drilling fluid waste such as bioremediation, thermal treatment, solidification/stabilization treatment, electrochemical remediation, physiochemical treatment, and supercritical fluid treatment. However, selecting an adequate method to treat drilling fluid waste is a critical consideration. The objective of this work is to analyze the problem of drilling fluid waste pollution and treatment methods, establish a drilling fluid waste treatment decision index system that takes into account various factors, and apply the intuitionistic fuzzy-based entropy weight method (EWM)-technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method to make a multi-attribute group decision on drilling fluid waste treatment methods. The method is then applied to the WBQ004-1-H1 drilling project as an example for comprehensive analysis. The final decision results show that A3 (0.566) > A1 (0.537) > A6 (0.526) > A5 (0.485) > A4 (0.478) > A2 (0.447), so the solidification/stabilization treatment is the most suitable method for this project, providing new insights into selecting drilling fluid waste treatment methods in actual projects.
