M-DAFTO: Multi-Stage Deferred Acceptance Based Fair Task Offloading in IoT-Fog Systems

Resource-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices depend on remote Cloud/Fog Nodes (FNs) to execute deadline-sensitive services. Offloading computations of real-time services to a remote cloud server results in intolerable latency due to intermittent channels, higher transmission delays, and scarce spectrum resources. Therefore, offloading to nearby FNs is preferable;however, it introduces several significant issues: (i) allocation of limited FN resources, (ii) deadline constraint of heterogeneous services, and (iii) requirement of computationally inexpensive and scalable strategies. This article proposes a M-DAFTO model to tackle the abovementioned issues and generate a fair offloading plan in polynomial time. The offloading problem is modeled as a many-to-one matching game with maximum and minimum quotas at each FN. Because the deferred acceptance (DA) algorithm fails to operate with minimum quotas, we adopt a variant of the DA algorithm, a multistage deferred acceptance (MSDA) algorithm, to solve the offloading problem. The overall goal of M-DAFTO is to reduce the aggregate offloading delay with increased assignment of tasks to FNs. Extensive simulation and analysis confirm a 30.26% and a 93.53% reduction in offloading delay and outages (unassigned tasks) compared to the baselines.

Demand response-based operation of a hybrid renewable energy system with energy storage by multi-objective optimization and multi-criteria decision making

Hybridization of photovoltaic (PV) and pumped hydro storage (PHS) can be a promising renewable energy-based system. In such system, optimal operation with respect to reliability is a vital and challenging issue. This paper proposes a multi-objective framework for optimal operation of an on-grid PV-PHS hybrid energy system (HES). For this aim, as the first stage, a multi-objective model is defined in which operation cost (OC) and loss of power supply probability (LPSP) are considered as objective functions and power purchased from the grid and incentive value (used for demand response) are regarded as decision variables. Multi-objective crow search algorithm (MOCSA) is developed to find a well-distributed and widely spread Pareto front. At the second stage, a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method is proposed to evaluate and rank non-dominated solutions from the best to worst. To conduct MCDM, technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) integrated with analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method is utilized. On the case study, simulation results show that a high reliability system is suggested in which LPSP, OC and incentive values are 0, 35.2 $ and 0.068 $/kW, respectively.

Smart communities in Japan: Requirements and simulation for determining index values

Recently, smart communities are heeded to in Japan as a solution to community issues. To properly evaluate the underlying concept, it is necessary to analyze smart cities in terms of local energy and environmental aspects, as well as disaster resilience. This research aimed to summarize the requirements for Japanese smart communities, and provide this information to municipalities, city planners, and regional developers in warmer climates, or countries where few precedents exist. Nine cases were reviewed in Japan, and four in Europe and the US to organize smart community requirements into three areas: environment, social, and safety-security. Additionally, bottom-up simulations were used to quantitatively evaluate the effects of energy technology introduction, emergency Life Continuity Plans (LCPs), and changes in energy performance owing to household compositional differences. The results showed that a typical Japanese smart com-munity (containing Fuel cell, PV, and battery) has the capacity to become a positive energy district, generating 1916 GJ yr(-1), and maintain power throughout a one-week power outage if shared within the community (save for the highest temperature week in August). Conversely, Japanese smart communities lacked consideration of residential diversity and creative landscapes.

Efficiency of Competitiveness Evaluation of Medium-Lift Launch Vehicle (MLV) Using Integrated DEA-TOPSIS Model 1

Owing to increasing launch demand and lack of launch vehicle to space for commercial satellite customers, the commercial launch market for transporting satellites into orbit by medium-lift launch vehicle (MLV) is extremely popular and competitive. Understanding the efficiency and competitiveness of vehicles is particularly significant for both MLV providers and parties that are willing to utilize launch services. This paper presents a hybrid model that combines the data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, and technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) to evaluate and then rank the efficiency and competitiveness of 15 currently operational MLVs. DEA analysis shows that the comprehensive efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency of 10 MLVs are all 1, which means relatively DEA effective. The remaining 5 MLVs are relatively DEA ineffective, and the vehicle named Zenit 3 has the lowest relative efficiency. Through DEA, various criteria of ineffective MLVs are revised to ideal values, which achieves effectiveness and improve competitiveness. The following TOPSIS analysis shows that Falcon 9 Block 5 has the highest efficiency and competitiveness. This paper provides benchmark MLV with the highest efficiency, which can be studied extensively by the customers of commercial launch vehicles and peer MLV operators to compare different criteria affecting their efficiency and competitiveness.

Antecedents and optimal industrial customers on cloud services adoption

The rapid flourishing of the cloud service market necessitates investigating the underlying determinants of cloud services adoption and identifying optimal industrial customers for business-to-business (B2B) service encounters. Many studies have addressed technical and operational concerns related to cloud services. However, only a few studies have addressed the adoption of cloud computing from an organizational perspective, and none of them have considered the practical application of cloud computing in society. Therefore, in this paper, a research model is constructed to understand an industrial organization's acceptance of cloud services and apply the results in order to explore optimal industrial customers. A questionnaire-based survey was used to collect data from the population, 227 firms in the manufacturing and services industries in Taiwan. Causal relationships were tested through structural equation modeling and the ordering of optimal industrial customers was evaluated by using the technique for order of Preference by similarity to ideal solution method.

The assessment of the quality of service provided by organizations plays a key role in the continuous improvement of the quality management system. When it comes to the quality of public transportation, the theme becomes even more relevant since user satisfaction influences the perception of a better quality of life. One of the modes of public transport that stands out in Brazil is the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, characterized by fast passenger transportation since it uses exclusive runways and promotes faster locomotion and less pollution of gases. In the Northeast region of Brazil, the current system has operated since 2014 with two large corridors with a length of 25km and carrying more than 830 thousand people daily. Due to the importance of the fast passenger transport sector, it is necessary to evaluate the quality of the service provided. In this sense, the present work proposes an approach to evaluate the public transport services offered to users of the BRT system in the northeast of Brazil, through a structured questionnaire to measure customer perception and applying the Fuzzy Set and technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The motivation for choosing the Fuzzy Set is based on the data processing mode since fuzzy numbers simplify the expression of human judgment rather than its individual rationality, the translation of individual subjectivity, and data processing. The choice of TOPSIS for the possibility of ordering variables by means of comparison with the perfect alternative. The methodology of this article is considered a case study and 569 questionnaires were applied to BRT users. The result of the application of the approach showed that the best-evaluated variables are technical security and a single charge of the collection. Fault diagnosis based on TOPSIS method with Manhattan distance

Fault diagnosis is important for the maintenance of machinery equipment. Due to the randomness and fuzziness of fault, the relationship between fault types and their characteristics are complicated. Therefore, the determination of fault type is a challenging part of machinery fault diagnosis with the traditional method. To tackle this problem, a fault diagnosis approach based on the technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution with Manhattan distance is presented in this article. First, the similarity measure between the fault model and the detection sample is constructed based on the Manhattan distance. Then, the similarity is transformed into intuitionistic fuzzy set and the generated intuitionistic fuzzy set is fused by the intuitionistic fuzzy weighted averaging operator. On this basis, the technique for order performance by similarity to the ideal solution approach is utilized to obtain the final rank to ascertain the fault type. The proposed method can handle an intricate relationship between multiple fault types and their various fault characteristics and better express uncertain information. Finally, a fault diagnosis example of the machine rotor and comparative study are conducted to illustrate the application and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The supplier selection process attracted a lot of attention in the business management literature. This process takes into consideration several quantitative and qualitative variables and is usually modeled as a multi-attribute decision making (MADM) problem. A recognized shortcoming in the literature of classical MADM methods is that they don't permit the identification of interdependencies among attributes. Therefore, the aim of this study is to propose a model for selecting suppliers of telecommunications equipment that includes the interaction between attributes. This interaction can model the hidden knowledge needed for efficient decision-making. To model interdependencies among attributes the authors use a recently proposed consistent fuzzy logic, i.e. interpolative Boolean algebra (IBA). For alternatives ranking they use the classical MADM method TOPSIS. The proposed model was evaluated on a real-life application. The conclusion is that decision makers were able to integrate their reasoning into the MADM model using interpolative Boolean algebra.

A Fuzzy TOPSIS Model to Rank Automotive Suppliers

This paper highlights the most significant criteria and sub-criteria in automotive industries for selecting the best supplier from the previous paper. Supplier selection process is one of the key activities of management in a supply chain environment. This paper presents another methodology to select the most suitable supplier in a supply chain system using Fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (FTOPSIS). Triangular Fuzzy set is applied into the proposed model to handle the vagueness. The interdependencies between criteria are considered. In our FTOPSIS model, the results show that FTOPSIS is remarkably successful in determining the best supplier with stability in the ranking as it relates to the different criteria weights and multiple sub-criteria. The proposed methodology presents a comprehensive multi-criteria approach to find the best ranking among the alternative suppliers. The result shows that supplier A is the best supplier with the Closeness Coefficient of 0.5407. The FTOPSIS model proposed can be apply on other vague multiple criteria decision making problem since it shows good result in the research. Future research may expand the work to another field of study or in a different type of industry. © 2015

GMADM-based attributes selection method in developing prediction model

Attribute Selection is an important issue for developing a prediction model, however, how to determine an effective attribute selection algorithm is an important but difficult issue. Attribute selection can effectively delete the irrelevant and redundant attributes to increase the prediction accuracy, and evaluating attribute selection methods usually need to consider several criteria such as accuracy, type I error, and type II error. In this paper, the selected attribute process is modeled as a group multiple attributes decision making (GMADM) problem. In evaluating different GMACD methods, the most results usually are consistently, But there are some situations where the evaluated outcomes have different results. The GMADM method is useful tool for evaluating attribute selection algorithms, and the TOPSIS is capable of identifying a compromised solution when different GMADM method result in conflicting rankings. Therefore, this paper proposes an objective (persuasive) GMADM-based attributes selection method to solve this disagreement and help decision makers pick the most suitable method. After verification, the proposed model is more persuasive to evaluate the attributes selection methods for developing prediction model.
